Do games like TitanFall and Destiny prove there is hope for the future of FPS?

I'm a bit of an old school shooter fan.  I like games that have their own identity.  Games that present you with a challenge that you have to master before you even can begin to consider yourself good.

You ask me my favorite shooter?  Socom 2...before the generic COD style gameplay and maps invaded the series (ironically before COD got big with Socom3.  Were they predicting the future at Zipper?).

My favorite Battlefield entry?  BF2...before it got consolized and started chasing COD.

My favorite KZ?  Killzone 2...before they noobed up the weapon physics and player motion to match COD and noobed the class system so overpowered Infiltrators and Marksmen could run wild.

You'll see MAG on my top 5 shooters of this current gen.  COD is a great series.  I play COD a lot, and COD4 is one of my favorite shooters of all time.  But when I want to play Killzone, I don't want to play COD in space.  When I want to play BF, I dont want COD with some vehicles.

I look at TitanFall and Destiny, and I start to think there's hope for the future of this genre.  We will see more of Destiny, but the abilites and motion I keep seeing from TitanFall looks like it will bring a whole new challenge to the genre.  Maybe I'm just desperate, but I think it will be harder to master than people think.

We haven't seen much of Destiny, but there is hope.  Is anyone else feeling somewhat the same?  What do you all think about the subject?

But what does Titanfall bring to the table? I've yet to see any actual reason for the game to have giant robots besides just having them, and they're just a giant person with a gun.

I'm thinking all the acrobatics of the pilot suits will change how you play drastically.  They seem much more capable than the suits of Crysis.  Combining that with the mechs, and you have something totally different to deal with than anything currently in the genre.

destiny looks like it could be borderlands without the suck, in an MMO-lite environment. i could get behind that, in fact, i'm hopeful for a PC version. titanfall's announcement made me think it was just a CoD clone, but i saw some new footage and not only does it look prettier than i remember, but the game looks very acrobatic and the robots actually sound more interesting than just a token MVP mechanic.

actually the robots control differently, and look more interesting than i expected.

not sure it appeals to anime fans thoughsts106mat

do you really have to question whether or not "giant robots fighting" appeals to anime fans or not?

All the trolling aside, I have to admit that the mech integration is pretty neat, you can even hang on to the damn thing, how cool is that?

I think they need to tweek the mech speed a little bit though, a bit more sluggish would be fine. I see no different between running normally and a mech running.

The mechs add to gameplay depth.

I feel the same way, FPS shooters will always be FPS shooters.  But I too need more to do in the battlefield, unlocking perks and flashy boats crashing ashore is cool and all, at least the first few times.

I love the Mech idea but I am more excited about the parkour aspect, it opens up new levels of gameplay that are sorely needed.

I have no faith in Titanfall. It would've gathered more interest (in my opinion) if it weren't using generic MMS weapons and cheesy messages from command HQ, or whatever. I'm waiting for Unreal 4, or an arena shooter on Source 2 - MMS need to die, and arena shooters need to make a return. If you want to pretend you're a soldier in Iraq, go play ARMA III and stop being a wuss.

Socom 2 was awesome, i loved that game so much. i prefer First person view for helping me feel immersed. Titanfall and destiny, are definitely looking like the new thing and the two most franchises i'd be looking into if i was excited for next gen. Halo, if i go with xbox will still have me more excited than either of those games though to be honest.sts106mat

Yeah, the first 2 SOCOM games where great. After that the series went completely downhill. Same thing with Syphon Filter. Sony should do a reboot of that game, as it was good on the PS1.

What's dumb about it? I'm bored to death of playing FPS games with an assault rifle and a shotgun. It was cool in 2005, but it grew stale - fast. How many popular multiplayer FPS games over the past generation have used any interesting weapons at all? TF2 springs to mind, but that aside, nope... Shotgun, AR, Sniper, Pistols, etc. What happened to flak cannons, lightning guns, BFGs, & shock rifles? I'm bored to tears of FPS nowadays. Titanfall is like "Hey guys, look at this robot! Go fight them with the same old weapons you've been using for a decade!" No thanks. I want crazy stuff.

Aye, I'll agree that was a bit childish. But I'm just bored to death with them. I know it's clearly not a popular opinion, as CoD & Battlefield bring in hundreds of millions on launch day alone, but hey... It's how I feel :( Sad times.

Shadow Warrior proves there's hope for the future of FPS games, but Titanfall does look good. I know it's fashionable to dismiss it on this forum, but it does in fact look very fun--a throwback to the older days where you had greater freedom of movement. I could care less about Destiny as it's made by the creators of Halo, a series which I've always found to be horrendously boring.

Havent really followed Destiny much, but since it is Bungie I will take a look into it and see what they have cooking. Titanfall looks amazing. The parkour system witht he jetpacks is what has me most excited. It really looks to bring a degree of fluidity of movement that I havent really played before. The closest I can think is Halo is very fluid, but Titanfall really opens up the possiblities and will bring in the vertical aspect of the battleifeld in a big way. Sre other games you can go up a ladder or stairs and get the high ground; but this ease of access and how quick and fluid it is to be on a ceiling or in a second story window really gets me excited about the possiblities of postionment alone. That isn't even mentioning the Titans; which adds a depth of stradgy to the gameplay. Do I loadout with all anti-infantry, or compromise in case a Titan is dropped. Teamwork will be (maybe not required) but crucial in taking out the Titans, and loading everyone out to play how they want and the team to succed. I love the end of a match , th elosing team retreats to a drop ship while being hunted down!

I was very skeptical of Titanfall at first, but after seeing the gameplay vids I am very hyped; and I havent been this hyped about a game in a long while! Hoenstly I think it could be the next big thing, right there with Halo and Call of Duty!

These games could only do one of two things for the FPS world. They could fizzle out and never leave their mark or they could change how we view shooters and set a new standard. I am always for the genre to move forward. If Mechs, jet packs, mp campaigns are need to evolve the shooter, then so be it.

Team Fortress 2 and Tribes Ascend were really good FPS games. STALKER, Metro, the latest Deus Ex and Bioshock were OK too. Those last two felt a tiny bit consolised they were still very playable.
I'd be very surprised if Titanfall will end up better than Tribes Ascend, a free to play game.

Yeah Socom was the best.  Nothing like it since either.  I'm afraid if Sony gave it to a new development team, they would just pick up where Socom 4 left off instead of going back to the Socom 1 or 2 formulas:

1) Single mode maps tailor made for a specific game mode.

2) Heavy breathing motion in the scopes, so sniping was ultra difficult.  It was a definite skill to be good sniping on those early Socom games.

3) People would vote campers to keep the rounds moving.  You just got out there and did what you could.  Rounds didnt constantly last 5 minutes like in Socom 3 and 4.

They also shipped with over 20 maps which is about as many maps as Socom 3 and 4 shipped with combined.

I'm bored to death of them as well.  I was bored of BF3 within a couple of weeks.  The map design is getting more generic as well.  It takes no time whatsoever to learn these maps.

All this COD chasing is just widening the gap between COD and everyone else.  COD does that formula better than all of them.  yeah the maps are smaller, but they ship with almost twice as many maps as anyone else.  They are also quicker out with DLC.  Why go play a copy of the real thing when you can just play the real thing?  That's why I keep playing COD.

definitely not titanfall, to me it just looks like COD with me mechs. Which to me sounds like a lot of fun, but its gameplay is nothing new. Destiny looks like a real winner here, the whole concept of the game just sounds really interesting. Its like a big mixture of an RPG,FPS, and coop game, and and bringing it all together is a massive world they have created for the game. Titan Fall just want to be the next COD, and will probably do whatever it takes to get the COD audience on their side. So you can expect to hate the game more and more every year.

Destiny is a lock to take up a ton of my gaming time for several years. I may pick up Titanfall just to have a more fast-paced, change-of-pace style game as it appeals to me more than any CoD since United Offensive. So yes they both give me hope.

Destiny is pretty much "Fallout 3 + Borderlands + EPICNESS." The mere fact that there is skill progression and a loot system are automatic sellers to me.

If the future of FPS is no single player then I'm not interested.
