Having played Gears 2 on a 37" LCD TV I've come to the conclusion that games do not need to look any better than that, it may not be the epitome of graphical quality but it's up there with the best and you don't NEED more than that.

What you need now is stuff that is doing more than simply being another 3rd/1st person shooter. Stuff that provides interesting story lines, or something different in the game play department.

I also suspect that developers will want to focus more on the physics and AI side of things rather than try and push anything more out the graphics engines they are using.

Just my thoughts based on all those OMG KZ2 > WORLD threads.

I don't think they even need to look better than Resistance. Smooth, physical, and a solid performance. But it doesn't hurt.

Gears looks great on small tv's, when you see it close on anything bigger than a 40" it looks horrid, so yes, they do need to look better imo. Or just make them all on PC lol.

When people become satisfied with what's already out, competition for improvement becomes hindered as there is no longer a demand for improvement. That is why I'm hoping that Crysis does get surpassed.

I disagree. I think it looks mint on a 42" screen, and I could only sit 5 foot away from it due to my friend's small living room. Whatever the case, games are definitely coming to a point where graphical fidelity. Crysis is very pretty at high/very high, but honestly I couldn't give two hoots about letting my jaw drop.

Umm, because it's more comfortable to have a big tv and to sit the appropriate distance away. And I can read text in any of my games from 15+ feet away. Perhaps you need glasses.

Because gaming doesn't happen in isolation: there are objects in which you can compare the size of the image to, for example the coffee table in front of you or the size of the DVD player sitting right underneath it. When you have a big TV and sit far away, you can still notice the size of the screen and appreciate it.

Hey, nice dodge, guy. Try and imply that I'm the one that doesn't get it. I never really understood why people would play regular PC games on large tvs, most PC games feel like they were made for a standard 22-24" monitor.

You are right, and if i had a good 22-24" monitor i would use it. As it turns out i have a crap 17" 1280x1024 (square) monitor. My hdtv is a much better choice. The wife will not let me buy another monitor, or a 360, wait a minute, i wear the trousers in my house........BRB...

Its a bit of a mix. For instance I have my 32" LCD TV above my 22" Monitor - however as far as using my computer goes, I could not stand using it on the TV, even from a distance at Eye level. I usually sit a couple of meters back - couch / chair or bed for my TV, and right up close for my monitor. Honestly I rather my monitor, as I find it more engaging, however the TV is better for relaxation, and still very enjoyable to use - same with the family 46" Bravia XRB.

If you walk right up to an amazing painting and zoom in on one specific part of it all you'll get is a blurry patch of colour. When you deliberately go out of your way to zoom in on textures up close, you're creating the problem that they dont look good. When you simply play the game as intended, the textures are fine, much like when you view a painting from a reasonable distance to take it in.

Lulz @ the graphic wh0rez. Go get a PC if textures and graphics matter that much.

I'd rather take a game that performs well and isn't part of Lagfest 09 while also being the most broken multiplayer known to man.

Graphics are great and all but I'll take excellent controls, gameplay, story, presentation, voice acting, etc over it. Graphics is a low priority for me. They look great and it's an awesome bonus when you have excellent graphics but only if everything else is excellent too. I feel it should be the first thing sacrificed for the others. I think Gears 2 looks amazing and I don't care if it gets any better than that. Generally speaking, the majority of games being made in this generation are going to be somewhere around this quality. It's not like the game is unplayable if it doesn't have graphics as good as Crysis. That's for all you PC gamers out there...Remember playing Doom, Wolfenstein, and the old style AD&D games like Pool of Radiance or Curse of the Azure Bonds? If not, those are awesome games with awesome gameplay with terrible graphics compared to today's standards but I would still go back and play them to this day.

Why do people always do that? make out like PC gamers care only for graphics? My god, loo kat the first 10 pages of threads in system wars. Most graphics related threads are by console gamers claiming superiority. What are the most anticipated PC games at the moment? Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2, neither heavy on the graphics front.

Ahhh.... well actually, while I see the point you raise, you kind of miss something... Doom - for its day, had impressive visuals. As for the older D&D styled games; well yup you're correct - D&D has always been about number crunching and imagination - guess the games just visualise it.

Gears looks amazing. Anyone who tells you different is just a jelous fanboy.
There are better looking games. But Gears is still up there, way up there. Anyway, Does the average game need to look better than gears? No. I think people are forgeting what makes games great. The story and most importantly the game play. You can pop in an old game from 10 years ago and still have a blast with it. Graphics arent everything. And im sure that most people, even the howling fanboys know that.

Although the good graphics never hurt either..

Because I have seen just as many threads started that claim PC is greater than consoles with graphics being the primary reason why, usually stating Crysis or Witcher as proof. I generally see about one thread a day in SW regarding this. Granted, it probably isn't you but there are those that do it. Personally I think all platforms have their positives and negatives. :)

Gears does look amazing but gameplay is the most important. Recently I was playing some old titles from the Genesis days. Point is I don't expect graphics to be Gears quality or higher to be able to enjoy it although it'll never hurt. :)

I guess it all depends on what System you're using on what piece of hardware. I agree tho, I could never use my PC on a TV and sit 3 meters back. Not even with something as simple as internet. (I tried with the Ps3 browser). Can't stand it. lol.

As far as console gaming goes, it's more enjoyable when sitting back with medium to large sized TV's. In my experience anyway. And like FrozenLiquid pointed out, you'll still notice you're playing on a bigger screen. So I don't really get what Frozzik's point is.

:)Lance_Kalzas
Superior graphics will always be a pro. Why are the lemmings and Cows at each-others throats over whatever game has the better visuals, or the system capabilities? :?

Fact is even on the PC platform there are loads of successful game popular games that don't prioritise visuals..... Be it Civilisation, The Sims, Counter Strike, or World of Warcraft.

Hell look at StarCraft...... The national sport of South Korea, and no one is phased at all by its sprite based visuals, and it remains extremely popular....

Even a game like Crysis has exellent gameplay and game design, and its the best looking game to date...

Depends on how far away from the tv, and how big your tv is, in my case a 42" tv i sit about 4 meters from it, even 5, then you really can't tell big diffs between...let's say uncharted and gears2? And if they can look better why not?

Gears 2 looks good? Hell yes!

Bascially I think we've reached a grapical zenith where there's not much need to go much further graphically. As someone posted it's gonna be about numbers of AIs and realtime phsics models next.

They need to. Imo it was a colourless, too much glow, had terrible draw distance and the attention to detail was so last minute that lastminute.com said "hold on a minute!"

I'm pretty sure after you play a game like KZ2 you'll think, "Do games need to look better then KZ2?" Today great graphics are tommorows old tech.

[QUOTE="skrat_01"][QUOTE="killerfist"] I prefer to sit as far away as possible in my room. Like 3 meter (or 10 feet) for my 32" in my case. Any closer gives me a headache. As for your rant about "consolites bragging about big screens", dunno about that. I never did. I just have my preferences. I hate sitting up close. killerfist

My point is simple. The experience of playing a game on a 100" tv from far away is pretty much the same as playing on a 30" close up.Obviously this depends on just how far or close you are. My point was also that if you do have a large screen tv and do indeed sit close you do notice bad textures alot more on the consoles.Someone mentioned you still realise you are playing on a big tv as coffee tables etc give it a sense of scale, thats the most insane thing i have ever heard. What if i have a massive coffee table? or a tiny one for that matter.

Look its just simple law of sight or whatever, when you get further away from an object it looks smaller, then when you get close it looks bigger. So those who have massive TV's will see far worse graphics as there image is stretched out over a larger area, to stop this they move further away. So, i ask, why not just play on a smaller tv and sit closer.
