The New 1TB PS4 is Still Using Old Hardware

Sony recently revised the PS4 hardware, sneaking out a new model that was less power hungry, quieter and cooler - but it seems the new hardware hasn’t been used on PS4s that are now being sold with a 1TB hard drive.

Our pals at TechRadar have issued a stark warning not to buy the 1TB version of the console if you’re planning to buy a PS4 - and urging you to pick up the 500GB version instead.

The reason is because the 500GB version on shelves is the “CUH-1200” version of the hardware - which is 36% more power efficient when in rest mode and will use 25% less power when operating, whereas the 1TB version is the old model, “CUH-1100”, just with a bigger disk slapped inside.

The new version of the hardware also has a smaller motherboard and a redesigned Blu-Ray drive.

I can't find on Amazon US any official 1TB bundle. I know that Sony had no plans for releasing 1TB bundle in US.

Yes, I did, and that's not the actual MSRP, you can find deals if you look all over the place but the actual asking price is a different matter entirely. Amazon is a horrible retailer to gauge product pricing, they kind of exist outside of the retail market and do whatever they want similar to what Groupon does. Also USD is essentially the world standard for price grading, if you start going to all of these strange markets you get these regional and obscure price shifts that don't accurately reflect the product price.

I could get a PlayStation 4 for $280 new if I dug hard enough, that's not the point, the point is the MSRP. On top of that the CUH-1100 will no doubt have a shorter hardware lifespan not to mention cost you 25% more in electricity.

You aren't thinking about this logically. The "new" 1TB models are still using the first gen internals while the 500GB model is getting the new revisied hardware. He's not saying don't buy a PS4, he's saying don't buy the 1TB model until they start using revisied hardware.

I'm curious why anybody would buy a PS4 (or an Xbone for that matter) now when Black Friday is less than 3 months away.

LOL! WTF is this, dude. My AMD cards heated up to 220F ( 100C ) in laptop which is 2 years old. And guess what? Nothing wrong with that cuz components are builded to withstand that kind of heat. Btw. max temp. in OLD PS4 is around 130F which is 60C. And guess what : PS4 ( like Xbone also ) has heat sensor. PS4, if overheated more then they should, will shut down automatically to cool. But 130 F @ max. is success for electronic components. That's not heat. That's really low temperature for componets under heavy load. It's a success!

What will last longer, a CPU operating at an average temperature of 60 or the same processor operating at an average of 50? This isn't rocket science son, heat degrades electronic components, it doesn't matter if you're not hitting its thermal limitations or even close to it. Every electronic component has a hypothetical countdown timer when being used, adding more heat whether minute or not accelerates this countdown to the point where it no longer functions.

Higher temp = shorter operational lifespan

Wasn't there Wobble on the base if you place it a certain way and the rubber on the original analog sticks would get wrecked with frequent use?

both seemed rather minor to me, with the latter happening likely because people are actually playing on PS4's and ignoring Xbones, lel. Apparently it's been fixed in the revisions as well.

Nah it was just shitty build quality as usual for Sony's controllers. I don't think it's been completely fixed but they improved the sticks somewhat.

I think they toughened up the rubber now or something. That's what I heard anyway.

Yes the switch to mechanical buttons will end the disc eject issue that mine has. Will get the Battlefront console to replace mine in November. The fan is also not as loud.

I haven't had any problems with my launch PS4 and so far, nothing to say other then the battery life on DS4 is short as ****.

Just wanted to make sure this wasn't some kind of "Zephyr redesign will stop the problems" situation or anything.

They did, but I still hear some people's sticks are peeling, though not nearly as much as they were at launch. I love the Ds4's ergnomics but I wish they'd make it more solid and double the battery life. Instead they sell an $18 controller for $60 :P

I bought a PS4 with a 500gb hard drive from my friend for $200 and went to the store to buy a used PS4 with a 1tb hard drive. I then swapped the two hard drives and brought the PS4 back to gamestop. I got a refund on the claim that the last person swapped the 1tb with a 500gb before returning it.

Now I have a CUH-1200 model with a 1tb hardrive at the price of $200.

Seriously, **** Sony. It would be a great day for gaming if they would go under already.

Well that sucks. I mean, can the PS4 at least use external hard drives yet? Maybe I missed out on that news, but can it? I know the Xbox One can do it since I'm using a 5TB external hard drive already. I hate swapping out hard drives for consoles like the PS3 and PS4 since the old hard drive would just go to waste. I rather use external hard drives.
