Seeing that the current generation is oversaturated with games trying too hard to be Call of Duty and Halo, I have to wonder: do we need a current-generation Doom clone?

I don't think that the solution is to go back to what we had. It would be best if people started making games that stray away from the CoD formula. Right now I think the market is completely saturated with such shooters, no wonder the latest FPS haven't sold well.
People need to wait for Brink. This game looks like a breathe of fresh air in the FPS genre. Parkour and shooting, what more could you want :)Randoggy

Not bad for a 17 year old game that still has a active multiplayer community. No First Person Shooter has aged as gratefully as Doom, thanks to it's community.
that looks terrible, KZ3 looksalot better imoNo. Doom feels terribly outdated right now (which is understandable). Besides, there's enough variety in FPS's these days.IronBass
Not really. When you add a source port like Skulltag ,what the guy above me used for his screenies, the game can go high resolution, have no autoaim, have mouselook and even deathmatch. Skulltag Doom plays and 'feels' better than any shooter since Call of Duty 4.

I agree, and i was extremely surprised at how satisfying the gameplay feels, it's pure, unaltered entertainment, and the MP is extremely fast, punishing, and fun. I think i've replayed it using Skulltag at least 20 times since 2009.

It found it incredibly boring, but each one has his own taste.
I agree with some of the posters above me. So many FPSs have been released in the last couple of years that they could sufice for a life time. I'm tired of seeing new FPS adds practically every month and have friends try to convince me of buying them. FPS games should take a break,I feel like companiesarerecycling their games and slapping new graphics and maps. They are rushing their material because they can, and its profitable.
I used to playHaloReach and Cod; Mw2 with frequency, now I don't play them at all. I'm fed up with FPSs, can't wait to get my 3ds and hopefully a copy ofOcarina 3d :)

Even on Nightmare? I always replay Doom with different community made maps and modes on Nightmare, a couple of times a week, for my well needed adrenaline rush.
Why do people always complain about there not being enough variety in first person shooters? If all you play is Call of Duty, sure, but there's games like the Stalker trilogy, Arma, Painkiller, Serious Sam HD, BioShock 1 & 2, FEAR + expansions, Crysis + Warhead, Cryostasis, Shattered Horizon, etc, all of which provide experiences that aren't comparable to the CoD/MoH stuff everybody seems to play.
If anything, there's way more variation in the FPS than there used to be. Yeah, there are a lot of corridor crawlers, but the level design of first person shooters wasn't any less limited: almost all of them consisted of linear key fetch quests. Now you have military simulators, sandbox shooters, survival/horror shooters, shooters with RPG elements, etc. And even when none of those appeal to you, there's always first person adventure games with FPS elements such as Mirror's Edge and Zeno Clash that provide a fresh take on the first person perspective in video games.

I dont know. when I think of my favorite FPS game from that age, "star wars dark forces," part of me wants to see more games like that. but with current gen graphics, to me, some of the charm is lost. its the same problem I have with modern day RTS games.

do you even think before you type. these days all we have is generic corridor shooters doom refresh would be cool. but it wont happen. thsi being said nonsensical violence shotoer are returning duke, sam, singularity, are prime examples of their return... all we need is UT and quake and we got ourselves a seriosu aprty on our hands!
Ugh do you?
"all we have is generic corridor shooters"
"doom refresh would be cool"
What the hell do you think doom is? It is the epitome of a corridor shooter - with archaic level design and graphics, which comes with age.
I think nobody are willing to go back an play old fashion FPSSeeing that the current generation is oversaturated with games trying too hard to be Call of Duty and Halo, I have to wonder: do we need a current-generation Doom clone?

[QUOTE="Wasdie"]We can still play the classics though, because expecting a new high profile arena shooter these days is very unlikely. I lost my cd and key for Quake3 =(We need the return of the arena shooter.
