This is no topic to debate what a hardcore gamer is.
Let's just see it as a gamer who games A LOT.
Well, I for one, game a lot. But I find myself having trouble with games that people online seem to find too easy.
It took me 70+ hours with Zelda without sidequests and I have 108 stars with Galaxy which I find pretty hard at times.
So my question is, does a hardcore gamer need to be a good gamer?

No. It's just that if you game a lot, then you're getting a lot of practace...so it's kind of hard to be bad.

108 stars is not bad...SMG has some super tough stages.

A hardcore gamer is someone that's really involved in gaming I guess. Finishing Zelda in 70 hours doesn't mean you're not good, it normally shows that you played the game thoroughly and enjoyed every minute, I myself took around 60 hours to complete it.

You're a hardcore gamer.

No one can lable themselves as hardcore without sounding pretentious. I'm not hardcore, I'm just an obsessed gamer.

I am curious, what constitutes a life? Going to bars (the biggest waste of time ever conceived by man)? Going out on dates every week that are almost certainly going to end in headache and tagged with a bill that you don't really feel you should have to pay? Hanging out at the mall with friends (which is no different than gaming with friends)?

I define a Hardcore gamer as someone that is open to all genresof games. So, no, IMO a Hardcore gamer doesn't have to be "good" by any definition at any type of game.

Haha. Well, if you have friends who game just as much as you then it might be hard to consider something other then that. If it snows outside you'll go out to play in it for awhile right? If you do have a girlfriend or a wife who doesn't spend most of her time playing videogames you will make her feel like a princess right? How about 4th of July fireworks, and cookouts? I'll agree with you that sometimes going to a bar is weak especially bad ones; and it's not the place to meet women either(most of the time).

For myself I have no life. I work 10 hours a day with a potential 6 days a week with a government job. That one day I am off my body tells me to sleep(I'm 22). It takes a beautiful woman to get me out of the house on my day off(or family).

Because you enjoy them? Although i can see some reasoning behind your rather simple statement.

Hardcore IMO is proffessional players and the best of the best players IE the top 20 on the DC ladder or CC ladder, or the top 20 CS Teams etc, or the Top WOW Guilds on your server now people like that are IMO Hardcore to the extremme.#

If im hardcore just because i play games in my spare time often the the Hardcore label means jack all tobe honest try ^^ being as good at a game as these guys top 20 in any game ladder is usually not easy, oh and being the top guild on you server i mean the TOP GUILD that raids END GAME content and has commmited mature players ("Well you have tobe to get anywhere on that game anyhow")!

Thats how i see hardcore :)

My answer is NO

And I disagree with your definition. A hardcore gamer doesn't have to play alot. It's only someone who understands (or thinks he understands) the true beauties of gaming and considers games as his/her main and by far most important form of entertainment. Hardcores are those who remember, for example, the ''good old days'' of true masterpieces such as Starcraft, UT, MGS, FF7 and OOT and so on...

I think that hardcore gamers are just gamers that are more involved and informed.
