Noticed a few posters make the claim that the first XBox was a max of 480p, which isn't true since some games were 720p/1080i with the HD AV pack.ramey70
Yeah I know. I had componet cables for my regualr xbox way before even Halo 2 came out. Halo 2 was seriuoly almost unplayablefor meon a regular Tv after seeing it on my HD TV. It made that much of a difference.

Here's a database of all HD games. The Xbox has at least 100 games which support 720p and some that did 1080i at 16:9.

Here is a list it shows the games that were in 720p/1080i natively.

There is no 420p. You're thinking of 480p and it's not HD. It's ED. HD is 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
480p is HD but not true HD.
No, 480p is not HD in any way shape or form. It's considered ED (enhanced defintion).

this is correct[QUOTE="Solid_Link22"]I am not starting anything but couldn't Grand Turismo 4 run at 1080i on the PS2?BuryMeI think God Of War 2 ran in 1080i aswell.I can't find any proper info, but for me it only ran at 480P on PS2, never did try on my PS3 though. At least I don't think it runs at higher resolutions natively, but HERE is a comparison. I don't read/speak a word of Korean, but i can only imagine from the the pictures that it's a PS3 up-scaling the resolution, since it does say HDMI/DVI and we all know PS2 doesn't have those.

480p is NOT HD, and there is no "true" HD. HD id HD, things that aren't HD aren't HD. 480p is standard definition in progressive scan, in other words - it is the LOWEST, lowest tier of ED.
720p, 1080i, and 1080p are the ONLY HD formats on HDTV's, 480p is in no way whatsoever HD (in fact, it's just standard def that's progressive rather than interlaced, it is barely an improvement over standard def 480i.) Some PS2 games and many GC games did 480p as well.

Nope, wrong.
On screens under 60" inches (as in 99% of the HD TV's sold for the home market, people don't have room for TV's bigger than that, and very few people have front projection units) you hit a point of diminishing returns. Most consumers have reported extreme difficulty in differentiating between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
They would in not be able tovisibly resolve any resolution above 1080p. This isn't PC monitors we're talking about here (where resolutions go higher because you sit 12 inches away from the screen and can see the difference,) these are TV's viewed at distances typically of 8 to 10 feet.
Also, broadcasters will not want to support any resolution above 1080p (in fact, right now they DON'T even support 1080p.) it would take far, far too much bandwidth to do so, and it wouldn't make any financial sense seeing as people would not see the difference. For the bandwidth it would take for a signal above 1080p you could fit 3 or more 1080i signals.
They were only upscale from 480p. Thats the sad truth.GatoFeo
i am surprised more posters did not know this. but then again I am surprised some of them can tie their shoes... Velcro rocks!!!

What? Many games had NATIVE 720p or 1080i support.

I am on some one elses computer right now but after clicking on the link I got a virus warning thing so you might wanna get rid of that link.so what resalution is 480p then?is it more than 800x600 or is it justamore cleaner picture?mouzer1989
480p is 640 X 480, just like 480i.
The difference is 480i is interlaced, it displays half of it's data every 1/60th of a second, and then the next 1/60th it displays the second half of the detail ofaframe. This is interlacing.
480p displays the entire amount of information every 1/60th of a second, this is progressive.
There is visually very little difference between 480i and 480p (especially after becoming used to HD,) 480p is just "smoother," no flicker or anything.
