Do the long cutscenes in MGS4 kind of get to you?

First off, I love MGS. I am playing the first again because of the enjoyment it brings me. But I loved GTA4, and think it deserves a slight edge over MGS4 simply because I get to play more of it. MGS4 was an epic achievement in interactive entertainment, but sometimes I find myself short of time and wanting to say, Mr. Kojima make a movie OR a game, bro. Your thoughts.....

Not at all. And the game has tons of replay value after you're done the game. :D

Why do you find yourself in that situation? You can simply press Start and skip it.

Yes the story is way too convoluted and silly. The 15 minute long "nanomachine" explanations made me want to eat glass shards. borefest to the max

No doubt. I want to play solid then 4 again. I'm going to keep playing it, for me the cutscenes were a little too much in the second half.

Jeff Gerstmann said the same thing about Metal Gear Solid 1 in his review.

What do people make of this?

True. I enjoy the story telling in games, but some of the stuff in MGS4 just drags it out a little.

I think Kojima and Co. did a great job making the game feel as cinematic as they did; the cutscenes were very well done, and really nice looking (always a plus). On the other hand...The fact that Kojima thought it necessary to inundate us with 10-20 minutes of exposition on the "war economy" after every 30 minutes of gameplay made me want to torture myself to death every once in a while. I didn't exactly have an issue with the cutscenes, they just always seemed to either come at the wrong time (when I actually wanted to...play the game...), or they were about 10 minutes too long (when I just wanted to save and play again later). And no, skipping the cutscenes isn't really an option, because if you skip them, you're skipping half the game. It's nice that you have the ability, and I'm sure I'll skip them on my second play-through, but as long and sometimes boring as they are, I spent $60 on the game, so I'm gonna to get everything out of it that I can.

I sat through every second of each one on my first playthrough, but on subsequent playthroughs, the only ones I didn't skip were the really cool ones.

It wasn't a problem for me. On my first playthrough, I was completely immersed. During act 3, I thought to myself: "Damn, this is really, really long." But I wasn't lamenting it, just marveling at it, I guess you could say.

On successive playthroughs, I can just skip those I don't feel like watching.

Minor Spoilers

I found the cut scenes bareable up until the end of the game, the last cut scenes with the marriage and stuff made me want to skip badly, other then that i enjoyed the game, right im on my second play through on the second hardest difficulty

It's a MGS game. All MGS games have long cutscenes. Why the long cutscenes in MGS4 surprises anyone is beyond me.

yea, but its hard when both games had a diffrent goal, example say a pure racing sim got a 10, it must be doing something in its department that made it so good

The long cutscenes get to me because i really dont have the time to play games that i use to.I can only find time to play games for only maybe 4 hours a week and those cutscenes really go on and on and on and on.By the time i get to the next section of gameplay i have to save for the next day,or maybe the day after.Dont get me wrong the scenes are very well done, its just im not that very interested in the story. The lack of time to play games these days makes me really appreciate multiplayer a lot more because i can pop on and play a few matches and then get off.I just wish psn was more like xboxlive,it would make games like metal gear be soooo much better as far as multiplayer goes.

they were too long...just like the rest of the mgs games..

more efforet should have been for actual play time instead of 10+ mins of cutscenes..

I played MGS1, but skipped out on MGS2 and MGS3. I'm glad the long cutscenes were on MGS4 so that I could have a clue about what I missed. A few scenes were too long or too cheesy, but I'd still give the game a 10/10. Loved it.

lol i agree. since the inception of 3d graphics mgs has always been a gallery of soliloquies - may have mispelled that. anyway if you have ever played an mgs game and you went and bought or rented this game, you should have known what you were letting yourself in for.

I can guarantee you that once you played and finished the game and watched all the cutscenes in its entirety the first time around, it's hard to not skip them from then on.
