Graphics aren't everything, not by any means, but at the same time it isn't too much to expect a significant improvement or standard in graphical prowess in the year 2009.
I think the graphics of a game becomes hyped because that's all we get to see until the game is released. So it's not that graphics becomes too heavy of a trump card, it's that it's really the only thing we have to go by until we can play the game ourselves. ...it wins by default.

Yes we do and there's 3 reasons for it: 1. It's true that the better the visual aid for a game is the more we enjoy it (slightly). 2. Since games tend to repeat themselves with few games being anything new gameplay wise we are forced to focus on visuals instead as a substitute. 3. The principle that there is a standared or visual quality and when a developer brings something below par graphics and nothing new with gameplay then we at least demand good graphics.
IMO great graphics will always make a game better, obviously it's not the most important element of a game but it still make a noticeable difference. And with more time and better technology I expect better graphics.

Graphics are as important as any other part of a game. They are what you look at while playing a game... and bad graphics do nothing to help make a game immersive.
not me, but yes, most certainly, the moaning that goes on about graphics here is almost unbearable. The problem is, devs then spend so much time on the graphics the gameplay suffers. Graphics are supposed to be the medium gameplay operates in but nowadays gameplay is just something to demonstrate graphics. Of course, this isnt true for all games but what IS painfully true is due to our complete one-dimensional demand on 'realistic' games, we have limited the scope of creativity that we're going to get, graphics OR gameplay wise. No longer do you see many devs trying completely new takes of creative presentation, or pushing the boundaries with gameplay and redifining what we think of games, because that isnt needed. Make a game photo-realistic and it's probably gonna sell.
I don't really care about graphics, but tons of people here do. All they talk about is the screenshots and stuff, and they rarely talk about the gameplay and other elements which make games entertaining.

I dig a good looking game like anyone else. But latelyI've been playing Half Life for PS2. It still holds up imo. Graphically it's dated but that doesn't matter. It's such a great story that I want to experience it, regardless.
