This topic has been dragged through the dirt numerous times.

But for what its worth, I love achievements. There is nothing like the little dingling sound when you unlock one without knowing it. Its enough for me to buy multiplat games for my xbox.

It makes games better.

I mean, a game like GTA IV for example, have so many things for you to do. And having these achievements just gives other gamers to see how much time, effort, and commitment you put into the game. It's kinda like the GameSpot leveling system. It's like you don't pay attention to the people who make redonkalous claims knowing that that was their first post and they're level 1.

Uh anything extra is always a good thing. I think they're completely retarded and not done well (especially the overall gamerscore) but it's still a good thing overall. Just not a big deal imo and I don't care either way.

It's nice to be able to compare games with your friends and talk smack when you beat a game on a higher difficulty than them. For instance, I have more COD4 achievements than my friends because they are can't beat the game on veteran.

It certainly doesn't hurt. Most of them do suck, but some games like Mass Effect and Dead Rising make great use of them.

As a concept, they are fine and great. But i dont think anyone can say with 100% confidence that developers havent used Achievements as a form of aritficially extending the game's length with achievement metagames instead of genuinely providing a long lasting game and enhancing it with achievements.

I personally enjoy them. I didn't think much of them at first, but they've really grown on me. When they are used correctly they can really encourage trying things a new way or exploring off the beaten path.

Worse.

Why? They really trivialize and make the online components of most titles really miserable, with kids playing solely for achievements. I know someone in real life who claims that having a larger gamerscore means you are better at gaming, and that playing games for fun is meaningless while achievements give you something to work for.

Most people dont think that though, a lot of people just have fun getting them while playing through the game. But i don't think you should get a game just for achievements and not for the fun of playing the game.

Achievements rock for single player games since they add extra value. For example, for DMC4 acheivements make replaying the game worthwile.

While they are great at times like when you get an achievement for beating that almost impossible boss at the end of the game with nothing but a pea shooter, people have taken them way beyond that and just collect them. even to the point of buying easy games (E.A. sports titles) just to inflate a gamer score, or inviting a friend over to get those achievements and then brag that you beat COD 4 on the hardest setting.

There are the high scores of many loves games. Some people care not for high score, but others try to aim for the top. Anything wrong with that. Its neither good or bad, its there if you want it.

I don't play online much so I haven't experienced that, but it's an interesting point. I can't think of any other reason why achievements would be BAD, and even that is more the fault of the people you're playing with/against than it is the achievements system, right? Anyway, other than getting matched with supreme dorkuses who will cheat/quit/do something lame for the sake of getting achievements, I think they're brilliant. They're like games within games, and when developers make the most of them (Crackdown, Dead Rising, etc.) they're like a platform within a platform.

I think that they make it better

stedtfeld

The truth why achievements was made for xbox 360 is because microsofts strengths are build on the online aspects of its games and is a big reason why most people who own an xbox 360 own one because of xbox live and its user friendly online features which make it easy for people to jump on with friends and play a game, chat and etc. etc.

The achievement part in my opinion is mainly targeted at the xbox 360 owners who dont really care much for the single player mode and campaign so that they have something to work for when playing the single player campaign mode u a can unlock things and recieve achievement points for doing so. I really dont care about achievements but it does help out and work for gamers who are only about online gaming. Me personally think a game should be played with its single player campaign first before jumping onto its online features of the game, this way u understand the game more and get the full expirience of enjoying that certain game and achievements shouldnt have to make u want to do this, it should be done regularly for any games a person buys or u will be getting half of the expirience of the whole game if u are only looking to play the online part of that certain game. So does achievements help out or is a good thing for xbox 360 users? I think it does for most xbox 360 owners, anyone who says achievements is a bad thing has there opinion but definately wrong.

ALOT of games use Achievements in a dumb way such as reach this many kills online total or participate in a game mode this many times...I couldnt stand those kinds back when I had a 360. But games like crackdown, deadrising, saints row, and such made REALLY great use of them. They kinda turned me into an achievement whore though which is why I dislike them now; That being said, I am kinda worried about ps3 and trophies bringing me back into that stage again lol

Overall- Depending on how the devs make use of them, they can be a cool addition.

I agree, the system right now is broken. Easy games like FNR3 throw achievements at you like no tommorow whereas games like PGR3 make you work your back off

I don't think you should let some peoples stupidity get to you. That's only a select few people online anyways. Achievements are great. It doesnt have to do with gamerscore because mines lowish and I own guys with higher ones all the time. Achievements bring reward to the experience. You know how great it must feel for people to get the 10,000 kill achievement in Gears of War? Or beat Through the Fire and Flames on expert?

i find them to be good enough, i'd rather have them, then not at all and nobody can argue that because if you dont like them, then dont bother getting all of them.

It also makes the game last longer for people like me, for example: first time i played through Gears of war was with a friend and on the easiest level.

The second time i'm getting all the COG items and completing it on the medium level, when i'm done i might do it on the hardest :)

A gamerscore gives you bragging rights, you ain't got any if people see a 1000 pointed Avatar in your game history.

You know I will agree with you on that 100% I reallly believe that they bring more out of the game to be honest. You do a lot more in a game that has them then you would with a game that does not.

Achievements can be a huge help for a game, Such as Crackdown and Dead Rising. But there are games like Avatar, that make getting 1000 points so easy you can probably do it bindfolded.

Well, thing is, if the Sony plan works, you'll actually get something for your achievements.............. like exclusive items for Home that relate to the achievement. Can't wait to see what R* will give you for the "shacking up with a h****r" trophy :P
