Poll Do you believe that Switch is supply constrained due to high demand? (77 votes)
There seems to be some debate so I want to know where everyone stands.

smh
It's widely available in northern europe! pretty much the first nintendo console since snes
Yeah, it seems to be available aplenty in Northern and Eastern Europe, and Australia and New Zealand. It is completely sold out in western Europe, North America, and Japan.
Nintendo should just reallocate stock, but I guess the markets where there are no stock problems aren't that big relative to markets where there are.

We call it climate change, thank you.
Also, I thought it was widely reported Apple was responsible for the supply constraints?
So you're saying you don't believe in it?
j/k
And yes, there is a global NAND chip shortage, mostly thanks to Apple monopolizing it.

yeh swe/nor/fin/dk have 26mil combined pop so relatively small market, we are also getting suckered by the distributor, paid 379€ for my switch, that's only 40€ less than ps4 pro
Its most likely not artificial at this point but it hard to judge what the demand actually is because the shipments are quite small.

and they have been getting smaller in Japan...

I still dont get why nintendo was so conservative with their contracts. They have nothing to fall back onto so why would they be so afraid to make higher order numbers from the get go. Did they really thing that if the switch bombed they could quickly change gears and release something else?
Now they are paying for it.

Hard to say when you don't know which components are holding it back or is that they have the components but the assembly lines are slacking

They were afraid of a Wii U repeat, and of betting the entire company's future on one product. Presumably they planned to push the 3DS even harder if the Switch failed while they worked on a normal Wii U 'successor system' and fast tracked it to the market (I believe that one might have been under development, held on standby while Nintendo waited to see how Switch performed).
We are seeing residual effects of the 3DS strategy with how the 3DS is continuing to get games even into next year.
This poll is missing my answer. Demand can be high and Nintendo can be creating shortages at the same time by not manufacturing at 100% of their capacity.
@tjandmia: Exactly. They did this same shit with Amiibo's, the NES Classic, etc.
Now they're doing it with the Switch and you can bet your ass they'll do it with the SNES Classic.
What an ass-backwards business practice. How many tens of millions of dollars have these dildos left on the table just so they can claim to have the "hot" product?
The "artificial shortage strategy" theory is fucking stupid. Like any company would purposely hold back supply in the hopes of generating artificial demand while willingly taking a loss just doesn't make sense. The people who think this just can't accept that a product by Nintendo can create that much demand on its own merit, and that's a personal bias and error on their part. It's a convenient way of hating on something they dislike because they can make the accusation without any sort of proof.
it creates more demand. just like they did with the wii the first year
I thought the shortage had something to do with the world wide shortage of NAND memory due to Apple and the other smartphone manufactures using so much of it.
The reason the Switch is supply constrained is due to high demand. Regardless of what the critics think of the system, it has features that appeals to customers and the marketing is an improvement over the Wii U's. These things plus others are what driving the Switch's high demand.
This is s a stupid question... No way any company, let alone Nintendo, would sell less of a predict than they can when they don't know how long the product will be so hot... I mean, sure it IS Nintendo, but it's not like every one of their consoles have sold like the Switch or Wii since the NES and SNES days.

Dont forget the DS too. One of the worlds most popular selling consoles in history of universe was thanks to Nintendo not making enough. They did same thing to Pokemon Sun and Moon. Thats why its one of the most popular selling games this gen.
Yes, high demand for it and difficulty getting parts for manufacturing are both factors and are the reason for the shortages.
Add in that it has a constant stream of games coming out in it's very first year and deman only increases. Mobile binding of isaac? Yes please. Mobile rocket league? yes please. Amazing Zelda? Arms (new IP)? Mario Kart 8? a new mario game, and notice of a new metroid game? hell yea! If I didn't already own one, i'd be looking around for one right now myself.

Lol, a lot of people don't believe those things... worryingly.
Anyway, shortages seem to be isolated because we haven't had any shortages here in Aus.

Conservatism has nothing to do with changing gears if the Switch failed. Business savvy individuals weren't making the same mistake which was made during the Wii U. Don't you recall how they were quite liberal with production and the two SKU's ended up with many being returned to Nintendo because of selling issues.
Nintendo will sell every Switch released from now until whenever. They aren't paying for anything in a negative connotation of the word. If anything, the company is paying for the gas used to fuel the ride to the bank with the money its making.
It's semi-artificial. Nintendo orders a set amount of consoles to be made and shipped. When those shipped are all sold and retailers demand more--they increase the supply little by little. If they wanted to, Nintendo could create a mass load of Switches, however, if it doesn't sell--they'd be losing money such as the WiiU and 3DS at launch. Its makes much more sense to have a set number within reason, then increase as the supply runs out to cut unneeded costs and all the while creating that buzz around their system of being out of stock inciting that must buy mentality for collectors and fans who are afraid it might be out of stock.
If they wanted to, Nintendo could create a mass load of Switches
This is not how production lines work
I belive suply constraints crated the high demand due to low priduction and rarity, not the other way around.
All I know is I have never seen one in any retail store. I am starting to question my faith that they exist.
On the bright side I bought BotW for my Wii U, and it is the best video game ever made.
Its been a while since I have been on here. Big hellos to any and all of my old buddies if ya'll are around!

Yes its an exaggeration. The point is that Nintendo could submit a bigger order to create more Switches but they don't.
@cdragon_88: They doubled production already for the year. We arent in Holiday season yet were Nintendo was expecting most to want one.

As a matter of fact, they did, but Apple is currently monopolizing NAND chip assembly lines worldwide.
Nintendo creating demand. They are known for that.
Lack of supply does not create demand.
Looks like Char is triggered lol
Anyways, it's a given and fraking common sense Nintendo is making these shortages cause of how bad the wii u did and they don't want to lose money like they did with the wii u which sold piss poorly. If you can't grab that simple concept then you're a lost cause.
