Sometimes. Depends on the game and how much the original is needed to understand the sequel.

MGS4 was my first MGS. I read all the story crap on forums and wiki and then I understood the story fine. I have played games before while missing the first part such as Resistance.

Yes, just bought Dawn of War 2, never played the first.

Others i can think of, BIA-HH, DMC4, NWN2 and i jumped into the Hitman Series on Blood Money, and went back and bought the other 3, sure theres more.

Next up is Call of Juarez Bound in Blood, never played the first, but the new one looks awesome!

Most of the time I don't. I don't know, I just have a thing where I can't really play a sequel unless I've played the first. It doesn't feel right I guess.

indirect sequels like fallout 3, oblivion, and ace combat 6 are fine. sequels like halo 3, saints row 2, and rsv2 can get confusing.

I played bought Killzone 2 and I never played the first one. Unfortunately, it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Aside from that, I don't believe I missed out on any prequels.

YYou really need to play the first two to get the full scope of the universe.

Not to mention you are depriving youreself of the best gameof all timein God of War II. :o

If the story is continuous, I won't. I did do that with Half-Life 2, but I was able to understand the story just fine anyway.

I bought Metal Gear Solid 2, hated it and returned it. THEN I played Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes and still hated it. And finally, this gen I bought Metal Gear Solid 4 and hated it, took it back and got my money back. Don't buy into the hype...

Only FPS...played K2, Farcry 2, Halo 3, R2, COD 3 and COD 4 without buying the first in the series. Really doesn't matter when it comes to FPS because they don't come with any compelling stories or any story at all.

Occasionally. I plan on getting Uncharted 2, don't plan on playing the first. I bought MGS2 before I played MGS1. H3 was the first Halo I owned. Didn't play first Killzone either

Sometimes. In most cases it really doesn't matter. One exception was MGS2, but I still enjoyed it. I've got Fallout 3 but can't play it unless I get my old computer fixed, or transfer the 8800 Ultra to my new computer, if that's possible.

Usually yes, but there are cases in which I don't. If the prequel is basically unrelated, or is extremely poor as a game.
