Well?
I don't consider Doom 2016 the best but it is my most enjoyable first-person-shooter on the PC I kept replaying the Campaign the most and I was so amaze ID totally optimize it on PC. That said, I'm now on the hype train for Doom Eternal more so.
I'm not all into Wolfenstein cause I really don't care about killing Nazis and yes, I'm from the U.S, just don't care about going gun blazing on Nazis.
I'm really going to need a refresher in the contenders before I say it's the best...
But if wolfenstein is the benchmark.... Doom 2016/2017 crushes it. Wolfenstein is more story and cutscene than fps. I just stopped playing after the umpteenth time it pulled me out of the action to run a stupid errand at the hideout.... only to throw you back in the game without your weapons. Everytime I start to get in rhythm it pulls you away.
Doom has some pacing issues, and sometimes i get caught up in searching for secrets a bit longer than I would like. But It's a pure shooter... and really let's you go to town.
I'm enjoying Dusk too.
I like exploring with multiple means of doing so. In fact, I spend more time wandering around the game world and enjoying the view than actual shooting. So, it's the Far Cry games 3, 4, and 5 for me.
Doom 2016 is okay. But, it doesn't have the vistas I enjoy gawking at or the various means of transportation. I'm also not a big fan of the closed boss arena. I rather have a boss NPC chase me across the level.
What I wish Doom 2016 had is a photo mode a la Far Cry 5 for beauty screenies....like the credits:
No it design more for controller. Pc design game has more vertical movements.
No it's not. Even Wolfenstein 3D and Doom/Doom II didn't have vertical mouse look when they originally released on the PC.
@jun_aka_pekto:
This game is just one plain. Modern shooter most is restrict to thing more suitable for controller. If pc was main platform it be less restrictive with today technology.
What restrictions are you talking about? Many shooters are slow because they opted to have a more realistic feel and not because of controllers.
Plus, many shooters that do okay with controllers on consoles also do quite well with mouse and keyboard on the PC.
The STALKER games are unique to the PC. Yet, it's nowhere as fast-paced as Doom 2016. If I tried to run and gun like in an arena FPS, my character would be dead in seconds. The only time I come close to run and gun is when I retreat and run away from the firestorm of bullets.
[edit] Even though when Doom first came out people were controlling it with arrow keys and no strafe.
Doom had mouse support if you had a mouse driver enabled. If you didn't have the mouse driver enabled, then the option won't show up.
I started playing Doom with a joystick and a mouse. I kinda liked it.
By 1993, Windows 3.1 was common on many PCs as was a mouse.
@jun_aka_pekto: Yeah. But control methods move on and improve over time and game design alongside with them.
You can't knock Doom 16 for being a console also game. That doesn't necessarily mark it down. It still could be just as good a game as a mouse only game. In fact. It's probably more of a fluke that Doom played so well with a mouse. The run speed is so ridiculous.
It would depend on how iD envisaged people playing it back then...
Quake didn't even have mouse look on default...
The tc doesn't define 'better' anyway.
Popular is best if profit is your goal. Success could also mean critical acclaim.
In which case just look on metacritic.
I don't like the aesthetic of Doom 16 and find the tone claustrophobic in a non-fun way.
Well maybe. I mean Doom is great fun. I liked the first Wolfenstein but the second one I lost interest half way through.
@zaryia:
No it make for console. Design for controller
Are you @GloriousNippon 's alt?
Yes Doom is. wolfenstein is trash. it focus more on cutscene and has awful gameplay. wolfenstein 2 is among the worst FPS i have ever played.
Doom on other hand is masterpiece. although its going to surpassed next year by Metro Exodus.
I do. It was everything Wolfenstein was trying to do without the crap stealth missions and pointless focus on the story that really went stupid in the 2nd.
The last shooter that made such an impact on me before Doom was Crysis and CoD4 MW, in 2007. So yeah I'll say it, best shooter of the past decade.

In what way? You've provided no examples of that. You've stated some pretty bold, and rather generalizing claims about Doom, none of which you backed with any evidence and fly in the face of the general public's opinion about the game.
So either put up, or shut up. You don't make a case by telling somebody they are wrong and making a general statement outlining your argument with no actual evidence to back it up.
Like, for instance, in what way is it designed solely for a console? The level design is reminiscent of the old Unreal and Quake single player games. The game fully supports hotkeys and control input that is traditional in PC shooters. The gameplay itself has some modern twists (the melee for ammo/health, vaulting, double jumping), but they were all implemented to remedy some of the issues of older PC arena shooters that made them inconsistent to play. For example adding a nice risk/reward factor with the melee, while the vaulting reduced the penalty for slightly missing your jump while still putting you at a disadvantage, and the double jumping just giving you more movement options that aren't even available in those old PC shooters.
Meanwhile the difficulty was a bit easier than the older shooters on the normal level, which is consistent with all games in this day and age as oldschool games were generally a bit too punishing, but there was a variety of harder difficulties designed to challenge veteran PC gamers.
You're literally the first person I've ever seen say Doom is built for the consoles as if that somehow negates all of the positive qualities from the PC perspective.
If you look at it from just the PC perspective the game runs on Vulkan and OpenGL rather than DX. The game is extremely well optimized while also supporting graphical settings that punish high end machines. The game supports ultrawide monitors and unlocked framerates to take advantage of 120-240hz monitors. Games that are built just for consoles don't do these things. It takes extra time and effort that is unnecessary in a low effort port of a console game.
So really you're kind of batting a zero right now in terms of actually convincing anybody of your opinion here. So please, enlighten us.
If your argument hinges on the notion that because it's on a console, it's somehow inferior, you can take that crap and shove it because that argument holds no weight at all and you can continue on with your miserable existence of not enjoying great games in order to make it look like you're some "hardcore" gamer on the internet.
Protip: nobody gives a crap about you or what persona you've built on the internet.
The new Wolfensteins were mediocre. Doom was decent. Neither of them are that great to me, but I prefer more realism than arcade in my shooters. Escape from Tarkov, Squad, Hunt: Showdown, PUBG, Battlefield 5, etc. Escape from Tarkov and Squad are the only truly "realistic" ones, but you know what I mean; more realistic than those arcade shooters. Lol

except Doom is much better than Crysis and COD4. especially COD4 that was heavily scripted on rail 6 hour campaign.
Crysis was excellent but despite being PC exclusive it play lot like console shooter with health regen and ADS.
Doom is better than any of last gen shooter that is not named STALKER.
The New Order, The Old Blood and The New Colossus completely wreck DOOM in the most important aspect:
The Shooting, the franchise Machinegames has built up just nails the shooting: It's loud, punchy, powerful and deadly.
The shooting in DOOM was good, but I couldn't escape the feeling that it just set you in a lot of the same looking arena's over and over, doing the same thing over and over.
Wolfenstein has better weapons, better enemy design, and I just overall prefer the setting.
Yes, despite some things I didn't like with it.
Not a fan of the arena battles. Older DOOM games wasn't like that. And I think they could've done Hell way more interesting. I also think the game is a bit slow. Perhaps a bit faster than FPS games usually are today, but DOOM 2016 is like DOOM II in syrup. Also not a huge fan of the monster designs. I much prefer the monster designs in DOOM 3.
I also think the game is a bit slow.
I have been telling people that increase the FOV and it become fast. i was playing it with default FOV at my first playthrough. during mid of i increase it and it become fast.
Nah Wolfenstein doesn't touch it. That DOOM soundtrack bangs death, and that's worth the price of admission alone. Get gory, or go home. Nothing gets gory like DOOM.

Hm. I'll try it out and see what happens.
I dont think so personally. One of the best maybe as far as movement and feel of a FPS go nowadays, I didnt recon much at all the overall game. But then as I sit here writing this im struggling to think of a FPS thats better, which doesnt say much for the genre tbh. Then again I dont play many nowadays as im so put off by recent ones, like Doom.
I found it kind of monotonous, especially the second time. I'm not excited for the sequel. But I can't even think of better shooters I played in the last five years. The genre isn't doing well.

That soundtrack is weak. It's bad metal. Mostly tuneless and filled with ugly dubstep noises. I sometimes played classic metal albums when I was going through my playthrough, because I was sick of listening to the game's crap.

what about the great Metro series?
its probably the best new franchise that debut in this decade. Metro exodus im expecting it to be one of the best game ever.

It felt a little bit faster, maybe. But the stretched out edges are pretty annoying.

it took longer to get used to it. i cant play with default FOV now. as it feel too slow in comparision.
Doom 2016 has to be mentioned the gameplay was almost Perfect for a FPS. The atmosphere kept me interested I got to the final boss before my game glitched. Thinking about replaying it at some point and finally beating it.
@ezekiel43: Dude that's not metal. It's blood lust. Hence banging death. Lust is sin, and sin is the wage of death. And digital is a kind of death.
I would pick Titanfall 2 over Doom. Doom is excellent but at times feels a bit repetitive. But it's not saying much really, the genre has been dormant for a while, hopefully Metro and Cyberpunk will push things forward.

What FOV do you use? I put it at 110. Anything more made the game look seriously weird.
