Or is it Gears, Uncharted or any other TPS games?
For me Max Payne series is best ( Epic soundtrack, Ultimate tragic hero storytelling , fast bullet time showdowns , memorable antagonists and above all practical dialougues )

Well?
Absolutely.
Original Max Payne along with Mafia 1 are not only two of best TPS games but best third person games in general.
Max payne 2 was disappointment but it was good.
Max Payne 3 was once again mastepiece and last good TPS game.
Yes. Im trying to think of one better, but I cant.
Because this game killed third person shooter genre. introducing regen health cover system and thus TPS genre didnot recover since then. when COD ruined FPS, we still gotten good and bad FPS but in this case. Gears just killed the genre.

Max Payne is such a memorable character.
And a good man. He couldve ran away from the events of 3 , but he decided to go against the power for whats right. No revenge agenda this time as well.
3 is one of the best games I've played period. How there isn't a remaster after some of the trash that's been done is crazy.

I liked Gears 1 enough that I would have bought Gears 2, mainly I liked it for the online COOP gameplay when there weren't that many decent online COOP games around. Gears 2 never did come to PC though, or 3. Now MS want me to buy Gears 4 onward... /shrug
Max Payne is in a league of its own for TPS IMO.

I played Gears 1 for liek half and hour then delete it. you have to hold space bar to run and cover, you cant shoot while running. then your health regenerated when in cover. terrible game.

r6lv came out a few days later than gears and had regen health and cover system. gears may have sold more copies but those things were not new things introduced by gears.
also max payne 3 might be a very competent shooter on the whole, but if you're quick to dismiss other games as "movie games," remember your favourite tps ever max payne 3 gives anything naughty dog and co have ever made a run for their money when it comes to sheer volume of cut scenes and cinematics. and there's a section mid game where iirc it repeatedly wrestles control from you for about 10-15 mins - i think its the branco office level as a bomb detonates - nigh on sacrilege for an action game

Yeah I loved the story in Max Payne 3 and Rockstar made some gameplayimprovements as well.
Only thing I, and most people, hated were the horrible filter effects.
Remedy made comic panels for the first game because they didn't have the budget to do cutscenes. But what they pulled off is still way better than having horrible filter effects over their cutscenes like Max Payne 3.

MP 3 also had tons of unlockables as in replaybility. Love it :)

@magnum3000: It also added the multiplayer mode, which was quite fun.
Doing the dodge move all the time, hehe
It was just ruined for me because some people got some really overpowered weapons in the level up system.
Loved its mp back then. Installing MP 3 all over again :)
Max Payne is such a memorable character.
Gears has satisfying gameplay, but I wouldn't call it anywhere near the best TPS combat.
I played Uncharted for the exploration and puzzles. It has an interesting story for sure, but the combat itself just stinks.
i think the combat is fun as hell in uncharted. i love playing aggressive and doing blind fire tricks ect. if i die i do it again until i get it right. its like an action film to me that i can play. i don't sit in one spot to cover. i like going right into the fight.
max payne was cool but all it was was dive slow shoot. dive this way next shoot repeat. at least uncharted you can pull them down, run up and knock them out, or blind fire, jump off something take them out, stealth kill. so many different ways you can take out the enemy.

Yeah, I've been meaning too as well.
There really aren't many shooters out there like Max Payne and I'd wanna replay Max Payne 1&2, but these games don't scale that well to modern PCs and resolutions.
@magnum3000: I really need,to go back and replay MP3, really loved that game.
I'm installing it now :)

You can replay it again you know, this thread made me reinstall it lol
Max Payne 1 and 2 are both incredible games. But I never liked Max Payne 3.
Forced myself to finish it
it has perfect gameplay mechanics of any third person game.
@magnum3000: Whenever casual4ever agrees with you, that's when you know you've fucked up, and besides Alan Wake is a better TPS than all MP games combined.
No, not for me. I thought they were ok but I would put Gears of War, Resident Evil, Vanquish, and probably a number of others ahead of Max Payne myself.
Max Payne series is the best IMO.
As a trilogy? Yea, pretty solid as far as video games go. 2 and 3 have their issues, but gamers being gamers love to hyperbole.
For their time maybe. Max Payne 3 being the latest entry definitely still holds up well even against shooters of today.
Vanquish, Mic drop.
This. Vanquish is the greatest TPS of all time.
Not sure i'd agree, Max Payne is a simple game, but simple isn't an auto-bad. In Max Payne case i'd argue it's a plus.
It's kind of a lack of variation that it lets it down, and when stuff like Max Payne 3 adds stuff like sniper sections and on-the-rail stuff it feels totally out of place.
Same with shit like wall-cover.

As a third person shooter trilogy yes. But I actually prefer 2 over the first game although the first game has better atmosphere and dialogue and my biggest issue with 3 is that you can't use nades and molotov cocktails like the previous games.

They both have great shooting mechanics, with MP3 possibly having the edge there. But Vanquish has a better overall game design. It offers a wider variety of mechanics, better pacing, and more varied battles and set pieces expertly designed around the mechanics. It combined game design elements from DMC and RE4, along with what works from Gears, and the result is Vanquish, the GOAT TPS (IMO).
Max Payne 1 n 2 are pretty good, 3 isn't.
But Vanquish is a better game. Resident Evil 4's combat, and by extension Resi 5's mercs and Resi 6's mercs have deeper combat options. All those games also have much much much muuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better enemy variety.
Multiplayer space wise Gears of War has a reasonably high skill ceiling n solid game design around wall bouncing n wall cancelling, and to Nintendo's credit Splatoon's actual core combat loop on their maps is great, n their competitive modes are legit. How they handle the actual game around the gameplay is a downer tho.
Dead Space 2 also is apparently super good, but I never beat it. I got bored, and I didn't care that much for 1. But apparently I would really love it if I got into it is what I was told, so one day have to give it another run.
RenegadeFury here big shills the Transformers TPS games both for solo n multi, has me mildly interested because his gameplay taste is pretty good.
There is this game called GunZ that has the coolest fucking movement mechanics, but apparently game is ass. But I like the idea of me liking that game because the movement in that game is siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
While a great franchise that honor will always go to SOCOM for me unless that changes sometime in the future.

Max payne 3 is also masterpiece champ. wrong again.
vanquish is no way better than Max payne in any shape or form. Story in vanquish is non existance while Max payne offer some of the best story. ever the actual combat suck too with bullet sponges robots while its very satisfying to shoot people in max payne especially in Max payne 3.
fast gears of war with sliding didnot impressed me.
Back in the day of their release for sure, nowadays... Ugh, don't even bother. Even nostalgia can't save it, or better put, will be ruined, especially true for MP1+MP2...

The combat in Vanquish is so much more satisfying and entertaining than Max Payne. While both are about on-par in terms of the shooting mechanics, the combat in Vanquish is a lot more flexible, with more options in how you approach and fight enemies. In Vanquish, you can switch it up between shooting and melee combat, between cover and sliding, and between normal time and bullet time. Vanquish also makes better use of bullet time, especially when combined with the sliding. And the enemies in Vanquish are certainly not what I'd call bullet sponges, but they require you to make use of your skills and tactics to beat them.
Besides, you said you enjoyed Doom Eternal. If you enjoyed that, then there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy Vanquish. Both have a similarly fast-paced, arcade-action approach to shooter gameplay, except Vanquish does it in third-person and Doom Eternal does it in first-person. Your favourite FPS Doom Eternal is basically the closest thing to a first-person Vanquish. The Doom Eternal producer already acknowledged DMC and Bayonetta as influences on Doom Eternal, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were influenced by Vanquish too.
Max payne 3 is also masterpiece champ. wrong again.
brb you have a more limited weapon wheel
brb you you have increased landing recovery
brb max flat out moves slower in walk speed n run speed
brb the game completely invalidates the whole ending of Max Payne 2 a much better video game
brb they replaced Sam Lake's better writing with Rockstar's nihilistic bullshit
brb unskippable ass cutscenes
So in every measurable way its a huge downgrade as a game from the previous 2 Max Payne games, added bonus the story n writing is way worse. Game busy aping Man on Fire.
vanquish is no way better than Max payne in any shape or form. S
More enemies, bosses, more unique guns, enemies that can cover different spaces, melee n boosting with proper meter management. I'm sorry that you're so bad at a game that was built for analog sticks, that on a mouse you still can only play it as a cover shooter.
Fucking scrub.
