It was released in this gen, so it's a current gen console. And it's a vast improvement over the GC. Better graphics, better or equal controls, more features andonline (it might not be the best, but it's there).Can-o-Mark
That is really all that needs to be said.
What bothers me is that all the games claiming to have "REALISTIC MOTION CONTROLS!!!" all seem to just me waggle sessions. Look at Zelda. What crappened to the Bow and Arrow realism? The sword controls were just waggle.
If this next-gen is just wrist pain then count me out.
Definitley a last gen console.

exactly
Maybe we will see that in the next Zelda, because right nowmost developersjust use Waggle and think it will do but later they will have to step it up. Metroid Prime 3 didn't have Waggle and it had great controllers, Super Mario Galaxy's mini games had great use of the Motion Sensing like when you had to stand on the Ball, but all you had to do to spin attack was Wave the controller around but the rest was great. What bothers me is that all the games claiming to have "REALISTIC MOTION CONTROLS!!!" all seem to just me waggle sessions. What exactly defines what gen a console is? Is it the power the console has? Nope.
Is it the innovation it brings like online (it was innovative in the Xbox's time) or the Wii-mote? Nope.
Is it when the console was released? I believe so. It was released during this generation of new consoles, so therefore it is current gen. That's the way I believe the generations are viewed.

I get where you're coming from. But the minigames in SMG like the ball rolling use the tilt functionallity of the Wiimote. Same with Prime 3.
We all know that if the 360 games looked like the Wii games, we would all label the 360 as a "last-gen" console simply because of its graphics.
People attempt to do this with the Wii, but it does not fit because the graphics are improved, as well as the console itself and the controller especially. This debate was ended a long time ago, and the final nail in the coffin was when SMG won GOTY.

Agreed. Console "generations" have never been a measure of overall "power"... it simply refers to when they were released.

if you really get wrist pain from it, you either have arthritis or you're lame.

jesus dude, you just don't stop with the Wii hating. Zelda was a launch game that was ported... of course it isn't perfect.
But look at games like:
Trauma Center and Z+W - Couldn't be done with any other controller
MoH H2 - The only console FPS game that can offer PC esc control with a standard controller
Madden and Warioware - made significantly more fun because of gesture control
Wii Bowling - yes, I know it's a pack in, but think up a better way to simulate bowling (and it proves that the Wiimote i the right hands can make games with a greater degree of control through motion)
Didnt Nintendo say themselves that the Wii wasn't 'Next Gen' but 'New Gen'? I think it was at one of the game shows pre-release. While I think the PS3 and 360 went a step forward, the Wii seems like it went a step to the side and a little forward, which i dont consider a bad thing at all.mulac2910
Yep, I believe they said that during E3 2006. And yeah it does have some truth in it. The Wii is next gen, but not in the way the PS3 and 360 are next gen.
As a PC gamer, I fail to see how any of these systems really can be considered a next gen system? Xbox360 and PS3 is more or less like their past relatives with more hardware crammed into them.. I at least see Nintendo as going a different root and trying to risk something with true innovation. sSubZerOo
Innovation, or lack of it, is too often brought up in these kinds of threads. What separates the 360 from the original xbox is not that different from what separated the SNES from the NES, but I don't hear anyone claiming that THEY weren't different generations.

That's just nintendo's view. the TRUE and REAL meaning of next gen is when consoles are released.
i say no. but it does offer innovative ideas. the wii channels have been done on PC for years. the controller is innovative but not always practical, and the mii's are.....well, they do exist. but as a console. yeah. its a last gen console with some perks.prodiqy32
If the Wii is simply a last gen console with some perks, then what does that make the PS3 and 360? You talk about how channels have been done on PC for years, well guess what, PC has also had the best graphics, online, and control for years too. At least the Wii and to an extent the PS3 are introducing something new with their consoles which hasn't really been used that much in the gaming scene for years (to my knowledge anyway) which is motion controls.
Can someone answer me if the tech gap between PS2 and Xbox is greater then or less then Wii and the 360? cosmostein77
Less.

No, I mean that would just be sad if both the 360 and PS3 were being pwned by a last gen console(sales wise).
[QUOTE="-supercharged-"]The wii is using old technology so that makes it a last gen console imoErkiduCompared to PCs, all consoles use old technology. Are they all last-gen?
Wow if you are comparing the Wii to PC's  it's prehistoric!!
It's just a last gen console with some fancy wireless tricks, not really enough to make it be seen as a 'next gen' console in my eyes...
I mean, come on, whats up with the barrage of numbers you need to know if you want to have anything to do with your friends on the terrible online??!!
A small, yet painfully awful, part of the Wii...

Nintendo is too paranoid and doesnt want to take the blame if someone meets up with someone because of their online service and something goes bad.

Congratulations on ignoring the fact that I pointed out your double standard. ;)Just go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28seventh_generation%29
You will see that the Wii is part of the seventh(current) generation of consoles, along with the DS, PSP, 360, and PS3.

This isn't a topic for opinion or debate. Wii is a current generation console by any rational definition of "current", "generation" or "current generation".
If you want to group Xbox 360 and PS3 in column "A" and the Wii in column "B", use the terms HD and SD. It's what they're there for.
I was shocked when I got it home and found out it did not support dolby digital sound, just pro logic 2. Everyone talks about the HD but the games sound a lot worse then they look.
The sound for the system will be a full decade out of date before this generation is over.
I still like my Wii becouse I like nintendo games. But I look forward to the day when they join modern gaming by releasing a console that does not have such awfull sound.

I'm sure someone pointed this out already...they had to have...or else I'm just completely insane.
The question is if "you consider the Wii a last-gen console", and the TC starts his post with "no",which meanshe doesn't consider it a last-gen console, and then goes on to say it is a last-gen console with perks? I see... *goes to next thread*

Ultimatly i agree with the last option... It came out this gen so it's current gen.

your right. no- its not a current gen. im tired!Mate - all the consoles are last generation, with their INSANE hardware.
The Wii might have the worst of all but its not aiming for graphics. The PS3 and the 360 are, and for the most part, fail miserably in that department.
