Here on SW it often looks most people don't and to be quite honest I see where they're coming from. The differences between the Wii and the HD twins are vastly larger than those between the twins themselves. The marketing and target audience is comepletely different too. One could argue they're not competing for the same sales (to an extent at least, the demographics will definitely overlap).

On the other hand, a gaming console is a gaming console. So from that perspective you could consider them in competiotion. However, is this too simple? You can't say that a car is a car, for example. A family SUV is not in direct competion with a luxurious sedan.

Where does SW stand on this?

Yes, they are.

Who cares if they used a different strategy to pull in gamers? Offering what your competitors don't is one of the most important things a company can do. Motion controls have brought on some great games, and it makes strategy games possible on consoles without dumbing them down too much.

Sony and MS creating their own motion control peripherals is proof enough that the Wii is competiting with them.

No and never have.... I wish I had never bought the system, but theres nothing I can do about that now. I do like some of the up coming games that are coming out for it. But I just cant be asked to play on a system with horrible online and lack of HD support, and the Wii controller is a huge negative for me. I dont really see it competing with the PS3/360... they are just very different.

I don't get it. Why wouldn't theWii be considered a console. It sells more than both HD consoles combined. It sells the most games, and it is played more than any other console.

yes. its not directly competing in terms of features n stuff with them but it is in the same market going after the same customers. the sony and MS competition is like two trans atlantic ship liners competing with each other to get customers who want to go accross the atlantic. the wii and HD console competition is more like trans atlantic ship liners vs trans atlantic air liners. same customers....2 very different services but very much in competition.

Although the current line-up is rather weak IMO, it does have great games such as SMG2.

Yah, I think Nintendo actually had a press conference where they used a similar analogy with Southwestern Airlines. They put it that Southwestern Airlines wasn't trying to directly compete with other airlines because it'd fall flat on it's face, but rather competing with industries like the bussing industry. Both get you going to where you want to go, but they do go about getting you there in different ways. This was back in 2005 or so when they had that press conference.

Sony/MS are the bussing industries, and Nintendo is Southwestern Airlines. Sony/MS are trying to open up a small airport, though.

No, they are different markets which means one would be likely to buy either a ps3/360 and a Wii, or one of the two HD consoles or the Wii.

Yeah. If you're in the same industry you're competing, especially if other companies start copying you. The fact that the Wii has a different demograph doesn't change that.

Yep.

Its simply too far behing PC/360/PS3 to be considered a competitor or even part of this gen.

That being said, the Wii is a fantastic console.

I don't think the Wii is really trying to be in competition with the HD twins. The Wii is looking out for more of the New "Casual" gamers out there. The 360 and PS3 are after the more experienced "Hardcore" gamers. However is seems that Microsoft is trying to start a competition with Nintendo for the Casual gamers.

Hmm, considering the fact that the PS3 and the 360 are releasing motion control devices solely to catch up to the Wii, I'd say it is competition.

In a competition? Yes. How huge of a competition? Not very.

From where I'm sitting, the audience for Kinect/Move consists primarily of those who bought a 360/PS3 all the way back at launch and hasn't bought a Wii yet. There's no way Microsoft could justify $200 for a 360 and another $150 on top of that for motion controls plus $60 for a game. $410 for a 360 with Kinect vs $220 for a Wii? I'd take the Wii. Sony's in a similar situation.

How many people are there that don't have a Wii? I don't know, but I'm willing to believe the numbers aren't big enough to threaten Nintendo. Certainly Microsoft and Sony though.

It's in a league of it's own.SaltyMeatballs

Of course they're in competition. That's why you see Move, Kinect, SIXAXIS, etc. Microsoft and Sony are trying to catch up to Nintendo in that regard. Likewise, the direct competition from XBL and PSN is why you see Nintendo at least attempting to broaden their online horizons (even though they're still far behind in that respect). The average consumer only has X amount of entertainment dollars to spend. A fraction of X is set aside for video games. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all want the biggest piece of that fraction possible.

Business wise, no. Its not in competition with the PS3 and 360.

Games wise, ofcourse, its a game console. It plays games.

The wii is a great example of why we shouldn't care about sales, and why we should compare games, not exclusives.

Competing in that Nintendo made a gaming console, as did the other companies. However, Nintendo has gone for a wider target audience, thus is has a different strategy for compared to Sony and Microsoft. Of course, now the other have gone the way of motion control and are trying to get part of Nintendo's audience. Funny how that works.

Nope. Its like a branch from the main continuum of the generational progression; one that kind of doesn't meet up with the 360 and PS3 (why are they called "the twins," does that imply they don't offer different experiences?) but surpasses the offerings of last generation, and is focused in an entirely different way than the other two consoles.

Just because it offers a different experience doesn't mean it is not in competition. Nintendo clearly wants the casual audience, but so do Microsoft (Kinect) and Sony (Move). Sony and Microsoft clearly want the core audience, but so does Nintendo (Sin and Punishment 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Skyward Sword, DKC Returns, Pikmin III, etc).

But it isn't. Its leaps and bounds ahead of the PS3 and 360 in terms of hardware sales, and its focus is on a very different audience. You can't deny that its not a traditional console focused on the core gamer. Its on an entirely different road than the 360 and PS3, one that unfortunately, the 360 and PS3 are trying to jump to as well.

The Wii is doing extraordinarily well... for reasons other than what have made consoles successful in the past.

That's all that matters, really. As long as your product is outselling the competition, that's the most important part. Same industry, same deal.

All of that is well beyond the point. Again, Nintendo is COMPETING for Sony and Microsoft's audience in ADDITION on the one it has already secured (which Sony and Microsoft are in turn trying to take with Move and Kinect). If Nintendo weren't going after Sony and Microsoft's audience, why would they publish games like Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Battalion Wars II, Disaster: Day of Crisis, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid: Other M, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Punch-Out, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, Super Paper Mario, Trauma Center (PAL), Zack and Wiki (PAL), Pikmin 3, or Fatal Frame IV (Japan)? You can't tell me Nintendo is trying to capture the same audience with Wii Play and Nintendogs that they are with Sin and Punishment and Fire Emblem. If it were as you are implying, Nintendo would simply keep cranking out Nintendogs, NSMB, and Wii (insert word here) games and ignore everything else. But they very obviously are not. They're making games like Super Paper Mario and Battalion Wars.

Who says they aren't? The majority of the focus of the Wii is on the new market they've opened up... and only 4 years after its release are they actually putting some effort into producing titles for core gamers.
