A lot of the games out there with high production values also come with extremely deep stories and backstories. Although the main story is the center of attention, many times, if you take the time to look, you may often discover tidbits of lore of whichever universe you may happen to be in.

For example, in Metroid Prime, scanning computer terminals or the like will sometimes give you pirate transmittion messages or other left-behind messages. The same goes for Fallout 3, where a plethora of stories await you in every nook and cranny - be it preserved letters or computer diaries. And for many other RPGs, like Guild Wars etc...

In my case, I never take the time to read these, as I am always more excited to get into the game. The only exception is the codex from Mass Effect - for some reason it fascinates me; I take the time to read all the entries. But maybe that's just what I'm more into.

How about you guys? Do you take the time to follow the backstories and read all the little bits of information scattered throughout the game or do you prefer to keep the reading to a minimum and keep the blasting to a maximum?

Nope. If there was a series where I would follow the story... it would be Street Fighter. But as much as I play it... I don't know or care what the story/backstory of any of the characters are.

I never bother - if they can't be bothered to present it to me in a semi-interesting way, I can't be bothered to read it. It never has any real impact on the game anyway.

I use to really enjoy the background story for Mortal Kombat. Which I still thinks has the best story of all the fighting games. But to answer your question...Yes, I love good background stories.

I did with Mass Effect. I read the first novel before the game was released, and read the 2nd afterwards. Both had quite an intriguing story and managed to flesh out the universe quite a bit.

Yes I do. It adds to the immersion and I start caring for the characters. This is in RPGs though, I don't care about stories in other games.

Depends on the game and how much interest I have in it.

Depends on the game. In some games, reading the backstory information is a must to understand the inner workings of the story while in others it's just supplementary stuff that doesn't really affect the experience one way or another.

It depends on if the story is interesting, and how the info is presented. Elder Scrolls handles it quite well, I think, since the main quests just present you with the vital aspects of the backstory and let you do your own research in books if you want to know more about any subject.

Getting into the back story of Heavenly Sword (downloadable anime videos on PSN) made the game one of the best told stories this gen, to me.

The thing about including vast amounts of backstory in a game is that it's something that's every easy for the developer to abuse. Some developers seem to just use it as an excuse for the main story to be wafer-thin and insubstantial. A lot of big games seem to be doing this recently (Gears Of War, Killzone 2) and it's a trend that I can't say I like.

It depends on if I really like the game or stories to begin with. A recent one I picked up was the Gears of War book (not joking lol) and wished the storyline in the game was more like some parts in the book and some of the emotions that can be grabbed from it.

Yes, I do. I look into the Resistance universe, as well as R&C, Jak, Killzone, Metal Gear, and many more. Story matters alot in a game for me.:) As long as it's there in a good fashion, then I'll go searching for it.

I liked the story in the Metal Gear Solid Universe, MetroidUniverse, alot of different RPGs.

Depends. So far the only backstory I've read was the Silent Hill series.

ALWAYS. I absolutely loved all the Codex Entries and Historically Related Conversations in Mass Effect, they breathed so much life into that universe. And I think that all the scanning and what not was one of the best parts of Metroid Prime.

And nothing dissappoints me more than when you have a game with a somewhat interesting setting with a really bland backstory (Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc.)

If it's in the game yes I do, I feel that's part of the game. But when you have to go to websites to know these backstories then no. I rather experience and find out everything while playing the game.

It's one of my favorite parts of a game. It's what's immersive for me. Learning more about the inhabitants or world the writers created. Story, upfront or background is essential for me. Take Obliviov, Im reading every book I come across. It fascinates me that they go to this depth with their created world.

sometimes. i remember having a nice relaxing read about all the back story stuff in the prime series and mass effect. i also remember reading a load of books in the library at vivec in morrowind. if its interesting then i will give it a look in my own time. its a far better way than having everything shoved down ure throat in cutscenes and FMVs. imho. much better for games
