I like level building games, but I feel like Mario games should only be designed by Nintendo. Playing someone else's creation doesn't appeal to me as much. Nintendo games have always been expertly designed. What fun would it be to make it yourself? I ask you SW since you guys know everything.

You don't have to make them yourself. You can enjoy the thousands of quality stages that will be created by the users. I'm excited, loved LBP, this will be just as good.

The game comes installed with 100 levels built by skilled level designers. The rest is up to the community. The level design features seem pretty sweet stuff and crafted together in a well implemented way to provide a fun experience. I cant wait to get my hands on some of the tools and try to make a few levels.

I cant see anything inherently bad about allowing users to create levels in Mario. I played LBP back in the day and although I am not a huge cutesy mascot, platformer guy it had some fun to be had. In Project Spark I have yet to create anything of my own. All I do is play other people's stuff and some of it is down right fun and interesting to play.

Not the act of building levels, that's too time consuming and I'm employed, but playing other peoples creations absolutely.

What if WiiU launched with a Mario game which was NSMBU with Mario Maker built in. Would that have sold systems?

Mario Maker would be a game I would buy if I had a Wii U. I would be the douche that makes levels with lava and bullet bills consistently coming at you plus the added bonus of boos stalking you in the level. Yup forgot out the long jumps you need to make with a Yoshi. Ah I can see it now.

well, lets start with that "Nintendo games have always been expertly designed," comment and we'll unravel from here.

first of all, levels in mario games are designed with a broad appeal to a broad audience. i do not fit every single one of these demographs, therefore, the levels cannot possibly be expertly designed for my tastes. second, levels are just created by people. that said, i can say i have probably played more mario games and levels than most people on any development team making these games. so i would have a lot to say on the matter of design. third, adding more influence to the pot of design breeds new ideas not yet circulated. its sortas like the modding comunity with PC games... they breed ideas and new content for us to play.

if you take all this in mind, it should be hard to understand why something like this is appealing to many. sounds to me like you got some elitist stick up your butt keeping you from enjoying general Mario content not made directly by Nintendo themselves. thats a problem. it will only hinder you from enjoying and playing games. not trying to be hostile here, but you asked.

Its just Little Big Planet but with Mario paint and physics.

I never made a single level in LBP, but the community was awsome tho. And it was co-op which I dont think Mario Maker has.

To me these level building features should be a secondary bonus part of a game not the main feature.

@ten_pints: They are not the main feature, the game comes with a single player campaign over 100 levels long.

I find the concept appealing, but unfortunately that's as far as it extends. My creativity sucks. It takes skill (and dare I say effort) to construct decent levels. It's difficult for me to jump into level or game creation tools on foundation already established, as I feel out of place in someone else's brainstorm. For one, rules are already set, rules I have to get familiar with and comply by in their dictates of game logic I've not been privy to since inception. If I'm going to create something, I want unmitigated freedom and the context of the evolution of tool sets they exist and stem from.

Yea. Thing is, if I'm to create, I want to create. As in, not just place pre-defined developmental assets within an already established framework. It would either need to be from the ground on up, or not at all. Simple level layout (as MM seems to focus on) is a far cry from actually determining what's to be found within the level in the first place.

Having a game with the quality controls/mechanics of mario with a simple and easy to use level creator could be amazing. I'm hoping for the inclusion of star coins. The clever way in which Nintendo hid those was always the best part of the New Super Mario Bros. games. Having that extra layer of depth to creating levels would make this far more appealing to me.

@Pikminmaniac:I agree with something like that. I would love to make adventure levels where you can collect some things within the level. It would add extra depth and replayability to the levels. I think your suggestion of Star Coins is perfect.

Honestly no. I don't have the creative mind to make levels, nor do i want to put the effort in doing so. I have no skill in creating player content even in little big planet so I will play the levels within the game and player created ones. maybe if i tried and put actual effort i might have some potential but i doubt it lol.

I was always impressed by how Nintendo could create such fun levels in mario games. they have some genius minds working there.

Making the levels myself? No.

Playing a bunch of community levels with mechanics that are actually good? yes, that appeals to me.

Haven't designed a level or any content in ages. Used to do so many years ago. It was a lot of fun. So, I can see the appeal of Mario Maker for those who are interested in stuff like this. It's addicting if you love video games.

IMHO sometimes the 2D perspective allows for much stronger design. Platformers and fighters are two genres that I feel excel in that format. I feel like time has nothing to do with it. It's just a different format.

I mean are you surprised the nintendo that made wii music wasn't making games like Super Mario Maker, and the Nintendo that actually green lit 2 new ips that weren't mini game collections did?

Different priorities, but as an "answer to LBP" is a bit of a stretch, it is however a bit long over due, better later than never.

Heh, so true. Even anime games were making Smash clones long before them (see: Battlestadium D.O.N)

Anyway, to answer TC's question... yes. Nintendo even made an interview with Ubisoft's Michel Ancel on him making levels for Mario Maker (speaking of which, would be cool if we got Ancel's stages playable too).

It's essentially the difference between freedom and precision challenge/design. I have a spot for both personally.

I think nintendo should be pushing the playing levels part more. The appeal to me is the huge and never ending variety of levels to play. Not just trying to make a level myself. The issue is im not buying a wii U for one game even though I want to play it. Maybe port it to PS 4?

Its going to be an endless amount of levels that is the appeal and why its worth 60. I think a lot of casuals wont understand it and get the point so I dont think its going to sell that amazingly

Which is confuzzling considering all the criticism they've gotten over the years and you'd think that would knock down their expectations by a lot. Not even George Lucas has that high of expectations these days.

Yeah, but Media Molecule can't design levels for shit, thus the community needs to do it =p
