By this I mean do you choose to buy or not buy a game or system because of a more philosophical element in the game industry. For instance I will buy Rock Band over Guitar Hero any day of the week because Guitar Hero coming from Activision feel very manufactured, in the feeling of the company making it just to drive profits and hit millions, evident by just snapping up whoever they think the "kids" will be into, such as Metalica, Areosmith so on and so forth, while Rock Band has this very homey vibe coming out of the developers, their ideas of how music games should unfold, and their overall personality of "we like music too" attitude and all of those guys formerly in bands, it just feels a lot more passionate and more homemade.

Same with the Wii too as in even though I really like casual games such as web-based games, Bejeweled, and stuff like that, but I'd rather not have that be the "image" of the game industry. I'd rather have games with more heavy focus on using it as a medium in an artistic format as the forefront to get the mainstream to accept games as art.

And it doesn't have to exclusively philosophical either, as in one of the maybe reasons you would buy a Xbox 360 is because it's an American console, therefore by buying it you are supporting the American economy.

So do you guys have any morals when buying systems or games?

Not really, i'll buy what I think/know i'll enjoy. I bought 3 PS2's so far in my lifetime so im probably responsible in some way for the deaths of some poor fellows, but I loved the PS2 so it's all good :D

Nope, during the transaction, I lose all my morals. While it's taking place, I feel free to kill and steal anything around me. Fortunately, the transactions don't last long, and when I have the game in the bag and am walking out the door, my ethics return, and I feel bad for the momentary lack in ethos.

They're definitely a factor. For example Sony's shenangians (particularly the rootkit fiasco and E3 05) haven't exactly helped convince me to buy a PS3.

Absolutely not. I'm smart enough to know that ideals and business don't mix. If I were to think such things I would never buy a PS3 because I want the game industry to be thought of as a game industry, not a movie industry. I would not buy Gears of War or part 2 because Epic people are such *****.

If I were to think that way it would not even make a dent in my ideals and I would be denied good systems and games.

No, I've never really thought about it. For the same reason I don't walk into the movie theater thinking about morals.

Morals? :|

I don't let the shenanigans go that for. If I see a game I want or system, I buy it. All companies want the same thing... money, and that's it, the bottom line. No one does it "for the good of ___" ever. You can play your moral values if you wish, but frankly I don't feel anything towards a company in general. I see a product I want, I buy it. The games/hardware manufacturers "philosphy" or morals do not apply.

If I buy and enjoy Title A and want more titles like it compared to Title B, than I buy Title A and hope that company will continue making mroe games like Title A over B. It's just going to happen that way though, but if my favored game doesn't sell well compared to title B because of the market penetration, there's nothing I can do but hope.

The only morals I face when buying a game:

I think I can go a month or two without toilet paper.

Nothing at all that you said has to do with morals

Also the America part? Please brush up on console parts and where they're made and sold.

So no one here bought Galactic Civilizations or any Stardock game because of their DRM free philosophy? Reading this makes me feel really bad for the gaming industry at large...

Are you blind? Try reading it agian.

And Microsoft is an American company, dispite the fact where the console parts are made, and they are primarly sold here, as I remember ATI is a canadian company, and IBM is an American based company they support the economy of the dizzying North American market more than a company based in Japan.

Bottem line, the Xbox is a console that more so supports the North American economy than the Wii or the PS3.

Is that really 'morals' though or is that simply 'brand (dis)loyalty'? I ask this because 'morals' to me is synonymous with 'ethics', 'the distinguishment between right and wrong' and it's not like Sony is some evil baby-eating corporation as far as I know. I can understand the rootkit part as it could be viewed immoral to support immoral conduct such as privacy invasion and opening major security breaches though Sony's E3 '05 presentation, as ridiculous as it was (Or at least to my memory), I can't recall any one thing they said that would constitute immoral conduct.

Not particularly, the closest thing I've done to what you've said is that I bought a lesser known game to support it instead of going for the big name game I was originally going to go for.

My parents will let me buy the most brutal, gruesome, horrifying, devil worshiping games... but if there is just ONE naked female nipple I can't have it.

EDIT: I heard in some other country it's the other way around.

No. Especially not for your reasons. I find them completely immoral.

If the game is good. I will show support for it with my money. Depending on it's quality, I will purchase it at full price or wait until it devaluates. Anything else is nothing but subjective and I feel fanboyistic.

If the game is good and doesn't come with negative things (rootkits, whatever), I will purchase it. I won't do an action detrimental to myself (not enjoying a game, or doing something illegal like theft) just to punish a company for being good at what it does. It actually baffles me to think that some people do this.

Very little.

I do rather spend money on PC than a console just because it's an open platform, but in the end that wouldn't stop me from switching if some console would appeal to me more. And with PC HW I always just go for the best bang for the buck whatever the company.

And some devs do appeal to me more than others. Stardock, Valve, Blizzard, CDProjekt are all very supportive of their customers so I'm more likely to buy their games than the competititors.
