Like do you want most people to know you are a gamer? Or is it just for friends?

I used to keep it to myself at work but now I am constantly telling people I am a geek and love my games. Sometimes one of my clients will say something that makes me think he is a gamer and I will get into a fun conversation.
The only thing sometimes people think you are wierd when I mention I love pc games like starcraft, rome2 and civ5. Most people out there are thinking about cod and madden when you say games.
Nah, a lot of non gamers are grossly un-educated about video games, so it can be a good starting point to a discussion about them.
A lot of people I know still think that video games are solely responsible for pretty much every violent crime where the suspect plays a video game at some point in their life...
It really just depends on who I am talking to. I mean I don't lie about it or anything, but I'm not going to just go up to older people at work and start talking games when they have no interest in them and think they are childish because I want to be taken serious professionally.
I don't hide it but find most aren't as interested in the subject as me. Gaming is a big part of my life so it's impossible for my hobby to not bleed into my real/work life.
I'm a graphic designer by trade so it's hard to avoid the subject when I do something like print a magazine about video games that I designed people tend to ask questions haha. I find it hard to find someone to get into deep conversation about games though which is where I'm mostly interested. I'd rather not talk about how brolicious the last CoD game was and more about how Independent developers and AAA studios are creating a stable games market after a shaky generation where it seems both sides are starting to feel their place. Indie devs, take risks and experimental leaps where the AAA studios play it safe and wait for the gaming populace to latch on to something from the indy scene before making their own moves.
and other stuff, hell even among my gamer friends it's hard to talk about deep stuff like that.
Yes, i also never tell anyone that i listen to hip hop music & 80s music, or that i watch TV series and movies, or God help me if anyone in my entourage finds out i love to read manga and books that i purchase online.
My foul, unholy secrets shall never be revealed.
Hell naw! I'm me and will show it to the death of me :P. I understand some people don't wish to reveal or share their precious hobbies. It could be a personal thing for some, or something they are ashamed of, or just shy. But I like to express my many avocations whenever I can, namely where it's relevant. I don't annoyingly flaunt it, though. Many people I meet don't initially presume that I adore video games, fantasy, writing, movies, anime, philanthropy, comics, computer configuration, and sci-fi. They're always surprised, lol.
I say if you surround yourself with like minded folks, the happier and more comfortable you'll be. As a result, I have a lovely lady who is a core gamer as well, and is playing through Resident Evil 4 on the Wii right now ;). She revisited SotC a few months ago as well. We watch each other game all of the time (especially Dota 2!). Though, she isn't a game enthusiast like me when it comes to following and researching game development.
I do, although my friends and family game. They are the types of people that go out and purchase Madden, NBA, and CoD every year, and the type that buy into the whole Kinect/Wii thing. I just don't show this side of me to them, although they do know that I play games on PC. They don't know how deep it goes.
I constantly bore my friends, family, colleagues and clients by waffling on about computer games. It's pretty much the only subject I can have a real conversation about. That or football (not Egg-Hand, real Football).
I'm not really into music and if someone starts talking to me about their new car, traffic or the weather I just switch off.
Proud gamer since 1985 ZX Spectrum.
I am a true basement dweller.
No friends,no gf,no social life and absolutely no contact with the outside world.
I tell everyone I know about my rig and why it's better than their console. I also tell them that I watch WWE and my favourite guy is Damien Sandow
Course not, it's my favourite hobby and has been since I was 3. I have over half a dozen a consoles and a PC hooked up to my TV with walls covered in games. I even did a 4 year Games Design course in college and though I work as a regular programmer for now (9 - 5 baby, **** vidya game dev year long cruch cycles) I am still very interested in one day making a game.
In short games are the best entertainment going, why would I hide my love of them? :D
nah not hiding it, but not promoting it either.
Basicly if the different polls are to be belived over here, around 50% of all people in my country aperrently are gamers, reguardless of sex, age and whatnot.
It is jut not the best of icebreakers, and I certainly dislike the gaming debates.
I used to hide it on highschool, at least to some extent...but after i went to collegue i got to know a lot of people who were also gamers, so i felt more confident in my hobby, nowadays, even if my coworkers are not into gaming at all, i don't hide it anymore.
