I recently finished Luigi’s Mansion and have recently started playing The World Ends With You. I normally don’t play a lot of retro games but these were on my list for a while. Still enjoyable gen in today’s times. How about you, SW? Do you play retro games? Which ones?

I played a few Neo Geo,Xbox and 360 games as they become available via BC. I didn't own a 360 until late last gen because the PS3 delivered for the most part.

Are we referring to older games as retro, or do you mean games that are made in the style of old games (the true meaning of retro).

Either way, I play both. As @davillain- said you wouldn't be a legit gamer if you didn't. I appreciate all games from all years, though admittedly if I was not present for the game during it's release I find it hard to play it in the context of modern standards.

I probably play the original Deus Ex about three times a year; to this day, from the day it showed up on my hard drive almost 20 years ago, I have played it that often.

As far as modern retro games, I like Dead Cells, Hyper Light Drifter, and some others. The whole rogue-like thing isn't really for me and a lot of those games are made in the retro style, but I still like to try them out. The fact that a lot of these often-excellent independent titles are only about 5-10 dollars and offer a lot of bang for the buck doesn't hurt either when it comes to experimenting with genres you're unsure about.

And, not to be "that guy", but why is such a fun and light-hearted discussion in System Wars and not Games Discussion? C'mon people the wrong forum is alive and well while the right forum is barely holding on.

Oh yeah, I enjoy playing some of the classics from the golden era. My preferred retro games that I like to go back and play again are mainly games from the SNES, Neo Geo, and 90’s arcade games.

Yes all the time right now I'm actually replaying Indigo Prophecy and Mirror's Edge I guess the 00's are considered retro now since it's 10 years and older.

I play a ton of 8 bit and 16 bit retro games on Retroarch using Launchbox as the front end. From original Gameboy to arcade. One thing about the original Gameboy that I love is the fact that it has so many popular franchises but instead of just creating a dumbed down version from the console they made unique sequels and spin-offs that are really good. Like Mario Land 2...not only was it unique in the Mario universe, it was damn good.

Luigi's mansion is considered retro now? Either way I tend to play more retro games than new. I find that they tend to be consistently more satisfying than more modern stuff.

I overall love retro games more than modern games and I spend at least half of my gaming time on retro games.

And a lot of the modern games that I do play and enjoy the most are the ones that are made in the style of retro games.

Without a doubt. It's really all I play. Catching up on older classics. I'm a big fan of 2D/3D platformers.

I have about 800 retro games. Everything from the NES and Genesis to the PS2 and Original Xbox. I collect for just about everything except the Saturn and Dreamcast. I've been collecting for close to 12 years. Most recently I've been playing my genesis and Star War Knights of the OId Republic.

Absolutely. I'm known, among those who know me at all, as a cow around here, but in reality I'm a huge sheep. I just don't like the Switch. My thing is NES/SNES. I literally play games on those two systems like every other day. I'm also a huge Genesis fan. I probably play retro more than modern when it comes down to it. And that's thanks to an older brother of mine who introduced me to gaming when I was five...and gave me his entire console/game collection. :)

Not sure since I haven't played other versions. The PSP version isn't very rewarding in my opinion... that's just because I am a first timer with this game.

I play those pretty often because I want a break from sad, post-apocalyptic, war-like plots, which modern games seem to be all about - bar indie games and Nintendo of course.

The retro games I play are mainly the ones available on current gen systems. Mega drive collection and ones released on the ps and ms store. I'm interested in picking up a mega drive mini looking at the list of 30 announced games so far. Still 10 left so very interested in seeing how it goes.

In general I'm not a old school gamer. I, for some reason, cannot play old games unless I played it back in the days.

A lot of 3D games doesn't ages well compare to 2D. That's why I can pop up a old Mario or Sonic games every once a while, but can't replay MGS1 without being frustrated.

Two simple reasons:

  1. Games Discussion isn't that active as System Wars, it gets very little traffic. Nothing wrong with having light-hearted discussion here in SW from time to time and I hardly if ever act a fool here anyways.
  2. Games Discussion has too damn many spambots to ruin the place and while I always view GD as a safe heaven for regular gamers like me, we see barley any moderators to come and mod the place and it makes it very hard to even not get spambots ruining someone else thread.

Sorry if I'm being that guy, but I like seeing more light-heart threads nowadays in SW.

I'm about to play Chrono Cross. I LOVE Chrono Trigger but never played Chrono Cross before. I am saving money for some cool gaming gear so I don't have much to spend on games this June. But I think Chrono Cross will keep me busy for a while.

Can someone please tell me what qualifies for retro. Are the original Max Payne, Halo & Shenmue games retro? If so then yes I play retro games. Twitch doesn't consider those games retro, more like the SNES or PS1 eras etc. I mostly play on the 360. I use it way more than my Xbox One as I still have a huge backlog on it.

The Mega drive mini is my most anticipated system in terms of retro. The library of excellent game with still 10 more to come. The retro bit 6 button pad is a must have with SF 2 championship edition on the system.

Haven't played retro games on their respective systems in a long time, but I sometimes get the urge to play some NES or SNES on more recent systems like Wii U, 3DS, Switch or PC.

It depends on who you ask. Retro to me is like from NES to N64 era. Probaby because that's when I was a "kid". GC, PS2 and Xbox doesn't feel quite retro to me. Max Payne wouldn't be retro to me either. I'm 31. If I were 23 now or something I bet I'd call it retro.

I have mainly played Final Fantasy 1-6, including all kinds of hacks. I have also completed the Shining Force series multiple times on Sega Genesis and Gamegear. Sometimes I even give good old Sonic 1 on Sega Genesis a go.

Yes. I still have my Dreamcast hooked up to an old plasma TV. I also have the Nes/Snes classics and my WiiU/3DS VC titles. I have a Data East self contained mini arcade cabinet as well. I also play new games inspired by reto gaming. Axiom Verge/Shovel Knight type games.

I find it very interesting that retro games are kind of making a resurgence. Arcade one up cabs and the mega drive mini on the horizon the future is looking positive.

Way more than new games.
