I can play games with them both. I enjoy games with cartoony graphics like Mario, and Crackdown was okay. But I am more attracted to games with realistic world graphics like Gears of War, Final Fantasy, COD3, Forza etc. What's your personal preference, if you have one?

Real. I dealt with plenty of games that had cartoon graphics during the 8 and 16-bit eras.

J/K. I prefer both, Wind Waker looked really cool.

I prefer cartoony like graphics, but I love both styles. Normally though games with cartoony graphics seem to have alot more jokes (or at least jokes that I enjoy more) and I love me some comedy.

Style is what makes graphics stand out on each game... If executed correctly. Cartoony is easy on the eye and is easy to perfect. Realistic graphics have some way to go but are welcomed. I think 'Cartoony' should change to 'Abstract'.

LOL. yes, but you can still have realistic models of things in a fantasy setting. I'm more attracted to games that have realistic models of "fantasy" things, if that makes sense.

Wholly depends on the type of game and what type of mood and theme(s) they are trying to portray. Some work better in one than the other. I like Cartoony a bit more though because it is very flexible and allows for more artistic license.

You can take a realistic world applied to a stylized cartoon like graphics allowing for more dramatization of events and actions that would look out of place in a realistic setting. Look at Anime movies or shows, the cartoony style allows for distortions and exaggeration's of bodies, emotions and everything that would be really bad looking in something like Gears of War which is trying to be extremely realistic looking. It sounds totally lame, but I think a game that took on the style of Take on Me by A-Ha would be awesome. A really gritty and action packed game that constantly looked like a moving a pencil drawing would be awesome. Also work with a game like Max Payne where its a psychological thriller where someone is completely losing it and nothing is as it seems and is also moving and changing, distorting all over.

I don't think you get it, realistic doesn't necessary mean realistic world. You can still have Link (from LOZ series) to have realisitc clothes, boots, swords and so on and still have an elf face with the LOZ art style. Or for example
Kimahri cartoon -> Kimahri Realistic

cartoony games generally have a lot of variety between the styles
gritty realistic games i dont see being so varied.. all the characters wear some type of armor and most people are going to be creating things just emulating stuff seen in gears , MK for example
id say as far as programming, creating a vivid cellshaded world is more of a challenge for a coder... the worlds are much more alive than a realistic world
but now for reference, not ****related, my fav graphics were the FF8 Cut scenes... a futuristic anime ish world
most realism games are focused on complete realism.. no scifi elements... the same crap we've seen the past 500 mil realistic war games..... but when they lean towards making things quirkier it turns out really nice

when it comes to cutscenes in totally realistic games(nothing with giant bosses or anything)... no matter how many polygons you put into that cgi, i'm generally going to skip it
give me some scifi action, preferably hand to hand combat with unrealistic physics, as long as it's animated well , i'm all for it

It depends on the game. Imagine a cell shaded Gears of War. Imagine a realistic Mario. Mario would be a fat Italian guy running through a Willy Wonka looking world while high on shrooms! Actually that sounds pretty wicked.

It depends if they are running at a good frame rate.

I would take a cartoon running at 60 fps than a hyper realistic game running at 15 fps.

I like both, but it depends on the game itself. I have a slight preference for cartoony graphics. It can look good without being overly technical. Even 8 bit/16 bit era graphics can still look pretty because of the cartoony style.

LittleBigWorld is PIXAR realistic, where they mix real details with cool animations.

Sonic is anime in 3D.

Depends heavily on the game, how seriously it takes itself and the genre. I'd prefer racing games with a more gritty realistic look (even if the gameplay isn't realistic like Burnout) but for a platformer I would prefer a cartoony look Ratchet and Clank.

I prefer artistic graphics.

For instance World of Warcraft is completely unrealistic looking, low resolution textures everywhere. But look at the environments in that game, they're amazing to look at.

Half-Life 2 is very realistic looking. But there's a 1984 meets Russian Revolution ambiance with a science fiction look that works astoundingly.

And then there are the cartoony graphics of Jet Grind Radio, but the astounding cel-shading makes you feel like you're playing a comic book.

I don't prefer cartoony and I don't prefer realistic, I prefer artistic.

Depends on the game, but after seeing GRAW2 and a few other 360 games with "realistic" graphics I am leaning more and more towards a less realistic look. Don't get me wrong GRAW2 is sublime in the graphics department but the huge swathes of brown are quite off putting, becomes too hard to see especially in jungle environments.

On a side note less realistic is actually becoming more realistic for me, I seem to find less realistic worlds more believable and immersive... go figure.
