I prefer artistic graphics.

For instance World of Warcraft is completely unrealistic looking, low resolution textures everywhere. But look at the environments in that game, they're amazing to look at.

Half-Life 2 is very realistic looking. But there's a 1984 meets Russian Revolution ambiance with a science fiction look that works astoundingly.

And then there are the cartoony graphics of Jet Grind Radio, but the astounding cel-shading makes you feel like you're playing a comic book.

I don't prefer cartoony and I don't prefer realistic, I prefer artistic.

Both. It depends on games. Would you imagine a realistic mario? or a cartoony gears of wars?

This is a good question... I think both are needed for an artist to express what they want to express in a game. I'd even go as far as to say that a perfect game would be a combination of both. I think a good comparison would be Windwaker and Twilight Princess. While Windwaker made the players happy, it didn't make the players take it seriously enough because the cartoonish feel was too exagerated to make the players able to relate to real life. And when Ninty made TP, there wasn't enough "magical" moments in the game that the cartoon art can express in the game, therefore making the game too dull at times. Both need to be present nowadays with powerful CPUs and GPUs.

I like both. And graphics styles that don't fit into either category, and graphics styles that are blend of the categories, and so on. But only if there is noticeable amount of attention to detail.

Well it depends on the game, if the character is not human its ok for the game to be cartoony, but if the game has a human or something real like hmm gow, resident, tomb raider, etc etc it should be as realistic as possible.

depends on the game and the feel like wind waker in my opinion would be worse with realstic graphics cuz it had such an upbeat feel to it and the cartoony graphics accomidated to the feel but TP was very meloncholy and the realistic graphics added to that feel all depends on the game

I love the Cartoony looking games because realistic graphics are usually too shiny and they hurt my eyes, also Final Fantasy looked Cartoony up until FFX.

Agreed. Sometimes gritty is good, sometimes cartoon is good. Who wants just one style?
