I only care because of the positive or negative hype a review can bring. And that hype can influence other gamers.
But, fairly often, i disagree with the scoring. I have my own opinions, just like everyone in here. And I may have enjoyed a game more than a writer and, therefore, we would differ on score.
Dont care at all about review scores, i play the games i want to play and have no interest in anyone elses opinion of them.

When was the last time you played a game that scored 5.5 or below and enjoyed it? While reviews are not the be-all and end-all of a game they are a great barometer for how the game is likely to play when stacked against others in it's genre.
Not all reviews are to be trusted, minor differences in scores are to be ignored but a great game will never score below a 7 and a rubbish game will never score above an 8.

The day you realise scores are just an opinion is your first step towards never becoming a fanboy. Great games regardless of the system help the industry as a whole. The fact Bioshock is getting great press is awsome and MGS4 looks to reinvent the genre it created and Mario is coming with his greatest adventure yet. The best thing you could do for yourself if you can afford to is own all 3 systems and never have to miss a great game again.Khansoulicant afford all 3 because i spent all my moneys on a hdtv so i think ill just sit in the corner and cry
Not gamespot rewiews. I think gamespot rewiews by how good the game is technology vise.
The fun level of a game is different for everybody. However, the technology will always be the same. This is one of the reasons the Wii get lower rewiew scores on Gs than on Ign and other sites.
Also remember a small fraction of gamers actually surf these sites like us to see the reviews. Khansoulthats true but i dont really care if it sells either as long as i have my fun but some dudes act as if a consoles crap because of 1 low score its actually prity funny but sometimes enough is enough
or do you just thirst for ownage?i mean just because a game doesnt get aaa doesnt mean its a bad game (i even had fun with n3 mock me if u must) but my point is i know games like blue dragon, lair, andmost likley alot of othersare not going to score aaa but that doesnt mean me and alot of other people cant enjoy them so whats the big?sinistamotivs
a game doesn't need to be AAA to be enjoyable. it just marks out the very best. a game with higher than 7 is a decent at least game.
They mean nothing! I play games I like and couldn't care less about some dudes opinion! Doesn't make the game any less fun for me. Fanboys use them for ownage and nothing more.Unholy_Smite
So if a game scored 2 or lower but was in a genre you liked you would buy it? Even if every review site said it was the biggest piece of trash ever? If you enjoy bad games I suppose this would make some sense.
Reviews should never be taken as the final word on a game but to think they do not give a good indication of the overall quality of a title is ridiculous. It seems to me that it is a new trend of 'oh yah, I don't like, you know, listen to other peoples opinions cause like, they aren't mine you know'.
short answer yes
long answer no ...
Basically if a game gets a horrible review from Gamespot, IGN and other sources than im unlikrly to buy it unless for some reason i really really want the game. an example is Enchanted Arms -- bad reviews but i wanted a JRPG so i got the game ...
Though when i look at review scores i couldn't care less that LoZ: TP got AA instead of AAA at gamespot ... or that Madden got AA when i think its should of gotten a 5 or 6 ... in the end i rate scores as - 8.0 - 10.0 "i should look into getting this game" ... 6.5 - 7.5 "if i like the genre, is the game worth getting" ... 5.0 to 6.5 "is the game worth it and why do people hate it"(prob. won't pay full price for the game at this score as well) ... less than 5.0 i usually decide the game isn't worth getting ... no matter what the price is ...

See, now that is more sensible. Demo's are a great way of checking out a game for yourself but they aren't always available. If I can't get to play a game before I buy it then I will sure as hell check out the reviews to get a feel for what others thought.
Opinions are like A-holes; everyone has one, they all stink but you need them to get through life.

Since when does a review mean the game is bad? Does that mean all games with low rating are bad with you? I don't judge based on a review, I rent and play then judge based on my views, not gamespots or any other.
Ive never cared about review scores or sales figures. I research games for myself and decide for myself the must have titles that i buy on launch day. Thenthere are themaybe's which get purchased within the first month of their release unless some huge flaw is noted upon by reviewers (but i could care less about the score), all i want to know is what the game is actually like not some random dudes grade out of 10 who most likely has totally different tastes then me.
I stoped caringabout reviews whenin late 2004 PaperMario on the Gamecube got the same score, 9.2as Half Life 2 on PC, i know people will respond by saying expectations on the gamecube arnt as high as PC but is this not why review scores are full of suchbs in the first place?
If review scores want to be credible then they must reflect video games in general not the hardware they appear on. What i mean is a game regardless of platform should have to go through the same review process with the same guidelines as every other game on every other platform. If all parties have the resources to release similar products but dont (for instance wii and the lack of next gen graphics as an example, or the lack of motion sensing capabilities with the 360) then all products released on those platforms should be judged the same (this prevents time from being an issue). With that said handheld games should have a different standard then console and PC games but that should be the ONLY exception.
In short, review scores only matter if the fashion in which the review is done is uniform accross the board. If a 9.2 on one system is the equivalent of a 9.6 on another system then how can review SCORES be credible? Esspecially when comparisson charts are nowhere to be found.
There is also ahuge factor which is impossible to review properly and it just happens to be the most important aspect about video games imo, and thats thepersonal fun factor.

Well i've actually extremely enjoyed the original Killzone (kill me, i don't give a **** :| ) and that got a 6.9... It's all about peoples tastes... I like apples, i rate them a 9 ... WHAT YOU HATE THEM!?

6.9 isn't a bad score, it just means you might want to look a little harder at the game before purchase. Whatever though, people are entitled to listen or not...I have found the scores in the past a fairly reliable way of finding games I enjoy.
You cannot look at a score alone though, it only goes in context with the review. Anyway i'm done for this thread, there is no more to say on the matter.

Technically I guess I thirst for ownage...but even that isn't quite true. I just love seeing people get their come-uppance. However, I don't think people who hype up games, or use a certain game to try and own others, gets turned off if the game gets a less than perfect score. Their mind is made up and they will probably buy and love the game regardless becuase that is what they have already made up their mind to do.
So really, I don't think someone truly gets "owned" by a lower game score. Never the less, it does chip away at their credibility and make them look bad, and it'snice to see Karma in action.
I live by reviews. I didn't play zelda tp because gamespot scored it 8.8, and I was expecting at least 9. I burned my copy after reading the review just to make sure nobody else stumbled across this flop and played it by accident. Its a shame too coz i was really enjoying the game too until I saw gamespots score, then i couldn't play on because i knew gamespot was right and i was wrong, this game was actually not as good as i thought it was.
Thank god for gamespot and their bias towards the wii, or i would have kept playing this flop.
