The media has constantly been pushing a narrative that Call Of Duty, specifically with control pads is a growing, thriving and legitimate competitive sport.

As an older gamer who played competitive Quake 3, extremely good, probably better than anyone on this forum, it's difficult to take this sentiment seriously.

Unarguably though, FPS, as a genre, has transitioned and is primarily a console centric genre now, as with RPG's. Unless it's a small miultiplayer focused game, chances are the game is being developed specifically with the Xbox at the forefront.

Is this just a belligerent attempt to cling on to the past, rooted in reality, or should consoles be taken seriously when it comes to FPS competitive gaming?

Cod is for noobs. You don't need skill to kill. You can camp and kill by shooting 3 bullets in the legs.On the other hand, halo needs skill to kill.Players don't die with a shot. You need to be precise and aim for the head.

Halo is highly competitive and difficult. I have seen people who do generally well in COD, get rapped in Halo.

As far as that video goes, I used to think I was competitive but seeing that makes me want to punch myself in the balls and quit gaming.

Rambunctiously speaking CounterStrike players and Call Of Duty players are one in the same, Counterstrike being very much the 90's equivalent of young antisocial teenagers angry with the world.

Mature players such as myself enjoyed games such as Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear, Age Of Empires, Quake 3. While titles such as Call Of Duty bring out the worst in humanity, these games created companionship through an unwritten code of respect as opposed to hyperactive squirrels fighting over a dangling nut.

These were the golden times of multiplayer, this has changed, the toxic community, dlc, micro-transactions that rustic time of brothers in arms ceases to exist, in its stead, social and corporate nihilism.

I don't, but it's only really because I'm not very good at multiplayer online games. I enjoy playing them, but I'm generally in the middle of the pack scoring wise.

If I was better, I'm sure I'd take it more serious though.

Competitive gaming is competitive gaming. Every genre you see as competitive in the very famous words of Liam Neson for Taken, "Requires a very particular set of skills." FPS require quick reflexes and teamwork to win a match. So yeah FPS as still competitive games.

Any games where if you were to get together with 3 of your buddies to form a team and then play against a professional team and lose 50-0 requires skill.

I think that consoles offer a great deal to the competitive gaming in the sense that the hardware and control input on all sides of a competition are on equal footing, with the only thing really setting people apart is their skills and strategy and teamwork and such, you know, the real stuff that competitiveness should be based on.

Sure, I know PC elitist love to say how much better the precision of a mouse is over a controller, and I don't doubt that. But, by playing with a controller against others that won't be using a mouse, you might lack the advantage of a mouse but so does everyone else. And, playing with a controller really isn't that horrible.

The fact Auto aim is needed makes me not even give two shits about these console FPS games. How can you call this skill when you literally can have the Auto aim do all sorts of shit, and often times in COD games kill someone even when not aiming anywhere near them.

Not even many PC FPS require that much skill.

Counter Strike is reflex....TF2 is ok.

UT2K4 and Tribes 2.....those required actual skill b/c they had depth. They don't make them like that anymore.

Not really, I like watching certain Halo players because they are entertaining like Flamesword is a lot of fun to watch. But I've never been big on watching MLG even for Halo, I hated that playlist in Halo 3, and I don't like Call of Duty. I like Gears of War multiplayer enough to recognize it's a well made game and I see value in it as a competitive shooter on a gamepad, because everything about it lends itself great to gamepad play.

However if I was going to watch an "e-sport" FPS just isn't the genre I'm into, because it's harder to convey and keep interesting, because you're missing so much of the information with these team by team games focusing on one player at a time approach. It's not like an actual sport where you are watching the whole field more or less. It's an advantage fighting games have by being purely 1 v 1, and frankly the depth there is on another level in comparison to even something as good as Unreal or Tribes, so get real.

Otherwise I can watch competitive Starcraft 2, that's a ton of fun to watch. I'm mixed on Dota 2, but I think they have a great way to present that game to make sure you know more of what is going on, and Valve has done a great job of keeping the presentation in check.

Now do I think the E-sport scene needs changes? **** yes

For starters
-Real names, not fucking gamertags. If you want it to be taken seriously, take it fucking seriously. Use the fucking name your mother gave you. Don't give me some "gaming culture" bullshit, it's dumb. Pistola is a cool name though

-The overdone announcers need to dial it the **** back. Gus Johnson (in the NFL) is fun to listen to, but he makes sure he keeps that shit in check, plus play by play? Is not meant to be hyped 24 fucking seven. More to it, WHY IN THE **** do the announcers have nicknames? Also if you give yourself your own nickname (gamertag), it doesn't fucking count.

There is other shit, but those 2 bug me the most. The NFL can throw a thousand commercials your way, but it can do that because for the most part their announcers are reasonably good at their job. Ditto for the NBA. Ditto for the NHL. Ditto for MLB. Ditto for Fifa. MLG? Evo? Any E-sport even that isn't Dota 2 lately? **** no, the announcers are terrible. What they are doing is not presenting your game in a quality light, but commencing ear rape. I like my ears.

I come from games such as Unreal Tournament '99 and Quake 3 Arena, so taking console FPS seriously is quite hard. Gamepad and auto-aim doesn't help. But sure, as long as it's the same for everyone, it can still be competitive. You CAN be the best with a gamepad and auto-aim. But that's not something I want to spend time on, personally. Being the best at a PC FPS is about 1000 times more fun.

Quake 3 was easy as F. Some cheap headphones was already enough to know were to shoot.

I never take the competitive matches serious, not for pc and not for consoles.
