Do you think casual consumers are actually going to spend $400 for a Wii clone?

Brand recognition is HUGE. The Wii already broke the barrier, and is CHEAP. Why would a casual consumer pay double for a clone? Because it has "purdy graffix" and is "uber accurate"? I don't think so. Casual consumers, which includes parents, grandparents, non-gamers, etc. like to pay the least amount for the same product. The Wii is already cheap and has been out since 2006. What in God's name makes anyone think that the PlayStation Move even has a lick of a chance at becoming a successful product? I see it selling no more than the PSPGo, because even the hardcore cows are sick of it.

Oh, and don't forget the ugly character models for the shovelware:

To be honest, I think it's only to diversify their lineup. Just like Natal will be with the 360. Both of the HD consoles won't be relying on motion control to sell their console like the Wii does. I doubt anyone is going to run out to buy a PS3 just for motion control but rather it gives the consumer options. Especially the mothers who may see now and in the future that there are casual friendly titles on the PS3 that their family can play.

As mirrorman said, that's only if they already own a PS3. The whole point of Sony doing this is to attract the casual crowd... hell, it was the first thing they said at the GDC. It is their whole "thesis" to this shameless clone. They are going to horribly fail at fulfilling that goal because their product does not have a regular consumer-based pricepoint, especially in a worldwide recession. The people buying the Wii are doing so because it is the cheapest alternative gaming system and does something different. The PlayStation Move is going to copy that, and be a more expensive alternative. Somebody at Sony Computer Entertainment's accounting department failed to understand that we are in an age in which people want to save money for their entertainment, which is not essential to life.

I don't think a lot of people are going to buy it. I have a Wii and a PS3. I don't need to buy motion control for my PS3 also. That would feel like a waste of money. They're only doing it because the PS3 is not going to sell a lot more units. With the economy the way it is, and the fact that a lot of Playstation's local gamers are still making the switch from PS2 to PS3, they can't afford to make a PS4 anytime soon. That would put them on the path to bankruptcy. They are pretty much done selling systems for now. Granted there will still be plenty of people that buy it, but not huge truckloads. People simply can't afford it. The PS3 move is basically just way to stretch their earnings for the system as far as possible to the loyal fanbase that already owns a PS3.

No, but no one is going to think of it as spending $400. They're going to think of the Move bundle as a game or accessory, and in my experience virtually no one takes the price of a game and/or accessories into account (ie even though the cost of entry for a 360 Elite is potentially north of $400 with a game, Wi-Fi and XBL, the vast majority of consumers will still think of it as spending $300 on a 360).

I don't think what I said is limited to just households who already own a Playstation 3. The casual crowd will be looking around the holiday for something for everyone, which could very well be the Playstation 3, if they get their act together with this motion technology. Like I said, no one is going out of their way to buy it solely for motion technology but it gives options. The Playstation 3 already has a great line up, blu-ray, and is a decent medium for all things media. Add motion technology with that and it "could" be worth expense. We won't know till we see some numbers after. I'm just saying that it'll give more incentive to weigh their options if they are going to make the purchase post-Move. Whether that falls through is up to Sony and the consumer.

The ps3 isn't always going to be $300 and there is a huge pool of casuals to reach over the next 5 years or so for the system. (both who own the system and don't own one yet)

1. The ps3 move is actually a 3d simulation, goes far beyond the boundries of the Wii mote, better in every way, plus hey it looks sexy;)
2. Its only 100 bucks....................................................................................

If casuals wanted HD graphics with a Blu-Ray player they would of bought it long ago. The added Move wont move them away from the cheaper system that has the games that they wanted since day one and a large libary that already caters to motion controls, and that is the Wii.

It will be a foot in the door ready for next gen. Until then I think it will really show up the Wii in terms of potential, with some great experiences that can't be achieved on the Wii. Although if the PS3 lasts another 5 years and the price keeps dropping, then who knows.

Far beyond? No... Name a single game they showed that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Move is "far beyond" the capabilities of the Wii.

For all we know it can be priced at 98.99+ (:P) but then, in order to use it, you need to purchase a PS3. Oh and if Sony was to drop the price of the PS3, what stopping Nintendo from doing the same? Nintendo can take a hit right now, Sony cant.

I think people focus too much on how the Move Wand will do greater things than Motion Plus. Its the PS3's processing and graphical advantages that will define the potential of the games.

Well theoretically if a gamer doesn't wanna give up their motion games but also wants to to have solid quality standard controlled games then the PS3 would be the natural evolution. The price will reduce and eventually people may want to move on from their Wii. I mean especially if Sony and MS manage to do something deep with these controls unlike the Wii. It is very possible that this generation may have a higher concentration of multiple console owners unlike last time and gamers who have been playing the Wii may want to go to the next level with higher quality first party exclusives, HD and 3D graphics.

I think PS3 owners will definitely be willing to drop $100 for Move. Now whether it can push consoles is a whole different story.

If a family gaming with moco is what somebody is looking for I doubt they would pass on the Wii with WSR, Fit+, and NSMB still creating a buzz, and with SMG 2, Metroid Other M, and Zelda Wii on the way.

Do you really think that the core audience of the Wii cares about HD visuals and fast processors because that is what Sony is going after. They are going after the single console gamer who would rather play a game that requires simple gestures or a few buttons to play and most of them already bought their console of choice. These "casual" gamers are not going to rush out to pick up a PS3 just because it looks better than the Wii. I have said it before. This is simply a test run for Sony on perfecting the technology for the PS3 successor which will like have all the motion controls packed into the retail box.

I think there's a lot of Wii owners that wish it was more powerful. No I don't think anyone will ''rush out'' to get a PS3 now, a flower takes time to grow.

They paid $400 for a Wii with WiiFit... and they also paid several hundred dollars over sticker on internet auctions to get one in the beginning.

I really believe some people would get the PS3 because of Move, I mean my little cousin has the wii and never touches it unless someone else turns it on and then he HAS to play, there are millions of kids with the same syndrome, this is obviously because of the awful library they have due to the lack of good titles on the wii combined with the bad taste or ignorance their parents have when they pick games. When I was a kid we went crazy with a NES and all titles there were casual pick and play games, but they were of very superior quality, if this supposedly "good" motion sensing device was integrated with a system with a real library and THIRD PARTY SUPPORT, it would become really attractive for the casual crowd, and we have to take into consideration that a vast proportion of the casual crowd are teen minded adults who do care about the HD factor

Yeah, but the console releash rush can't really be compared to anything else. Move isn't going to see that kind of pre-release hype, or moms that desperate to get their child the Move before Christmas. And people were willing to spend so much for WiiFit because people saw a practical and popular goal (lose weight) packaged in a new way (video game) with an already established name (Wii-craze mode was still in full effect when it was released) with no other competition. Move won't have the same open market to jump into, obviously.

Maybe they'll spend $300, since that's what a PS3 costs now. 8)
