I was just thinking about games that didn't get the score they deserved (I won't say what), and games that got really high scores that didn't deserve it (I won't say what again). Then I thought, "Does hype have to do with it?" Maybe GS doesn't feel a game deserves AAA if it wasn't hyped enough or even they weren't excited enough for a game to realize how good it actually was?Or they feel they couldn't give a game AA because so many people were hyping it, so they give it AAA. Or maybe they were just sooo hyped, it blinded them to how bad a game actually was?

Basically, I think that each good looking game needs a little bit of hype (for example, Silent Hill Shattered Memories), but doesn't need too much (for example, Uncharted 2), because it can play a big role from what score a game deserves, to what it doesn't.

So what do you think!

Not necessarily if you count personal hype.

Absolutely yes. Its not like it really matters though, I'm a far tougher critic then most reviewers and I slam games for errors and mistakes because sucking up to every great experience doesn't do anything for games as a whole. If something has a lot of hype, its less likely to truly flop (not thisdumb bull*** A, AA, AAA stuff) because reviewers are at the mercyy of publishers and fanboys, (like the vast majority of SW) don't want the truth, they want high scores so they can brag about them and be happy.

"The game has framerate issues" lies!!!
"The game has glitches" I didn't see any glitches1!11!111
"The game was mediocore" in there opinion 1!!!!

Game Reviewer: Fine Let me Stroke your ego, the game has problem but f that, I'm giving it a 9
SW: Thank you reviewer, thanks to you I have another piece of ammo in my System Warrior battle. Who cares hat the text says.

Yes in a lot of cases it does play a factor like GTAIV for example. It first leaked out with a 9.5 but was pulled and replaced with a 10 so I'm sure the overwhelming hype played a role in that somehow.

On Gamespot, absolutely.

I've seen some games get very undesered scores, and I couldn't fnd any reason other than the hype and the reviewer's bias that the game would score so high

I think that it does play a small role on it, for instance there're some games that I think scored higher than they should because of the hype like infamous and prototype, not flaming them or anything I actually liked those games (I liked infamous better) but I didnt think that inf deserved a 9 (too repetitive) or prototype an 8.5 (too many technical issues), maybe .5 less on each one and I would agree with them. On the other side there are games that have been destroyed with hideous scores because of the hype that surrounded them like Too Human ( tricky controls and unfilled potential but very serviceable game), Mercenaries 2 (not near the quality of the first mercs but a fairly solid game not a 5) or even Haze (which I admit was kinda crappy but the score was very severe)..

I think hype and reputation has a lot to do with it.

Gamers far and wide come to these near unanimous agreements that certain games don't deserve a score, but judging by what the game is it's obvious if the reviewer didn't give it a great score the credibility for that site would be lost.

Certain games this gen alone fall into that category.

Could be payouts too. I honestly wouldn't be surprised by that either.

Hype also. I'm sure some people are so excited for a game that when they get it they think it's the 2nd coming, and rate it as such.

I never take reviews seriously anyways. Far too many times I don't understand what the reviewer is even talking about because the review doesn't match the score it gets.

It depends. I've seen games I've never heard of, much less cared about get high scores (around the 7-9 range). But games that were hyped to be the next digital messiah get a mere 4-6 score. I guess if a game caught someone by suprise, it would score really high, than a game that failed to deliver on innovations.

Of course hype affects it. Sometimes I think that if you took a game exactly like it, but not hyped, it would fail compared to the hyped one
