Do you think MS is losing out by not having its own portable gaming console?

I doubt we'll see an M.S. handheld. They'll probably just put M.S. games on the D.S. They respect Nintendo enough to know that they wouldn't stand a chance against them in the handheld market. Gameboy has practically become a household name for handhelds.

Consoles are one thing, but the handheld market is almost impossible to crack, Sony was looking pretty grim for awhile with the PSP, but now it seems to be hitting it's stride. Not to mention Nintendo who has always dominated the market, and by now it's too late to be releasing a portable when the competition has already had a three year head start. If anything we'll have to wait till the current portables die off and the new ones are being introduced for Microsoft to make a move at all.

TO an extent, they are in the handheld market. Many games out there are Windows Mobile exclusive. However, in terms of hardware, they are probably afraid to lose $$$ as experience shows that they lost a lot on Xbox when they penetrated the console market. If they do make a portable gaming device, it'll probably be called 'Xcase', case being a small box :P

I have high hopes for sony's next handheld.. though it probably be a ways off.

2x analog

touch screen (even though I enjoy classic interface more)

internal HDD or SSD that can hold 10G+

integrated AT&T cell phone and Internet ability

with that, full Internet browser that supports most plug-ins

basically smash a i-phone and psp together :P

Expect something veeeery cheap from sony's next handheld, Nintendo Proved that cheaper outdated hardware = Faster sales.

I'd be surprised if the PsP2 is priced above 180$ at launch.

It was hard enoug to compete with Nintendo./

but now the PSP has made a name for itself.

Honestly MS handheld would probably be lackluster

I think MS should start looking at Games for WIndows as there"handheld" like project.

i mean shift some focus to PC gaming as well.

Why can't it be done exactly? Xbox and Xbox 360 bombed in Japan also you know. Why is it ok for a console to bomb in Japan, but not for a handheld?

because Handhelds do better in Japn then they do in U.S. or Europe

where as the U.S. and Europe the consoles are a bigger market for the most part.

Also it isn't like the 360 is lighting up the sales charts.......the 360 has the advantage of the superior software over the competitors(or atleast more software)

that is an advantage the XBOX handheld won't have because Sony and Nintendo will get the bulk of the support.

DS and PSP have sold better in America and Europe than Japan, at least according to Vgchartz. I know Vgchartz is not the epitomy of accurate info.

1- its not even close to accurate
2- Where as the consoles actually are in shouting distance of those handheld sales, they are SO FAR away from the DS and PSP in sales each month. I mean Wii is probably the only one doing good in Japan.

Aside from the sales asepcts

Its just not in MSs best interest to do a handheld. They would easily recreate an N-Gage.

Although GfW (on MS' side) is a start, it's no match yet for Steam, let alone Xfire.

While Sony and Nintendo will not be able to catch up to GfW, I doubt GfW will ever be Steam caliber.

Microsoft has already taken the best option available for them with the Zune. Competing against Apple in another demographic and eventually offering short casual games will get their foot in the door. Eventually.

Well, no I don't really think MS is losing out. A portable console would cost them hundreds of millions to develop, market, etc and really there is a high risk that they won't get a decent penetration into the handheld market. Nintendo has dominated and is dominating. Sony has managed to get in, hit it's stride, and do reasonably because playstation itself is a household name, and when the psp was initially released, the ps2 was dominating. For Microsoft, the potential risk outweighs any benefits they would see.

They could... but I think for them its like whats the point. The PSP is doing ok-ish. I mean, you could make a valid argument that, with the DS having like 180 million units sold or something crazy like, everyone who wanted a DS pretty much has it and the only folk left are people like me, really slow to pick up a handheld. I think I bought a GBA like less than a year before the DS came out. And it wasn't even the redesigned GBA, its was a the old ones that were super wide.

How much did Sony invest in the PSP? Have they actually made a profit from it? Is it a profit even worth mentioning in the grand scheme of what their company pulls in each year? I think MS is of the opinion that Windows CE or Mobile or whatever it is now, that is there handheld. They are approaching it the same as they do regular computers: making hardware is too much of a risk and involves too much money. You're better off just doing software or an OS.

If consoles were an open system like a PC, I think they never would have made the xbox. They would have sold a video game centric OS for consoles.

Well if they did join the handheld market, it would definitely raise the bar. I'm not saying that the X360 handheld would be better, but it will make competitors respond to the new hardware and try to come up with new features that will benefit over the competitor.

I highly doubt the PS3 would be a PS3 if Xbox and Xbox 360 wasnt in the race.

After 2 generations(like the 360 after the Xbox), they might. All they need to do is get Halo multiplayer with Wi-Fi and they're golden.

Who knows, they might be working on a portable system that has graphics that are between the Xbox 1 and Xbox 360, something that people would really be attracted to.

nope, psp and ds have the market cornered. MS don't have the right fanbase to follow a portable xbox.

PSP worked because many have a ps2, and psp is the portable ps2. + its cheap

DSL worked because of gameboy, and that its a shovel ware kiddy console like the wii ( i have one despite this ) + its cheap

Now i'd love to see one thing from portables and thats a full online service, if the mobile internet could be pimp'd up by MS and there was a new handheld a little bigger than the iphone and super-high quality graphics, downloadable games instead of discs to improve load times and xbox live portable, then we could see handheld gaming reach its eutopia, unfortunately it'd have to be around £100 for people to buy it *sigh* maybe in the next decade.

M$ already supports the DS in small ways with Rare, other than that I think they're doing well as it is -- they already support the PC in place of a handheld.
