Do you think multiplayer has lost some of it's novelty?

OK so when the generation began, all I was thinking about was multiplayer and xbox live that type of thing. But now 6-7 years later I truly have lukewarm feelings about multiplayer. However, I do enjoy co-op more than your average vs multiplayer. But, I've learned to value a good single player game. When I get online. unless I'm playing on the PC I feel like online multiplayer is just stale and stagnant. No one is communicating unless it's some kid screaming in the mic. Even on a lot of PC games I've played no one is really communicating that much. Basically my point is without communication multiplayer feels like modified single player that repeats itself every round. Agree? Disagree?

Im over crappy multiplayer modes or gimmick multiplayer modes. There are still plenty of great multiplayer games. Right now BF3 and Halo 4 are about the only multiplayer games that keep me interested

Yea, about that. I don't have any gamer friends. All of my friends are into other things besides gaming. To be honest, I like that about them because gamers in real life are kind of degenerates. LOL

when everyone is trying to shove mp in their games....yes. When you look at sp games which sell millions... you would think that would be a sign to publishers that you dont need mp to sell well...

Pretty much sums it up for me. I have too many quality SP games to get through to make time for MP, which I haven't played since some recent split screen Halo 4.

Multiplayer is my favorite thing about gaming.

I've put nearly 24 hours into Civ V multiplayer in the last two days o_O

In the last week I have also completed Kotor (19 hours), and have played around 14 hours of Morrowind, but still.

I have poured thousands of hours into multiplayer gaming whereas even my most favoritest single player games of all time I've only ever beaten maybe 10-15 times (each), and most of them don't last all that long to begin with.

Somewhat, while I enjoy games like TF2 and PS2 from time to time they just can't match the epic singleplayer campaigns of other games.

Not at all, just depends on how it's done. Even though I'm sick of the FPS multiplayer scene, I love playing a good game of Dota with a good team.

MMOs did in recent years. It used to be all about the community and group activities. Social features didn't exist. Now it's the exact opposite and it seems rarely anyone ever wants to communicate or do anything anymore.

I think the main reason is that many companies are focusing more and more on tacked on multiplayer rather than creating quality multiplayer games.

I hate it when games are punished by critics for not having MP, some games are just better as SP focused games, give a game crap if it has truly great MP potential that's never explored, otherwise if it doesn't need it then don't bother mentioning it. I'd rather developers focus on SP and not waste time worrying about tacking on MP if it's not going to help the game. That takes time, money, manpower, worse yet is when games go through a beta phase, I mean it was cool the first few times games did this when they were games people actually wanted, but sometimes it has the ability to completely turn people off of a game who might have otherwise been looking forward to it.

I only buy one or two FPS/mp-centric games a year so it always baffles me when I see people complaining that there's too many of them.

I always wonder what the hell these people are doing that makes them think that there is a saturation of X-type games when I see a ton of variety of games come out every year.

It's simple man, if you don't like the mp then don't play it.

One thing I learned is that, try not to get involve your feelings. Just like when someone trash talks you, you will end up"hurt" and cry in the corner and say "why are they like that!" It's one of there ways to keep you out of your "A" game. They also do that because they know that they can bully anyone and they know that they won't get any physical counter attack. I guess that is just how it goes "online actions are not rated"

MP is great for games where mp makes sense.

Now they use MP as a form of DRM.

See Mass Effect 3.

I spend most of my time single-player, and only mp occaisionally.

I think competetive MP games have matured and are now getting more polished (as opposed to being novel) - games like DotA 2, LoL, Starcraft 2 offer extremely polished and balanced multiplayer experience.

On the other hand there still isnt enough good coop MP games - or to put it more precisely there is desperate lack of innovation in coop MP gaming. The Souls Games did many things right, but other than that all you get basically are splitscreen/online coop shooters, and very few of them are actually good. To be good coop game, you must be designed as one from the start (games that did that right are the Army of Two games, Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5, but thats about it).

In other words - competetive MP games feel like they lost some of their novelty and turned into extremely polished and balanced experience, while coop MP games desperately need some novelty, because there is tons of untapped potential in this concept.

There are good multiplayer games, but only a few of them. So, when pretty much evrey game has some kind of multiplayer, it's going to seem like MP sucks because it largely does.

I love online multiplayer campaign mode. Never really cared for the capture the flag or most kills since Quake on the SNES. I was born in the 70's so I was used to pinball, Donkey Kong, TSR80, and PAC-MAN. Until Halo 2 online multiplayer was virtually nil. In my oh so humble opinion I believe that the resources needed for all the online multiplayer and customization stuff takes away from story mode.

it never had any for me, Don't play online and i am too old in the tooth to start now, played Halo3 and Battlefild 2 online for a few hours and found it boring, i need the immersion of single player, Proper story, proper mission objectives, not just running around blasting people and listening to Abusive teenagers with there 'your mom' routine

I've never been much of a fan of online mp in the first place. Much prefer local. The only exception for me is RTS games I guess. Used to play things like Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena a fair bit but just got bored of MP first person shooters.

Began? I've been playing games online since the mid-late 90s, and there's a good deal of people who were playing network games in their infancy. Hasn't worn off, and that's coming from someone who generally plays public servers casually, and sometimes with friends. Still love a game of Counter Strike in the evening, even going back to play BF1942 or Quake is a hoot, to more recent games like Planetside 2 or console games like Warhawk - game is still a blast. Oh and Natural Selection 2. Holy **** it's a good game, like the excellent mod original only with fantastic production values and polish, as well as some great players and a good community. Red Orchestra 2 is great fun as well. I'm surprised how engaging online multiplayer still is.

Agree? Disagree?

blackgamer1213

You must be using psn then, it's free and you get what you pay for. For a real online experience you need XBOX LIVE or a PC

Never had much interest in multiplayer to begin with. Assassin's Creed was the only multiplayer I ever had fun with and even that I didn't play that much of.

Online multiplayer has never done anything for me. I prefer to sit at home seething and crying about how horribly lonely I am...alone. That and the fact that almost every game has some form of multi-player now...even if it doesn't need it. Seriously though? I still get a kick out of local co-op in games like Shank.
