Poll Do you think Nintendo will ever outsell Sony/Microsoft in a future console? (49 votes)
I don’t think it can be done.
I don’t think it can be done.
No, their exclusivity and business practices are limiting, while their appeal is also limited.
Those are not necessarily negatives, but I do think they are obstacles if they ever want to sell more units.
Obviously just my opinion.
Nintendo is over consoles now. Turning away from that hybrid market would be a mistake. Hell, trying to control the console market now isn't an issue of profitability anymore, but how much a platform holder is ready to spend to win
It is possible that a future Nintendo console will outsell its competitors, but does it really matter for most gamers? After all, unlike the denizens of System Wars, most gamers care less about sales wars and buy and play want interest them the most.
Why not? THey focus on gimmicks 100% of the time. Gimmicks is what attracts the average normie and children. Now, if the question is: Will they ever make a game that is better than what's available on ps or xbox, the clear answer would be a massive no.
One hardware, sure, or at least they are right now. On software, I dunno. Nintendo makes good high selling first party games but they're hardly my primary consideration for third party multiplats. As far as future Nintendo hardware goes, we'll have to see. If they stick to Switch design and beef it up, or if they pivot to something new but risky, there's really no saying with Nintendo. I don't think they're in any rush to replace the Switch though.
I said yes because Nintendo always seems to find a way and they have a LOT of brand recognition. If they make a Switch 2 or 3 and it can play pretty much and 3rd party game and if they partner with someone like Steam or get more access to PC games (which I actually think next gen consoles will all have) then it is very possible. Especially if while docked it can compete with last/current gen consoles now. It would be a Nintendo/Steam like device all in one and would be a win/win.
They have already outsold the PS5 and Xbox Series for this gen. And the Wii has outsold the 360 and PS3. I have no doubt that Nintendo could also win gen 10, whenever that starts.
Nah, but this might be the second to last generation where consoles really still matter. They both are moving toward a more ubiquitous distribution model to maximize their customer base and that cannot be done by restricting your software to a single platform.
They’ve done it twice in the last 3 generations… Odds are it will happen again
Are you certain about that? That would mean that the Wii U outsold Microsoft or Sony, which I sincerely doubt. And if this website is anything to go by, if we're talking lifetime sales, the PS2 is still king, followed by the Nintendo DS.

Wii outsold 360/PS3
PS4/Xbox One outsold Wii U
Switch will outsell Xbox Series/PS5
That is 2/3
@x_hedon: Do you have a source I can check that out? Are we talking globally or locally for outperforming? I don't care either way who "won" a generation, but am curious about the numbers. :)
@hardwenzen: Those attributes are not indicative of what “normies” go for, normie. Your standard dude bro games and consoles are for normies. Although, I think all consoles have innovative games.
@mesome713: Nintendo is showing 111 million units sold, but others sources are all saying that the PS4 holds the spot globally with 117 million, though Nintendo Switch outsold it in the US. :/
Edit: Thank you for a link! :D

Ah, that is why you are mistaken. Switch is gen 9 with Xbox Series and PS5. Wii U was gen 9 with Xbox One and PS4. The Xbox One and PS4 beat Wii U in gen 8. Wii was gen 7 with 360 and PS3 and beat them both.
Switch is at 111 million right now. They anticipate it being close to PS2 numbers by the time it is said and done. PS5 and Xbox Series will never match the Switch numbers.
Xbox easily has nintendo is more completion than xbox because unlike xbox they make good games. Also switch will pass ps4 pretty soon being its only like 7 million behind ps4 and ps4 is basically not being sold any more. Because of when Wii U and switch came out the release are not lined up that much any more. I mean Wii U came out in 2012 like a year before ps4 so not that bad not to different than gamecube and xbox being out 1 year later than ps2 but because of the flop that was the Wii U and its short life time has now made release not lined up while at all. I mean switch came out in 2017 4 years after xbox one and ps4 and 3 years before ps5 and xbox sx. If switch 2 comes out next year that would be 3 years after ps5 and xbox sx and even if its 2024 that would likely be 2+ years before we get ps6 and what ever the next xbox is.

I think its way way to soon to say switch will out sale ps5 it very well could out sale ps5 and heck even ps2 considering its sales have not slowed down that much still and with botw 2 being out next year that is only going to boost sales more and keep it from failing of for longer but I also think ps5 will out sale ps4 but its hard to say has long has we have shortage issues.

With a miracle, the Xbox Series/PS5 could outsell the Switch, yes. But media and analysts have already given the Switch the race based on how it's selling.

Goodness me. Lol. Thank you for the clarification! :D
@x_hedon: they switch is the same gen as wii u. Wii u lasted less than a gen. Switch came out to hide wii u like it didn't happen. Switch is like ps4 pro of Xbox one x. Switch was not made by Nintendo to compete with ps5 and series x but against ps4 and Xbox one. New Switch is coming in a year or so does that mean sale wise it's not competing against ps5 but the ps6 which is like 8 years away. Makes no sense.

Lol no 😂 Nintendo even confirmed it was gen 9. This gen is Switch vs Xbox Series vs PlayStation 5. Wii U was gen 8.
Tbh, I dont think they can replicate the Switches success again because of the Steam Deck
Yes, their 1st party titles do sell consoles but they're not enough reason for why the Switch has the success that it has. Switch sold plenty because of AAA gaming on the go. It was a practical console and nowadays, with people busy away from home a console that can do that was a good idea. Steam Deck however, stole much of its appeal when you can play many cheap indie and AAA games on the go aswell. Yes, you dont have Nintendo exclusives but you have so, so much more

I hope I am wrong, but I don't see Steam Deck lasting more than say 2 years.
I think it's sort of likely that Nintendo is the only company that puts out consoles after this gen. It's only a matter of time before all smart tvs, roku, etc. carry Game Pass and PS+/Now or whatever Sony is calling it, and it sort of defeats the purpose of trying to sell a console if the consumer can simply subscribe instead. Enthusiasts who want to own games will still be able to do that on the PC, and I'm sure games not on services will be sold to stream, just like movies are. Nintendo will still sell consoles, given their history of never adapting to what the rest of the industry is doing, and they will probably make a good go of it for awhile.
They've already outsold Xbox.
On their way to outselling the PS4 as well. Nintendo Switch already at 111.8 million while the PS4 stopped counting at 117.2 million. Nintendo Switch will outsell the PS4 come holiday season.

Wrong gen.
Considering they have already done it with the Wii and the Switch, I do not see why it can't happen again.
