No, I'm not making it a poll.
I just want to see how many of you see that it's a new game vs how many of you are wrong. It's clearly a new game for many reasons, so that's my take. What's yours?

i think there will be some sort of connection to smash 4. the fire logo is very telling.
the question is to what extent is new and what extent is old. if it has new character designs. new artstyle, and new moves for everyone but has the same physics as smash 4. then i could consider it a new game.
since brawl to 4 was just a bit of tweaking as well anyway.
Port of Wii U with additional content..I doubt its a new game - with new mechanics & new moves for the fighters...time will tell though. :P
I really don't care to be honest, I'll get it either way. But IF it is a port, I really hope they combine the content from the 3DS and WiiU versions and add some more content on top of it (like Inkling and BotW Link we saw in the trailer).
Also, do you remember Project Red stating that Gerald will be in another game? Gamespot back then thought it might be Sould Calibur. But maybe he's in smash?
Edit: Article: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-witchers-geralt-will-cameo-in-another-game-rel/1100-6457180/
I think it'll be a "new" game that carries over most of the assets/DLC from Smash 4 on Wii U/3DS, adds/trades out a few new characters, and then puts in a new campaign mode or something. Then it will proceed as something of a GAAS, with new content added over a year or two. Essentially the Splatoon 2 model.
I don't see why it must be a new game when the 4th installment happened really not that long ago. If it's the same game as the Wii U/3DS games + a sizable expansion (new characters, stages, game modes, collectibles, etc.), I'm happy.
It was on WiiU, so probably port. Not that you'd notice.
It is a port of the Wii U game with additional content.

LMAO
I don't care that much. If it's Smash 4 with lots of added content, I'd be pretty happy. If it's completely new with new moves, characters, items, stages and whatnot, I'd be excited but slightly worried they'd **** up Smash Bros. Never played Smash 64, but Smash Bros Melee was awesome, Brawl was way worse, Smash 4 was better than Brawl but worse than Melee.. Let's hope for the best.
But I hope it's new. New is fun..
A different dev is making the upcoming Smash game.
Bandai Namco developed Smash 4.
HAL Labarotory is developing the upcoming Smash game for the Switch.
It's abundantly clear that it is a new game.
Feel free to stay salty and argue with facts Cows and Lems.
Every port so far has thus been announced as one when first revealed. No reason why they would be coy with Smash Bros. Especially when such an announcement later in the year would be a huge disappointment.
I believe it's a new game. I would love them to change up the art style for this one. I'm not big into Smash anyways. Gets boring after awhile.
I definitely don’t think that it’s a port, not that that would bother me though. At the least I think that it may be a Smash Bros. 4.5.
I agree with everyone here. Which is to say my mind is all over the place. The thing is that... the creator basically said he wouldn't be able to do another one of those because it took too much out of him. Yet he is apparently involved in this one again. Maybe they found a way to make things a little easier on him.
I don't care about smash bros, but
Is there a difference?
All fighting game sequels are basically just ports.
Nope.
@KungfuKitten: I do believe it's a new game, it could be the same engine as the Wii U, but upgraded to change between dock and handheld. So far, I believe Samurai has taken in some young talent from HAL and is helping them to create the fame. I feel Sakurai is planning on retirement after this version of Smash and leave the franchise to the new talent.
@ArchoNils2: The article says Geralt so why do you call him Gerald?
I added the article after my post and really, I didn't pay attention to his name

Oh please, every game dev says this crap. How many times did Kojima say this after a metal gear release? He literally had to be FIRED to stop working on the series.
Seems like a port with additions like several of the other Wii u to switch games.
Pretty sure if it was an entirely brand new entry they would have used the opportunity to make that abundantly clear or since then would have come out and clarified as so.
Since neither of those things have happened, I'm assuming it's a port and Nintendo would rather avoid saying so for as long as possible to avoid any bad publicity that would come along with that.
Was this thread OP a jab at me? Wierd that you still are asking a question, i'm starting to inspire you. It's okay, i like that.

It is abundantly clear that it's a new game; people are just acting like it isn't because it's hard to comprehend a new game coming "so soon" for some reason. It's 100% a new game, though. It might use the same engine, but since it's not even the same developer even that isn't 100%. There is literally nothing to indicate that it's a port, but people think it's a port just due to all of the other ports.
@techhog89: different developers handle ports all the time, I wouldn't really look to that as evidence of a new game.
It is a glorified Wii U/3DS port.
It is so damn obvious yet you want to dismiss it.
Your opinion doesn't matter because you're a parody and probably call Splatoon 2 a port.

No. It's to create a wall of shame once the game is fully revealed.

While true, the original developer is always credited in cases like that. There's no mention of Bandai Namco or Sora Ltd. anywhere; it's just HAL. I don't think it would even be legal to not credit them at all, and I really don't think that HAL would be the one porting it over some smaller team at BN. And why bother changing the logo? Or removing all mention of the other games from their site?
Let me put it another way. You logic on why it's a port is that they haven't come out and explicitly called it a new game. Thus, my counterpoint is that it's not a port because it hasn't been explicitly called one. Nintendo hasn't tried to hide the fact that any of their other games are ports, so why start now? In fact, it's a port, they're going out of their way to deceive us into believing it may be a new game. Trust me, it's Smash 5. It might only be a Splatoon 2 kind of sequel, where it's a new game but clearly built on the previous one, but it's definitely not Smash 4. I also don't know why they wouldn't have released the port last year unless Smash 4 is genuinely the final Smash game.
I expect it to use the same engine and be nearly graphically identical to the WiiU version.
Hoping they took the past few years since Smash 4 to create a story mode that will be included in this game.
Also that the online is finally good.

I only state facts.
Splatoon 2 is also a port. Fact. Deal with it.

Sakurai did that PLENTY with 4.

Was just about to say. I don't remember Street Fighter IV being yet another port of Street Fighter II or Tekken 7 being a port of Tekken 6.
@nintendoboy16: Smash 4 is the best Smash. It just really misses a story mode. Gameplay wise it’s the best though. Great roster variety with excellent new additions like Mega Man, less duplicates, tighest controls since Melee (Brawl was too floaty) and a good balance.
the reveal gave us nothing.
the wiiu game was 15.6 GB in size so if they wanted to take the wiiu game and add loads of stuff to it..well....they will need a bigger cart. there is a 32GB cart available for the switch so maybe nintendo will go down that route.
using the wiiu game as a base and building on it would make a lot of sense. they dont need to go back and redo all the assets and such like from the wiiu version. there would be no point. porting it would be straight forward. so using that as a foundation and heaving even more madness on top of it would make for quite a sizeable game. and when i say heap more on i mean fill the 32GB cart with more stages, more characters, more easter eggs, more everything. maybe change the SP structure also so its all mixes up in a new way. rebalance all the characters (brawl and smash wiiu are still not as nice to play as melee imho).
so it could be a port thats not really a port. it would use the same engine and a lot of the same assets as the wii U version. but it would also have a ton of its own assets and content. like an expansion pack that just completely overhauls the game (even changes the front end UI).
maybe....thats makes the most sense to me anyway. but maybe they are making a brand new smash from the ground up for switch. hard to call.
I said this in the other discussion about this a while back, but I'm curious what the people claiming it is a port
1) actually know about the game to make this claim and
2) would need to see from an iterative fighting series for it to NOT be called a "port"
@techhog89: it could be a "new" game I'm not saying it definitely isn't.
But since almost every major publication has made an article discussing whether it is a port or new game and Nintendo hasn't taken the 2 seconds it would take to confirm it is a entirely brand new game I would assume it isn't.

It's for the publicity. It's clearly a new game based on every bit of real info about t, but by not saying anything people are talking about it more than they normally would. If it's a port though, they run the risk of upsetting people who expect a new game by not saying it right away. You're making the assumption you are because there have been so many ports that you just assume everything is a port unless otherwise stated, when it's really the opposite. Just ask yourself one question: If it is a port, why is Nintendo trying to hide it for this specific game when they didn't do so for anything else? I also want to remind you that we've been in this exact same situation before, where when Switch was revealed and Splatoon was shown, there was debate over it being a port or a new game; Nintendo didn't say anything until the January conference. Trust me, it's Smash 5. Nintendo has no reason to hide it being a port unless they have the world's dumbest PR team, and if that were the case the Direct would have ended with a Labo showcase instead.
Just eliminate your bias for a second and look at the evidence. Look at the evidence on both sides and ask yourself if it really seems like a port, or if that's simply your assumption due to feeling that Switch has become a port machine. Also ask yourself if Nintendo really wants a port to headline the holiday.

It's just a guess, not a claim. I think it's a good guess because most of the major Wii U games seem to be getting ported to the Switch. A new game would definitely be more exciting, though.

Same characters and similar move sets each game. Graphics are the only thing that changes.

So, if it's a port, why are they not saying so when every other port was announced and marketed as such from the very start? What's different about this one that they feel the need to keep it secret that it's a port and go out of their way to deceive us, to the point that even Sakurai is being shady?

I really don't know. The game is supposed to come out this year, right? Why aren't they showing footage of it?
