Do you think that Sony and Microsoft are in prep for the NX? (PS4.5, etc)

First Phil Spencer talks about his idea to make the Xbox One potentially up-gradable Then we get this rumor about Sony thinking about a "PS4.5" or "PS-4K". Xbox One I can see. But what reason would Sony have to upgrade the PS4? VR? Really? Just wait for the PS5. Just make games. Are they THAT invested in VR??

Do you think that it's because of the NX coming out, and maybe being more advanced than the PS4 and Xbox One, that we're hearing about this? If Nintendo NX works, it could steal some of PS4's sales. And the Xbox One would be left in the dust. Maybe NX is more powerful than we think?

Just my two cents. What your opinion?

Nintendo is not a threat to Sony or MS and would not be in the foreseeable future. All Sony's and MS's decisions are very much likely independent of whatever Nintendo plans to do with the NX or their systems.

Really? Hmmm, I dunno. I just can't get that "Nintendo system + 3rd party games" scenario out of my head. Would it stomp Sony and MS? Of course not. But to say that they are not a threat doesn't seem very true.

It wouldn't matter, you have enough loyal MS/Sony fans to sustain any console market regardless of what Nintendo Releases. Even with the Wii, the 360/PS3 came close and the Wii enjoyed tons of sales from people who hadn't bought a console in years or never before to play Wii sports. They dont care about 3rd party games.

The Wiiu would of sold better with 3rd party support in my opinion but it still wouldn't of caught X1/PS4.

To me Nintendo shows what I dont want to have in gaming.-Motion controls, tablet controler, same games for the last 20+ years and the refusal to get with the times in online for fear of free speech.

Possibly? I think this was a long term strategy in place by Sony and MS long before Nintendo announced the NX. I remember them both discussing this when they were justifying the move to x86 as their hardware platform.

There is no way in hell Sony or MS are going to upgrade their current consoles and piss off their entire customer base in the process. Apart from anything else, a 4K-ready console upgrade would come at a cost that people would actually laugh at. Even a PC that can comfortably run 4K comes at a price that's out of bounds for all but the most hardcore of PC enthusiasts.

Also, NX... this is Nintendo who firmly believe it's all about the games... trash hardware and kids games is what they are all about. They probably don't even know what 4K is ffs.

The latest rumors are that NX will be as powerful as Xbox One or even slightly weaker.

Slightly weaker would never happen. Even Nintendo is not that out of touch.

Right, cause we all want a Metroid game without Samus and Paper Mario Sticker Fest again.

No, they're not out of touch, they're out of reach.

Has Nintendo been a threat to either of these systems in the past 2 generations? Sony and MS jumped on the motion on control bandwagon because it was easy cash. It worked for MS for a while but the success of the two systems were not hindered by the Wii or compromised because of the Wii. The existence of the Wii did more harm to gaming than good. In addition to that, even when third party games make it to a Nintendo system it still sells enormously better on the other two systems. Nintendo is not a threat to either company regardless of what the NX turns out to be. Nintendo will be starting from scratch with the NX while the other two systems will be ready or already launch system selling games with a userbase in the tens of millions.

Nintendos "image" was ruined 2 or 3 generations ago. They are lost among the masses and Sony or Microsfot chasing them would be foolish. Nintendo could release a console with 3 way SLI 980Ti's and a 5960X for $399 and still lose to Sony and Microsoft.

Because of what they achieved with the NES and SNES I will always hold out hope. My hopes will be dashed but I'm still going to do it.

From Wii to WiiU 90% consumer desertion rate so, I don't think any of them is worried at all.

NX is probably missing a point in today's market. I think the current console makers are more worried about how fast PC and the mobile market are moving. And traditionally moving from one console gen to another has been pretty disruptive to developers having to learn new tech and move to new sdk's, fix engines. The gradual and continual improvements that PC make allow developers to handle them when they are ready and keep chugging along with no worries. Same with customers, they can play the latest games, albeit with worse settings the longer they wait to upgrade, but there is no rapid cutoff that forces them into an upgrade.

The current way consoles are made they just have no chance keeping up with technology and the benefits for developers will really fall off the stronger PC gets.

Yeah I agree... I think releasing newer versions of consoles more often is a good move, generally speaking. Just as long as it's done the right way, without alienating gamers who have already bought the earlier versions.

And it can't be too often either, otherwise you start to lose what makes consoles what they are, and that's a cost-effective way to play games.

Considering that 90% isnt buying games from them, o i think they are. There might be a big market up for grabs. Who can get it?, who knows.

Nintendo is going to announce NX with promises of the same third party titles the Xbox One and PS4 consoles can play, and just like the Wii U probably promises of older third party titles like MGSV and Witcher 3, late and full priced, and when people don't bite they're going to lose their third party support before it even begins. Meanwhile they're going to hand their first party licenses over to people who make tablet games for iPads and that's all she wrote. Microsoft and Sony aren't even going to flinch when the NX releases.

Sony and Microsoft got complacent this gen due to Nintendo's false start. Their hardware is struggling to keep up to modern games, their games libraries are heavily lacking, and they are only really selling because they don't have any competiton.

If Nintendo releases a more powerful console that attracts both the third parties *and* Nintendo's stellar exclusives, the PS4 and Xbox 1 could be in trouble.

We know that Sony and Microsoft reacted to Nintendo last gen - releasing Kinect and Move in an effort to tap into Nintendo's runaway commercial success. If Nintendo launches a nore poweful console now and steals their thunder...I could see Sony and Microsoft reacting again with something similar.
