PS2 is outselling the X360 for 2008 so it's not dead yet.
It's a good system and a nice alternative for kids or gamers on a budget. A huge library of great games, the system itself is inexpensive and most of the games are as well.
I do think new releases will slow down, by the end of the year for PS2 though.
Um lets see the PS3 came out 2 years ago... yes the PS2 is official over.darkplayer
Not in australia as I cannot buy a ps3 to replace my ps2. So anyone wanting to play ps2 games must continue buying ps2's... I had to buy a new 1 cause my old drive broke a month ago
The only PS2 games being now for the most part are multiplats. The last exclusive was Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 (the last good one was GoW2).
It's not dead, but it is on it's last leg.
Of course the PS2 is not dead. Not only are games still in development for the PS2 but it also enjoys strong retail sales in all markets of the world. As many posters pointed out, the PS2 has outsold most of the current generation consoles, only trailing the Wii in sales for 2008. The PS2 is very attractive for consumers. Combine the $129 price point with a huge library of games, found cheaply both used and new and you can see why people are still buying this system. JFYI, Sony released a new revision a couple of months ago in JP with an internal power supply. We'll probably see it in the US soon.
Of course the PS2 will die at some point. One day they will stop production and the PS2 will be officially dead. Until then, it is alive and kicking. The PS1 was sold until 2005. My guess is that the PS2 will be sold until (early) 2010. We will probably see the PS4 in 2011, making the PS3 the "new" PS2. This is the Sony circle of console life.

yet the ps2 has had more AAA exclusives in that time.... if it is finally dead then it had a dignified gracefull death and slowly faded out insed of being rudely stabbed it the face like the x-box or dying before the next sytem came out like the GC.
edit; i don't think its dead and i still get alot of enjoyment out of mine, its still a great system in ist own right. ifact id go as far to say its the only sony console i need. it is duying but it has had a great lease of life with games like God of war.
This thread has just demonstrated that it just depends on what your definition of dead is. That's all there is to it.

If youre definition of "dead" is..
new games: no
console sales: no
fan base: no
support: no
"next-gen" HD display: yes
I personaly have 4... yes 4! PS2s in my household and do pic up a game now and then for it. If the definition of dead is x-box/GC or even as old as PS1/64/SNES/ect... then I dont count it as "dead" yet.
