Do you think the PS3 will surpass the 360 in sales when it's all said and done?

Hirai said it would at the end of its cycle, but Greenburg said it won't even if the PS3 doubles in sales and 360 sales are flat, not even until 2014.

But what do you guys think?

In NA, the chances are slim, but everywhere else, it's very likely that it could happen.

In answer to TC's question, I very much doubt it (at least for North America).

Well if Greenburg is right and he means WW sales then no. I have no idea how each sells and don't care but based on this Sony will come in 3rd .

If you look at the life spans of the two systems is likely to happen... Seeing as how the Ps3 was made for the long run while the 360 was just rushed out for a quick buck

Well, itt depends if sony allows a price drop the sales of the ps3 are guarenteed to exceed. However, it also depends if they are able to market their product effeciently.

Defiently not, this gen, but the question is when all is said and done, which would be a yes. I don't think the PS3 could every pass the 360 in NA, but everywhere else, there is a good chance, especially in Japan.

I predicted they would, but it seems very unlikely because the US will always give the 360 the advantage over the PS3. So I was wrong on that prediction and would like to say that they won't, but a little part of me continues to think that there is a possibility for the PS3 to come back and surpass the 360. We'll see though when the generation is over.

Its hard to define really the end, I would say that the PS3 will sell longer then the 360 once the next generation arrives. Much like the PS2 I think the PS3 will have long legs in terms of sales and price gradually decrease. So I suppose in the long run, yes, PS3 will surpass the 360 in sales.

Nope. Sorry, but it is just too far behind. Sony has been Dethroned by Nintendo for 1st place, then by MS for second. Fanboys can whine and wimper all they want, but sony is dead last this gen.farrell2k
as a ps3 fan not fanboy, i do beleive its dead last but it could catch up next gen when everyhting else is out and new and more expensive than the ps3

I sure hope not, if Sony does overtake MS, how much money do you think the next playstation will be? How many unnessasary things are they going to try and tojan horse into our living rooms? Don't get me wrong, I don't want MS to monopolize the video game market either. I just want Sony to learn their lesson and realize that the consumer is not as dumb as they once thought.

No. Not in NA and not worldwide. Sony simply expected consumers to shell out too much money for thier system initially and the damage has been done.

The 360 is substantially cheaper and can play games that are pretty much identical which has taken a portion of Sony's hardcore gaming fanbase, while the Wii has picked up a huge portion of their casual gaming fanbase. Sony did have the cheapest Blu Ray player going for them, but unfortunately even that's no longer true. This gen is a wash for Sony, but I'll be eagerly awaiting news of the PS4 specs to see what they learned this time around.

MS is in a better position to execute any brand strategy.... When Sony tries to apply pressure with a price drop... MS will just counter with one of it's own...While the sales for both systems will increased...the gap will be minimally affected...

At the end of the day whoever wins in the "sales" area..Sony will have lost the most this gen..MS and NIN will have gained market share ..Sony lost market share .....And A LOT of it

You make an interesting argument that coming in dead last could be a blessing in disguise to Sony ethics-wise. Plus, there's nothing wrong with the PS3 coming in third so long as it keeps cranking out good games (much like Gamecube did).

This is stupid. If Sony is in last place they wont be able to keep the PS3 selling longer then everyone else no matter what they say. The market dictates how long the console lasts, retailers wont stock them if no one buys them. Sony's 10 year prediction was based on an expectation of PS2 style market domination. Of course they arent backing down from that but it wont see anything close to PS2 and PS level support and sales towards the end. MS is confident their console will last at least as long as the PS3 but they arent stupid enough to make 10 year predictions.

I hope it straightens them out. Forcing people into buying one thing to get another (having to buy into Blu-ray to get a PS3) is just not right. And assuming that people will buy anything they put the name playstation on.

Yes, I believe the PS3 will surpass the 360 in sales but by then it will be considered a hollow victory to us gamers, but it won't matter to Sony because they got bigger things to worry about.

It's definitely possible with the exclusive games coming and a price cut I could see sony outselling m$ they won't be able to touch nintendo but they can get m$ 360 is only $8 mil more and thats pretty shameful for a system with a one year head start without competition

If Sony doesn't lower the price then no it won't. The best it can do is come close but it won't ever overtake it with the way things are currently going and if there is no significant drop in price (not this game they are doing with different models but keeping the price the same).

I don't think the PS3 will, but it doesn't need to surpass the 360 in sales. As long as there're games available and my copy of the PS3 doesn't fail, I'm happy. :)

It's not gonna happen. Even though I will probably be getting SFIV for PS3 (PS3 d-pad > 360 d-pad) aswell as FFXIII (one disc > four discs) and even though I am very much looking forward to Heavy Rain and the next Team Ico Project (assuming it will ever come out), anything Sony do right this gen will be too little too late.

They've had their chance.

Depends on the lifecycle. IF the 360 ended one year before the PS3, I can see it pretty well.

Very unlikely for this to happen unless the ps3 is supported for the next seven years while the xbox 360 is abandoned in another years but otherwise I really don't see this happening at all.

We've passed many watershed moments where it SHOULD have been obvious the console positions have been set and will remain that way the rest of the gen. First when the 360 was coming out first with pretty much an equal gaming machine(though some bought sony's PR rather than interpreting what the specs said). Then the cost announcement at E3 06. Then was the PS3 not only losing holiday season 2005 by not being out, but losing holiday 2006 during its launch and not even selling out. Then we had the PS3 not even being able to make aggresive moves even when RROD was at its worst. Then we have MS dropping the price below what sony could. Then we have Sony dropping the price within months of entering the market. Then we have Sony losing holiday 2007. We finally see sony make up some ground during the slow sales months by releasing MGS4, only to see all the gains they made in 6 slow months being wiped out by the first month or two of MS's price cuts. Now we have sony losing to MS by 2 to 1 in holiday 2008. Let's not forget many of the former sony mainstays now being found on the 360 giving it fewer and fewer games with established market presence to close the gap(ie FF, DMC, Tekken, RE, etc). With MS improving reliability and having more leverage to dictate pricecuts, there simply isn't any viable reason to think the PS3 is going to suddenly shoot past the 360.

It already IS all said and done. The PS3 hasn't gained an inch in over 2 years. This is a football game and the score is 28-10 with two minutes left....an absolute miracle is the only thing that will keep Sony out of last place.

If one day the news channel reports that Nintendo ripped everyone off with a console and no dependable software to justify its longevity, instead of going with the flow and keep pretending to be as intrigued as the ignorant 40 year olds out there, I think both PS3 and 360 would surpass the wii in sales.

And then the two ACTUAL game console makers can duke it out.

2 years is not said and done it's just the beginning and you can say the same about the xbox360 3 years and it still has the same 8 million lead from the 1 year head start.

The generation started over 3 years ago, and has two or three years left. Tell me, following trends, if something has made up zero ground in two years how much ground is it on pace to make up over the next 2, 4, 6, or 20 years? There used to many that shared your blinded optimism, at some point you just have to accept the inevitable.
