Earlier in the week I was watching G4 and some game developers were complaing that people with Wii's don't buy their games. Do you think that people are just buying it for the motion sensing gimmick? If people are buying it for that reason people will eventually just get tired of it. Do you think the Wii is a fad that will die out soon?

PS. I can kinda see why there is not much 3rd party support for the Wii becuase most of the games are targeted towards children and mostly children and soccer moms own Wii's and will only play games like Mario Party and Electibis or whatever that damn game is. Tell me what you think!

It's because developers have barely released any good games, and the good games they release sometimes get no marketing whatsoever (Zack and Wiki)

A bit of a fad, but it has the potential to be way more. If third party developers took a chance with it I believe it could be just as good or even better third party wise as the 360 or PS3. As of now no one's willing to take the dive and try (Ubisoft did, Red Steel sold well and it wasn't even very good, or good at all).

I think the Wii isn't a fad, but I do think its sales will slow down in 08. Even with this said I think that it will remain ahead of both Sony and MS for this gen, winning the this gens console war. If PS3 fails to deliver in 08 I think only MS will even be close to beating the Wii's popularity.

Right and wrong .. not all of them are ..

Anyway Wii is clearly not a Fad .. people don't buy games off the developers because they have not been releasing good games .. Most likely because of the mind set that the Wii would not sell well .. But now that has passed so we will see.

Also they should actually Advertise that is the problem why Zak and Wiki isn't selling, the only 3rd Party developers that actually advertise games on the Wii are SEGA and Ubisoft and the games they advertise sell well when they advertise Nights always is advertised were I live I don't know if it is selling well yet, so the problem isn't really the fact that people don't buy 3rd Party games it is that 3rd Party developers need to actually advertise.

no its not a fad. sales and interest remain strong.

most 3rd parties have nothing to complain about. they shove alot of crap on wii and/or they dont promote it. if there surprised thats its not selling then they need to go back and learn first class business. the wii is not an easy ride to makign money. it may be cheaper to develop for but thats not an excuse for laziness. they not only need to get the controls right, they also need to get the content of the game right. we know that the wii can do great games, nintendo has demonstrated it. theres nothign fundimentally wrong with the system. but (as one review put it) imagination and ambition are two things that are absolutely needed to be successful on wii. otherwise ure game will drown in a sea of cookie cutter crap.

and marketing....bloody hell. capcom have no one to blame for zack and wikis performance but themselves. 0 marketing and promotion....zilch. it got the okami treatment (yes a great game can sell crap on any platform...not just wii).

If people are calling the wii a fad then the term fad may actually be a good thing. If the wii is a fad what are the PS3 and 360?

The Wii most certainly is a fad. Its cheap, its fun, it has the novelty of a unique controller setup; but I just don't think that there is the range of possibilities that the other two systems have.

In terms of the system wars, the early front-runner isn't always the winner.I have so many friends with Wii's and I think its a great system (own a PS3 personally), but for my personal taste in gaming, there just isnt anything that has caught my eye. Exceptions are Brawl, Kart, Zelda, the system favorites.

I don't think it will ever "die out," but I think you will see a lot of people pulling a 360, I.E. selling the system to get one of the others. Nintendo did an amazing job with the system but I think they should look atappealing to gamersof last-gen, especially the millions of PS2 owners to buy their product over the PS3 or 360.

If the Wii was such a "fad", then why is it selling like f@(#@ing crazy STILL?! Aren't fads supposed to die down incredibly soon? And since when has a video game console actually been a fad?

Lemmings and Hermits have to call the Wii a "fad", because they have no other insults towards it.

People need to get off the stigma of fads being "short". The Wii could definitely be a fad, one that lasts 10 years. It just all depends on whether or not it's popularity comes to a screeching halt at some point. Could it be a fad? Yes Is this a bad thing? Not in the least

The reason most people say this is because of the fact that NPD reported it has a lower attach rate then the other two current gen consoles.

Sure, lots of people are going to call it a fad, but then again, they said the same thing for the DS. Look how that turned out. It's just that at the moment, the few good games that aren't first party are games no one has heard of, especially those who are the casuals that have a Wii as their first console.

More of a fraud than a fad because it doesn't deserve to be where it is, looking at its qualities. Like you say the bulk of people buying in are those after the motion control craze. The hardcore sheep will always buy first party games, Resi 4 only sold so well because it was the only thing worth buying anyway. Anyone that wanted to play it already had on last-gen platforms and the Wii version isn't really any better. Personally I prefer playing it on the platform and controller it was designed for to begin with (I have both too, ok well I gave the waggle edition to my brother because it wasn't worth starting over). Its a shame because I expected it to be the only console I'd need this gen, a lot of lost potential. Some of which is due to its development being focused on this core audience that got one for Wii Sports/Wii Fit, instead of something with more meat on the bone.

Keep in mind that Pokemon was a fad, one of the biggest as a matter of fact. It was HUGE, everyone practically played the game, had the cards, or had relatives who did. Then it turned into something only the youngest of us play. A lot of that stuff commonly goes that way.

I can kinda see why there is not much 3rd party support for the Wii becuase most of the games are targeted towards children and mostly children and soccer moms own Wii's!Tech-Man08

this seems to be the popular opinion among young teenagers/children, and i'd probably think the same thing if i were a teenager/child too

but being in my 20's, i know that the wii is very popular among the adult audience

having an xbox 360 with halo and a headset in your college dorm is quite a bit more dorky than having a wii in your dorm with wii sports

when i worked downtown toronto, when other adults(high 20's, low 30's) discussed video games, they'd only discuss the wii....no mention of 360/ps3

the fanboys of system wars need to realise that the wii is a hot item for ALL age groups

Ahh yes, but what is a brief period of time? Big hair rock? All through the 80's. Mullets? Hell, you still see those but the fad itself pretty darn long in the 80-90's. Disco music? 1974-1979. 5 years, same as most consoles. What is brief to us does not always cross over into what society sees as brief.

I usually believe that a fad will last about a year, but the Wii's success is more than one year old and interest is still strong. I will not say it is a fad, but a trend that will have long-lasting implications for the video game industry. Video games should be mainstream and universial, not an exclusive, elitist "old boys" club.

What can be called a fad today may be called a standard tomorrow.

No, the Wii has proven that its here to stay. Nintendo has found a strategy that they've touched upon but failed with before, but now have nailed perfectly. Advertising to the hardcore is advertising to a niche.

Earlier in the week I was watching G4 and some game developers were complaing that people with Wii's don't buy their games.

Tech-Man08

Maybe they should make better games?

Seriously, the only devs complaining of not selling are the ones making games no body in their right mind would buy.
