Poll Do you think there will be a midgen refresh this gen? (57 votes)

Yes 67%
No 33%

I was hoping for one as I like the idea of having a slimmer, and more powerful console to keep up with the market. But not sure since it's been a year already and PS5 and XSX are still having supply issues. What do you think, SW? Do you think there will be a midgen refresh this gen?

Yes, PS5 is weak, can’t play games in 4K 120fps. This gen was a mistake. Fortnite, FIFA, Call of Duty fans gonna continue to flock to PC cause it’s better for competitive gameplay and don’t have to pay greedy Sony tax for pricey games and pricey free internet.

I hope not. I want this gen to be no more than 5 years. But seeing how its impossible to buy the systems, i bet you we're in for another 8y long generation, which blows. So because of that, yea, i think there's gonna be a Pro version in about 3 years.

Ha! Most definitely.... If history is any indication from the last several generations, we should be looking at a nice update around holiday 23, maaayybe 24.

The mid gen thing is precisely why I'm waiting... Its a strategy that THEY themselves put on me.

"buy a mid gen console with more power!" only a few years after buying day 1? Ok, lesson learned! Plus, when has Sony or Microsoft had a bang up launch of must have games? They still don't and the console is a year old. Logic says wait. Hype says NOW! using logic as opposed to hype to govern my gaming life is leading to some wonderful changes in my mid life gaming habits.

I would imagine so. The systems are already showing limitations and with them being so hard to find, this gen is going to last 8-10 years. I see the pro versions as a way to please more hardcore fans, while the base models will stay the big sellers. I do not see them happening until late 2023 to late 2024. The actual cpu in the machines aren't as weak as what the X1 and PS4 cpu's were when they launched, so I expect them to try to squeeze more out of them since it is a less limiting factor with these consoles.

Yes, though it might be a bit later. I expect a 5nm die shrink with incremental (more cores and/or IPC) CPU gains due to the current base models already nearing that 4.0 GHz base clock ceiling, with most of the gain coming in the GPUs. Radeon RX 7000 or even 8000-based, probably with specialised hardware ray-tracing unlike the current repurposed TMUs solution, and maybe hardware FSR as well.

I would say that the odds are highly in favour of a mid gen refresh.

Probably.

If Sony and MS were given a chance, after their experience with producing their current systems, they could both fully produce systems that were fully capable of 4k60fps/1440p@120fps at max settings on virtually everything if released in the next 3 years.

I say at least 3 years because that's probably how long it would take for chip manufacturing to catch up even to current demand.

That's "if" Both Sony/Microsoft choose to go that route.

Sony was vocally against the idea of a mid-gen refresh this gen, but that could have been smoke and mirrors. It makes more sense to have mid-gen refreshes this gen than last gen.

That's the thing, it's not about how things are "now".

The RnD is what would be taking place now, not the actual production of the systems. All companies develop products with a vision of how the market will be years down the line, Sony and MS are no different.

Maybe in 5 years. I don't see this covid/chip shortage situation resolved anytime soon.

GPUs have been 2000 euro for the past year, screw this shit!

We'll likely see them in 2023/24 and I don't see them going for less than $600.

there will certainly be slim models of both consoles. no doubt. it brings down the BOM and reducing the cost of entry is no harm when trying to get more people to use your services and buy games for a platform.

as for beefed up models: harder to say. as far as i know the X1X and PS4 pro didnt do very well sales wise. both models were still outsold significantly by their base models during the time both were on the market. so they may not bother.

at the same time there is more meaningful capacity to improve with these consoles: especially in the RT department. assuming AMD beef up their RT performance (why wouldnt they?) it would be great to see those improvements into a PS5 Pro/SXSX. they may find some upscaling algorithms (a big area of research at the moment) that would benefit from some custom silicon too.

2024 seems like the perfect time for a refresh and cross gen development would mostly be over.

No we only got them because of 4k last gen. 8k is too far off and I think most games being able to do 12o fps is too far off. So really no reason for it.

Hopefully not. Would be nice if companies were able to make consoles that lasts for at least 5 years, and developers were able to develop games that work good on said consoles.

Native 4K continues to be too much for these consoles, so I’m gonna vote yes. And pushing 120fps drops the resolution down as low as 1080p. And forget about raytracing.

We kinda need a refresh right now…

Tech advances too fast for that. And it’s better to “refresh“ a console line than to move on to a new generation. Gens in the past were only like 4-5 years. Mid gen refreshes advance the capabilities without leaving folks behind completely. That’s the better solution imo

These consoles can barely handle ray tracing, they're already behind the RTX 20 series which is 2 years older than them. Consoles can't do ray tracing without sacrificing the overall graphics of a game. It doesn't help that they're aiming for 4K with no solutions as good as DLSS. As more powerful RTX cards come out over the generation the gap in ray tracing performance and visuals will become very noticeable.

assets are bloody massive. for god sakes to render native 4k sky in forza games... min 32 gb of vram and multi tb of ssd storage in raid mode. seeing the sky is record and done in 12k. then down scale. but still its hug.

for years now we checker boarding/fsr/dlss what ever the terms the like to use. 1080p on high...

It gives me a chance to buy something with a little more kick and I can give my base ps5 to my wife, that way we both have one. (she only plays like one or 2 games, SIMS and Rocket League.

I think there will be in 3-4 years the hardware is top notch at the moment but there will be a time where it will be upgraded. You see it last gen so it's silly to think it won't happen.

Consoles needed it last gen with their GTX 750 graphics.

I suppose if it's a long enough gen, but it'll probably won't be before four years.

Is it really needed though?

I don’t think there will be pro models coming up. People still can’t get their hands on current consoles, and in 3 years time these consoles will still be selling well enough.

I do think Sony will release a slim version, and it will look very different to the current ps5.

Please god.

PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were introduced because of 4KTV’s becoming more mainstream. They may not have set some precedent, but the current-gen consoles could get better models but the previous one's aren’t the reason for that.

Back to the topic at hand. If you all want my opinion, PS5 runs/plays perfectly fine from what I tested & seen so far, and unlike others, I'm not bothered by its design/size at all. And as @Chutebox pointed out, doubt it'll get a mid-gen refresh in late 2023 release. Supply chain issues aren't expected to resolve until late 2023/early or mid 2024.

Of course there will be.

Around 2023 we'll see the PS5 Pro and XSXSX get 4K/60 (natively) or 2.8K/120. In games like COD they'll get 4K/120 instead of 2.7K/120 like they have now.

I am certain it will happen. With 120hz TVs coming out, people will want more from their systems and currently it’s either a 4K/30/60fps or 1080p/120fps affair. They’re gonna have to start bumping things up in a few years to keep up with consumer demands.

No. I don't think component prices will fall enough to offer better spec at the same price and a pro version would be just to expensive.

Maybe a cheaper made slim PS5 though.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say "no"..

If the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X turned out to be widely popular, then I could easily see a mid-gen refresh happening again.. but considering that the vast majority of people continued to purchase and play on the base models, both companies may not see the point in going down that road again..

the mid-gen refresh may very well go down in gaming history as a one-time experiment.. with game streaming on the horizon along with all games seemingly coming to PC across the board, (not to mention the continued chip shortages and bot scalpers) I'm not sure if anyone is even asking for new consoles within the next 2 years..

That said, I buy a new phone and laptop every couple years so I'd have no problem buying a new console.. so I do totally understand the logic and appeal of new hardware..

These companies are cutting their production estimates for their brand new consoles and can't keep them on store shelves, and you're already asking if there will be a mid-gen refresh?

I think the above issue should be addressed first.

How bout they worry about pumping out some more games that take advantage of the hardware we got, rather than waste money & time on midgen pseudo upgrades.

One X & Pro produced absolutely nothing....slightly better visuals & maybe better frame rates if the visuals weren't too taxing.

Just give us 6-7yrs of ground breaking games.....some new IP's & a bit more genre diversity. Consoles are not like pc's & shouldn't be...you can't just upgrade a part inside a console like a graphics card in pc, the whole console is literally the graphics card, so you have to replace the whole lot.

MS will need one AGAIN this gen once PS5's "secret sauce" gets shot out of the Sony 1st party phallus & smears Phil Mattrick's face with humiliation AGAIN. Just like with PS4 vs XBOne.
