yes, no, maybe so.

remember Nintendo has taught M and S that you dont need top of the line hardware to make alot of money. It should also be noted that you dont need the best hardware to make good games.

Only nintendo can benefit from the release of a new console in standard console life fashion. Sony, Microsoft, and their developers have nothing to gain from increasing the requirements beyond this point in 2012 or earlier. I think this gen should last until somewhere between 2014 and 2018.

Im guessing this gen should last much longer than the previous ones due to increasing production costs of basically everything

I hope so I'm not down to pay another $ 200-$400 for a console anytime soon. I really hope this gen last until 2015.

4 years and the consoles are just now becoming affordable, about even with what the consoles of last gen cost at launch. Now is the time when this gen is becoming accessable to the mainstream consumer. So in that sense, this gen is just beginning. Most people (myself included) think the graphics this gen are just fine and really don't need to be any better (except for the Wii). Now the only question is, where are the games??? It looks like next year will finally see the release of many great games to really get this gen moving along. If this gen lasted another 5 years I'd be totally happy with that as long as the great games keep on coming.

This. I don't think devs will support a new gen for a long time. How could they?

Yes it will last way longer till HDTVs becomes a standard releasing a new generation with higher specs while more than 60% of gamers still using SDTVs wont do anything.

Yeah, the market isn't ready for a hardware change in home consoles. They wouldn't sell well at all. companies are better off selling games and peripherals for already established consoles so, you can expect to play on current gen hardware (obviously not PC) for I guess 2 years, maybe 1.5 years but I don't think so. They're probably going to announce new consoles at the end of the next year, 1 year in development and an early march launch in 2012. That is what the voices tell me.

Yes.

Why wouldnt it theres not much to improve on that would make you want a next gen console especially a PS3.

The law of diminishing returns is what makes any upcoming generation transition unlikely. As it stands, what is possible on console hardware and top of the range PC hardware isn't that much of a jump which is odd considering how long the consoles have been out now. So with this in mind, it's going to take a lot longer before the technology (in the PS3 and 360 at least) is unable to stand up to expectations of presentation. I'd say that 2015 seems to be the sweet spot, after all the PS2 managed to remain somewhat relevant for about seven years so it's no stretch of the imagination that these consoles in the face of a slowing pace of hardware innovation will remain viable for about ten.

this gen will last longer for sure. we have paid to much for system this gen, and i dont think companies can afford to abandon this gen 5 years after it started this time around.

This gen doesn't feel over to me yet. It hardly even feels like it started TBH. I can't see a new console release in the next 3 years at all. I'm thinking in the next 5-6 years though and we'll see what happens.
