Do you think Wii will ever get a GOTY?

I like all 3 consoles lineups but from the Wii's lineup I can only see a few that could be GOTY candidates.

I think if Wii is to get a GOTY the title has to be very unique and innovative, since PS3 and 360 are getting plenty of powerhouses in the coming years. For 2007 Wii has SMG, SSBB and MP3. Without the strong graphics the atmosphere could be lost when compared to a PS3/360 GOTY candidate but Wii could make up for it with its original controls. 

GOTY 2007 will probably go to either GTAIV, MGSIV, Crysis, Spore, Halo 3 more than likely, depending on whether or not those games are released this year. Next year there is RE5 coming for PS3/360 which could very well take the GOTY title just like RE4 did. There's also FFXIII and White Knight Story. I personally think if Wii is to get a GOTY it's going to be an incredibly innovative title which is just pure fun and makes you forget about the graphics.

Will Wii ever get a GOTY or is the competition just too strong? I'm basically asking will great graphics +  great gameplay on PS3/360/PC be chosen over average graphics + unique gameplay on the Wii? What do you guys think?

Sooooo few games have been announced for each platform yet. The very fact that Wii is sucking in third party support means that it very well could recieve several game of the year awards from different gaming websites. 

I don't know if it will win one or not, but GOTY is just another useless label anyways. It only carries significance in the minds of the fanboys. Real gamers can recognize a good game without being told it is good.SmashBrosLegend

Useless label? That's a bit harsh. I've always thought it's great because it's basically an award to the devs of the game telling them that people appreciate what they've done.

Plus, it could mean increased sales for the particular game, if it gets enough recognition in the gaming community.

It may mean something to the developers, but it really shouldn't mean anything to the gamers themselves. Whether 

or not a game wins an award should not effect the gameplay experience, and neither should sales.

I was just talking about actual nintendo made games.  Basically pointing out the Nintendo is GOTY making material and theyve proved it in the past. 

If Mario Galaxy comes out this year, I would give it 5 to 1 odds of winning.

As a side note to FFXIII being mentioned, expect it sometime around the holidays...in 2008..if not later. There has always been a multi y7ear span between releases and XII has not been out that long.

You have to consider that GC/PS2/Xbox were all very similar. This gen if devs start being innovative with games on the PS3/360 it's going to be a little harder for Wii to compete since it doesn't have the same graphical power.

Graphics do a lot to a game. Having said that, like I said before, Wii could come up with a very innovative title and take GOTY. I do think it's a bit harder for the Wii to get a GOTY though, just my view though.

Ummm sure why not...... Some of the titles you mentioned might not do anything special at all in comparison to the other games in the series.

The only guaranteed titles in there that imo shows some fresh interesting stuff is Spore and yes even Crysis, since those games at least have backed that up with info and gameplay footage.

We know nothing about GTA, other then a 1 minute trailer and MGS while it did present some interesting news, we trully only saw a few 15 minute videos, showing the graphisc of the game and some insight on its story. The same thing can be said of Halo. We have pratically nothing to make any kind of assumptions or base any kind of opinions on any of those games.

True. I agree that it wouldn't mean much to the gamers themselves. The title is still quite a big thing for me though. Strong encouragement to devs to work even harder to please us gamers.

What kind of a question is this? Predicting whether or not Wii will ever get a GOTY is no different than predicting whether the PS3 or 360 will ever get a GOTY (although the 360 already did, so I guess that doesn't count... however TP got GOTY in many places so in a sense it already has a GOTY). There is still a high likelihood that Wii could get a GOTY title this year, most likely with Super Mario Galaxy or Metroid Prime 3: Corruption if Retro can manage to use that extra development time wisely.REVOLUTIONfreak

PS3/360 have an edge over Wii this gen though in terms of graphical power (and in turn price because of the strong hardware).

Just because PS3/360 don't have Wii controls it doesn't mean devs can't be innovative. I think GTAIV/MGSIV/Halo 3 for 2007 and RE5 for 2008 will be extremely innovative. That's why I'm saying Wii has more pressure on it since it can't do the same level of graphics. 

It has to be incredibly innovative to win the GOTY title this gen I think.

The Gamecube had great graphics for it's price point. I still salute Nintendo for being able to make a system that had much better visual hardware than the Playstation 2 while being able to keep the price at rock bottom. Unlike Microsoft.

But do real gamers buy those games, the answer to that is a big NO.  If they did there wouldn't be any top ten list of great games no one played. 

You know what I find ironic? The same people that say Wii's graphics suck are the same ones that praised games of the same level of quality (or less) on their last gen consoles. Wasn't it just a few months ago that we were still playing GCN/PS2/Xbox? IMO graphics don't influence the game, the art style does... and last I checked there was no technical limitation to art styles.REVOLUTIONfreak

And I agree, a strong art style + unique gameplay could very well be a great game for the Wii. No More Heroes has that opportunity.

On topic, thanks. I think GOTY title does mean a lot to many people though. Like there's always many people that vote in the Reader's Choice GOTY. Just a good way for the gamers to say "thanks devs you made a freaking amazing game". Hoping GTAIV takes the title this year, lol.

I think the game would have to use all the Wii strenghts have a great shot:

1) Use the wii-mote on gameplay elements that wouldn't be possible on regular controllers.

2) Pushes the graphics significally from the GC.

3) Uses WiiConnect24 on a meaningful way.

4) Mii's

Great graphics can create a much better atmosphere for the game. Like, honestly, tell me what you would rather play: RE5 with PS2 graphics or RE5 with PS3 graphics?

It should be the latter right? Because with those new graphics comes a whole new level of how strong the atmosphere can be. And with better hardware comes more ways for the devs to be creative and open up new ways of playing games.

I kinda agree actually with those points. Probably why I think Super Mario Galaxy has the best chance of getting GOTY for the Wii this year. If it can be as innovative as SM64 was back in the day, GTAIV/Halo 3 etc have some heavy competition.

There was plenty of atmosphere in SH2 on the PS2, one of the earliest games for the system.

Like I said, I'd rather play RE5 on PS3 rather than RE5 on PS2. Why? Because I know Capcom have a talented dev team with RE games and I know they can be innovative with their gameplay yet create an amazing atmosphere for their game which wouldn't be the same with worse graphics.

Did you ever play 'D' on the Dreamcast?

Not really into PC games, and I'm not as graphic obsessed as I sounded in that last point (I actually own a DS over a PSP). Never heard of/played D on Dreamcast.

My real point that you might be missing is this: For Wii to get a GOTY title the devs will have to be incredibly innovative, and make an experience that isn't possible on the PS3/360. There is no reason devs can't be innovative with the PS3/360 though and since PS3/360 have the edge in graphics, I think Wii may find it hard to get a GOTY title.

Kind of proven last year with Gears taking the title over Zelda. Do you think Gears would have got the title if it was on the original Xbox? No, because it needed those graphics, that level of realism, to create the desired effect and Epic are talented so the gameplay was already fantastic. 

It's very unlikely unless some company releases a real ground breaking title.

Point 1:  I think that it'll get to the point that the 360/PS3 will need to be incredibly innovative to create an experience not possible on the Wii (which will be MUCH harder) to get a GOTY over the Wii consistently.  The Wii is unique, they are not.

Point 2:  Gears played better than Zelda.  Zelda was too easy and a little too random.  Though, as a whole, I think Zelda was better, if Gears had been maybe twice as long consistently as good as it was, there would be no doubt that it should have won.

1. The same can be said the opposite way though. GTAIV/RE5/Halo3/MGSIV etc would just be a hella of a lot of worse on the Wii. Why aren't the PS3/360 unique? Why downplay the great effect good graphics can have?

2. Well that's an opinion. I've played a few Zelda titles (6-7 in total I think) and TP wasn't "woah" for me, it wasn't bad either though.
