In my experience they practically are, minus a couple of party/chat options on LIVE. Oh and LIVE has a more talkitive community from what I noticed.

After getting a PS3 this year and spending some time on PSN I haven't noticed any REAL differences besides those chat options.

The amount of lag is the same (their both primarily p2p)

Downloads are the same (at least for me, but I have heard it's slower for others)

Other than thse chat options is there any BIG reason as to why people say one is better than the other?

Is there any REAL reason as to why I payed for a Gold account earlier this year (before I got my PS3)

I still have 6 months left on my Gold account and unfortunately I haven't seen any real reason to renew it except for my friends who most happen to be on LIVE.

Well I use both and while I do use Live more because I like playing with my friends, aside from that I don't see what makes it CONSIDERABLY better. Can you please explain why?

No, I don't think they're same. I find that Xbox downloads are a lot faster and Live has a bigger community. I find that Xbox Live is lot more unified and it's easier to join games with buddies. I like how they're demos for pretty much every arcade game so you can at least try it out for yourself to see if you like it, rather than relying on reviews or videos. I do, however, notice more lag on Xbox Live (I experience hardly any on PSN). I think PSN is sllooowwwly getting there and Sony is at least trying to get better, whereas Xbox Live pretty much has it in the bag (console-wise), however I don't find it justifiable to pay anything for it. I care more for the single player experience so, in the end, I don't really care which service is better as I haven't played online in about year.

Same in that they allow you to access all of the game you purchased. Different in that you have to pay a ransom before you can see your beloved multiplayer with one of them. ;)

All I want to do is play online so in that aspect they are the same. But overall, I think XBL is better because it is fully integrated and seems like it is really part of the console. PSN just sort of feels like it's there...if that makes any sense.

Still, Live is a ripoff.

well so far with my limited time with live i have noticed its the same as psn... ( i dont use party chat so... big deal) But downloads are faster usually.. took me like 15-20 minutes to download gears 2 all in one dlc thing... whereas probably would have taken... a hour on psn.. besides that..no difference lag wise or anything..

i also think it has to do with the time and the game as well... cause i know there have been some updates on psn which were huge but downloaded extremely fast to my surprise.

SOedipus

1. I'll give you downloads as I have heard they are slower for alot of people (not for me though). There are more people on Live but your over exaggerating it as there are still ALOT of people on PSN. I never havea hard time getting into a full or near-full match in any game.

2. I don't have too many friends on PSN so I can't really say, but I don't seem to have trouble joining up with them in the games we do play.

3. Yes I agree that there are alot more demos for the arcade/minis games on Live

4. Lag is the same for me on both systems so that's a lie, I lag on both Live and PSN (except for Killzone but that's a dedicated server so it doesn't count)

5. They are pretty much neck-and-neck IMO aside from the chat features

6. Yeah I agree, I really don't see the value in paying for it anymore after I got my ps3. Before then I had no problems paying because it was my only system and I thought that PSN was bad, but then after I spent some time on PSN I endend up being suprised at how similar it is.

Not even close, PSN for what it is, is a good service but it doesn't come close to Live

Beside the obvious major features like Cross game and Party chat

Live's interface is better, there is tons more content on Live, the download speeds are faster and you don't have to install demos.

One thing I do like more though is the blue tooth headset over the standard 360 headset though.

As far as lag goes, I get tons of it on PSN with Tekken 6, people who say that PSN never lags are liars

Aside from a more community feel for me, the download speed is nowhere near the same for me. Live downloads are much quicker imo.

Live hasadvantagefor group players, but bad to lone wolves.

Party Chat and private chat are bad features to ppl who dont use them cuz they have to play against well communicated players on xbox live by themslves.

So it's not really a pro or con. It depends on your playstyle.

$ issue. yeah Xbox live costs $50 an year.

 You do realise that both services are primarily p2p right? Your whole lag argument is just lemming fanboy bias. Your the one who is lying

I will give you the download speeds as I do hear it varies from person to person (it's the same as Live for me)

Aside from cross game chat your not really giving any REAL legit reasons.

Everything you said is true but what people are saying about download speeds I haven't really noticed, they don't seem any better to me. Let's put it down plainly XBL is better then PSN, just not $60 better. That's why I won't be renewing my membership.

PSN is just worse, Sony fanboys will argue otherwise but the infrastructure in Xlive is just better with faster download speeds, no installs, no mandatory 10-30 minute regular updates that do nothing. Basically you get what you pay for. If you consider that PSN is free, then they're even on a value basis. If you ignore the price, Xlive > PSN.

Thing about the download speeds and installs or no installs is these have to do more with the Xbox and PlayStation, not really about PSN and Live Gold, no installs isn't a feature, it's more about the two console being built differently.

major features cross game and party chat? i dont think so...i dont use neither.. lives interface is cluttered with ads of stuff i'd never use , ps3 is SIMPLE and effective.. and funnily enough i prefer the 360 headset as its more comfortable then the ps3 blu tooth mic.. (though the quality is no where near as good as the ps3 mic) and i dont know about others but there is definately lag in ps3 games but that entirely depends on the host and other factors. they are equal as far as im concerned (besides faster downloads for 360) THATS IT

I always wondered why there are ads on Live? I mean I never saw them clustered all over the place, but I always see at least a few in every category, and they arn't just Game ads either. Some of them are deoderant and car ads, hell I EVEN saw a Wendy's ad on the Live dashboard before.

I do like the PS3 dashboard because it sort of reminds me of a PC. But that's just me though

They're both almost the same. Xbox live just is more of a community type of service that offers a bit more choices(party chat, play your own music, and in game chat). It's easier to do things. Also, yes there are tons of ads on xbox live and I find it weird that we pay for xbox live and still get ads.

The fundamental basis for the networks are the same. They allow p2p games to run on their platforms. The only real difference is in the business handling of the two networks. MS charges a fee to access p2p gaming, while the psn doesn't, and many of Sony's first party games use dedicated servers, effectively making those games run better online than anything you'll find on the 360.

I guess Sony makes money from things like micro transactions in Home, and all those dynamic themes and stuff like them off PSN.

like someone else said LIVE feels like it's a part of the console while PSN it's like an extra thing added to it. The community seems bigger on LIVE and more people have their mics on while playing. In my case PSN downloads do go slower than LIVE ones andcross game chat/party chat it's a nice addition when you and your friends just want to kill time and chat while playing single player games or waiting on people to play a certain game or while watching a game on ESPN.

It's not a huge difference between them but there are things that tip the balance in favor of LIVE imho.

No, they are not the same. For one you have to pay while the other is free. That's pretty much the main difference.

Give or take a few features, XBL and PSN are roughly the same thing to me. I mean, you pop in a game, press down on the controller a couple times until you highlight the multiplayer part of the game, press a button and join a match. It's as elaborate as it should be to play a game online, which is basically the point in having an online portion in any given title.

No. XBL is much more integrated with the 360 library than PSN is with PS3 games.

The one thing that must be considered, is that PS3's TOTAL online services and features extend beyond just PSN. The PS3 has full on internet access for example. Another example is FOLDING @ HOME app. With that, PS3 has more online services and features than XBOX 360....by far.

When it comes to performance they are exactly the same but lots of people still think that XBL has less lag than PSN just because they pay for it when the truth is that each server are directly managed by the company that developed the game and not MS. You don't play online on XBL or PSN, these are just the interface to connect to the game servers.

Still, Live is a ripoff.

I understand what you're saying; however, Live isn't a "ripoff." You pay $50 a year for faster downloads, better online gameplay, and smoother chatting and message sending. Everything feels faster and better with Live.

I'm not saying that you're wrong for saying what you said, I'm merely stating that Live isn't a ripoff. I do feel that it could have more features, true; but is it worth the $50 a year price tag? Yes.

XBL has a few more features that PSN does not but it still don't justify the $60 price tag

It's $50 a year ;) also, those features along with faster downloads and better online gaming, chatting, and messaging makes Live worth it. :)
