Do you watch games on Youtube? (for story)

People always joke about it like "it's a movie game, I'll just watch it on Youtube".

edit: By watching them I mean watching for the whole story instead of playing the game. (not to get tips or for fun on Twitch)

Nope. Doesn’t interest me in the slightest, the fact people try to make money by streaming it blows my mind. I don’t understand why kids love watching other people play games, I guess it’s just an easy stimulant for their brains without having to put in any work or effort on their end.

I get hints on some but I don't just watch a game to watch. I don't bother watching streamers.

Yeah I watch gaming videos on YouTube and games streamed on Twitch. I watch them for various reasons such as seeing what to do if I get stuck or to improve my general playing. Sometimes I like to check them out to see if I’ll enjoy a game myself. Other times I’ll just check them out for general entertainment and for fun. I usually watch this stuff on the side while I’m doing other things or even playing a game myself.

I sometimes watch twitch or youtube videos of games I'm either currently playing and want some pointers for, or am interested in to see if I should buy them. That's as far as it goes.

Usually when it's games I've already played and I just wanna watch a sequence without having to replay the whole game.

hell no. I don't even agree with the practice - as a memory researcher, I can say that interaction (even token) with even simple stimuli strengthens our memory and affective experience of them over just passively viewing. I think that typically mediocre game stories are elevated by participating - even if it's Uncharted or even down to Detroit-style. I wouldn't watch a 5+ hour movie, unless it's a series of nicely done films - why would I strip away an important element for a game's (likely inferior on its own) story delivery?

*edit* don't get me wrong - if you like doing it, more power to you. But for me, my time is precious and if I want to know the story that bad then the game is probably worth my playing it

I find both gaming and watching something pretty mindless, even strategy games. Reading makes me think more and has deeper and longer lasting impression. What's your take on that?

lol no. Most of the time don't even give af about the story in a game I'm playing. Not about to watch somebody else sit through cutscenes.

I haven't thought about that - but one idea is when we read we kind of mentally construct, perhaps not always deliberately, the concepts and sights and sounds (or at least the big ones), instead of just having them fed to us. Maybe it's even more interactive, in that sense, than a movie

Good point, and if your a slow reader like me sometimes you slow down or stop, maybe not deliberately, to think about stuff instead of just getting bombarded by the next scene. "The book is always better than the movie", they say. I don't always agree tho.

I barely or rarely do it if its a game I have no desire to purchase and just let someone do the work for me, than sure I'll do it but that's a rare thing.

But of course, it's no secret I'll just pick the part of the game I'm having trouble figuring out where/how it's supposed to do and go to YouTube and see what I did wrong since Guide Books are dead lol.

Not really, whenever i watch a stream is usually for the personality of the streamer and how they interact with the audience, either that or a competitive game. So if they play an story driven game ... that interaction is reduced a lot so my enjoyment goes down as well, so yeah ... not my cup of tea to watch story driven games on Youtube or Twitch.

Only after I played it. Sometimes there are sequences, moments and cutscenes that I really liked and want to see again, but can't be bothered replaying through the whole game to see them.

I have done it in the past ... but now I'd only do it while working and probably just for games that I have little or no intention of playing. (No commentary ones ... do not want to hear some nitwit constantly blabbering)

I'm trying to think of a game story worth watching.

It happens, but rarely. Most of the times I don't feel like re-playing an old game because of old game mechanics or whatnot but I do want to see the story again. Happened recently with some old AC games that I re-watched on Youtube.

Other than that I do watch some gameplay to get a feel of what a game is like before buying it. But I'm not really following streamers on Twitch or anything of the sort.

If there is a "complete" story ending, then ya. I never 100% games.

When I watch a stream it’s more then just to watch a game being played that I might be interested in. The person or persons have to interact well with the audience and have interesting reactions to what they are playing. It’s also a bonus if they are informative and discuss their thoughts and opinions on the game or other games in general.

I watched The Last of Us on YouTube when I got bored of the gameplay - I enjoyed it. I tried to watch the second one but I thought the story was awful so I skipped to the ending which was awful too. There was another sony game I tried to watch on YouTube (I forget the name - but it’s the one with human looking robots?), which started off good - but then got stupid.

Who needs a playstation when there’s YouTube?

I uninstalled detroit and then watch it on youtube. its C grade movie and im glad i uninstalled it since it was barely even a game. not even a movie game. just a movie with ocassional controlling.

The streaming industry is a huge multi-billion dollar industry. Just from watching streamers play games. I've come to the realization that it's less about the games and more about the streamers. They're like mini-celebrities. The appeal is in watching the streamers play games, their personalities, their interactions with the audience and other streamers, and the occasional banter and drama along the way. Things that usually only happen with multiplayer games. You don't get that same experience from single-player story games.

Maybe if a game has multiple endings and I didn't care for the game.

Isn't Youtube the preferred method of gaming on the PS4?

Only if I'm interested in a Sony exclusive.

Only ever did that with Ico, because the disc was scratched and the game wouldn't progress past the windmill section. Played it years later on the PS3. Then had the account with that game stolen and later broke the PS3 with The Sopranos. Movie games usually aren't interesting enough to watch on YT anyway.

Well when the story is the "best" part of your "game" like Sony's first party titles then cows should save money by watching them on YT.

Yes i know it sounds silly, but when was the last thread by a cow talking about a Sony first party title talking about its gameplay??? I've been here 5yrs and never seen one. I have on the other hand seen many cow threads about scores, sales. graphics & story.

And yet people wonder why people say Sony games are best watched on YT.
