So let's look at what we are giving up to chase that stupid overrated dream:

1- Now, we have to invest in a new console every 3 years

2- Old consoles will be phased out very quickly, believe it or not, in a year, PS4 games will look worse and worse (naturally they should get better) till Sony/MS decides to focus on their new console. Forget all about Sony/MS promises, once these new consoles start to sell, old consoles will die in a year or 2, it is the natural progression.

3- Optimization, probably this is the biggest sacrifice, consoles game will always impress because it is a fixed hardware and developers get more out of it with each single game, with 3 year old cycles, developers will probably have a chance to do a single game and move on to the new generation. Even new consoles will not be used to their full potential because new ones will replace them.

I am not happy at all with how this is going. PS4 at least has really impressed with what was shown during this E3.

4k is an overrated overhyped feature that is being advertised just to sell new TVs and to make those PC nerds feel better about their 1000$ + PCs.

What the hell does what Microsoft and Sony are doing to you knuckle dragging, console slobs have to do with PC gamers?

Kindly leave us out of it. This shit hole is of your own devising.

I think that it's disingenuous to think that anything south of 8TFlops will be sufficient for 4K at anything north of 40fps. Real 4K gen will be PS5 and XBox Two. To be honest, I wasn't sure whether I really wanted Neo or not.

4k is not happening, so there really isn't any sacrifice.

Well, it certainly looks like MS and Sony are going to attempt to adopt an Apple like release cycle. So there posisbly won't be a Playstaiton 5/Xbox Two, but rather the 2018 "New" Playstation (tm) and "new" 2019 Xbox (tm).

And I agree about the power necessary to drive 4K.

I always find it incredibly funny when people on here call other people nerds on a GAMING FORUM

LMAO

It's literally the worst insult you could use on here.

4k is not overrated or overhyped, it's progression. Did people say 1080P was overhyped when they were playing games at 720P? If they did they were wrong.

Only those who have not gamed in 4k call it over hyped.

First people cry over 900p vs 1080p, now 4k is not that good.

loosingENDS did

Back in the PS3 days we had so many graphics threads and a lot of them boiled down to "720p is fine, only hermits care about 1080p"

The generation after Wii U and Xbone were mocked at by Cows because they couldn't do 1080p. Their games were considered not worth playing.

So yeah a lot of people claim "480p/720p/1080p is fine and we don't need expensive new hardware"

I hope 4k is just marketing talk from MS because it would be a silly priority for Scorpio. Much better uses of that extra power and then they can upscale to 4k ofc.

@2mrw: You said PS4 really impressed with what was shown at E3. How so? Nothing even came close to looking as good as UC4, so just what was so impressive about it? You don't think developers would be happy with more raw horsepower when developing games?

8TFlops will be enough for 25 -40 fps and low medium graphics I guesse. And if they optimise it more, who knows?

I mentioned it in another thread but I wonder how many people don't realize that barely any movies made today are even in 4k. Most of the films you see nowadays on those giant screens in the theater are 2k upscaled to 4k. And in turn almost everything on 4k blu ray is 2k upscaled to 4k. Since going largely digital Hollywood works in 2k 90% of the time cuz it's cheaper and easier and hardly anyone notices. Yet gaming is not only going to do native 4k but in real time? I just think it's a huge waste of resources. Native 4k is just not that important. Buttery smooth framerate is a lot more so.

Wait a second, because I remember you putting down X1 for 900p. But now going for higher than 1080 or what the Keannu could possibly muster is bad HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA here we GO folks.

(I actually am just kidding as I don't care)

I'd much rather have high performance than bleeding-edge resolution. The peak gaming experience is 144hz w/ G-Sync (or FreeSync) that eliminates screen-tearing, dropped frames, and slowdown. I'd much rather see a suite of devices that can make that a reality as opposed to 4K capable machines with sub 60fps and technical issues.

Well, I have to agree with this. I never had a 4k monitor or tv (have 1080p monitor and tv) but I had a big crt screen once (22 inch). It was a screen used for autocad and someone gave it to me because he thought tubes were no longer viable (i think this was around 2008-2009), you could find the screen fairly cheap on the second hand market (it was call blue lacie or something) but was probably quite expensive when crt's were still rocking.

I never used the screen until my lcd broke on me (which was around 2010) and I just used it till I found something else. The screen weighed about 60 pounds but it did support crystal clear 2500 X 1600 resolution, which isn't 4k, but still a lot more 1080p. I had a fairly good pc back then and I tried oblivion in that resolution. Now what I saw was far from the 1080p I was playing on. Textures looked much richer and deeper, and looked like a full gen apart.

So yeah I can only imagine how games look in 4k and those who say 4k is overhyped really don't have clue what they're talking about.

It's going to be 4 years or so by the time these consoles release, and this gen is already stagnating... And, let's be honest, they've generally been pretty lackluster so far. The 4K isn't as big of a deal for me, but having something a little more powerful is definitely nice.

No, I'd rather the beefier consoles use that extra power to get more out of a 1080p/60fps standard, shooting for 4K just means they're going to waste extra power that could enhance the games under the standards we were already have.

This is a 5.6 Teraflop 290X running all of these games on their MAXIMUM possible settings at 3200x1800, it will be outclassed and out-performed architecturally by whatever 6~ Teraflop GPU is in Scopio, not to mention it's running on a PC which is in and of itself a less optimizable configuration by default.

Given the fact that consoles don't ever render games at maximum settings, I have no doubt Scorpio will handle 4K perfectly fine in the high to very high range.

NOPE.

But 1080p didn't and COWS went crazy with that.

Now that we have an idea the Keannu is in the Sony closet because of Scorpio, it doesn't matter again.

OH nOES NIPPON is CRYING!!!!!

For a group that demands the best of everything, gamers should do love to hold back innovation when it involves spending money.

3. Optimizations

Loading Video...

Optimizations can scale across different AMD GCN SKUs.

Xbox One has AMD Bonaire type GPU which is ready for incoming DirectX12 Feature Level 12_0's Shader Model 6.

The problem with PC is Intel IGP and NVIDIA GPU support.

Shader Model 6 will kill the entire PC GPUs with DirectX12 Feature Level 11_0 and 11_1. Shader Model 5 killed Shader Model 4 GPUs.

It's unknown if AMD will enabled Shader Model 6 on GCN 1.0 i.e. Tiled Resource problem failed GCN 1.0 to be in Feature Level 12_0.

Remember the jump from SD to 1080p? FHD to 4K is like that. Just wait a year or two, 4k TVs are dropping in price much faster than 3DTVs did.

I'm not trying to be condescending but it's because a lot of the people, especially around here are just cheap console assholes who expect divinity but are not willing to pay for it, also it's not PC gamers, you know where we fit in, we actually understand this stuff and willingly pay the cost of entry.

If they cared about this stuff half as much as they claim to; money wouldn't be an issue because frankly no matter how you dice it it's not a lot of money.

$500? $600? $700? Hell, even $800?

That's not a lot of money, I don't care where you work or what you do, if you want something in that price range you can afford it, the only dynamic factor is how long do you have to save.

Scorpio comes out in 18 months, start fucking saving right now and plan for it being $800, not because it will be but because it's just pre-emptive, smart and if it's less money (it no doubt will be), you will have extra money for games, peripherals, and whatever else.

Anyone complaining about this stuff doesn't care as much as they claim and are simply cheap.
