dark games (made to look dark) hide detail and other things, such as Killzone or Gears
however, more colorful games are easier on the eye, and i like them better, such as Halo 3 or Super Mario
On occasion I get annoyed about a game being too dark. I don't think I ever remember being annoyed by a game being too bright. The darkest I like my games to be is like Resident Evil 4. I don't get why some game designers think it's a good idea to spend all this time on intricate details and such and then make the game so dark that you can't see them.
One thing that I don't like is when game are too bland in their color palette (especially with grays and browns). I want something vibrant with lush colors. This usually happens when games are trying to be realistic, but being realistic doesn't mean to look boring. If you're doing a city, throw in some bill-boards, give the peoples clothes some color, make it autumn so the trees can have some colors instead of some repeated dark shade of green.
