Maybe its just me, but last gen I never tried playing online, some games can play online but I didn't know how to.

This gen, I decided to play online, First with COD4, Sure the online was fun but I still don't see how that got a 9 in here, espescially with the short story it had. (8 at worst).

Sorry if it was just one online game but does anyone agrees with me?

It depends on the game. Does it matter if Bioshock has online: no. Does it matter if Battlefield 2 has online: yes it does.

I think less games should use it and focus on their single player modes.

Depending on the genre Online play has become a standard that is expected and if not delivered better have a killer single player.

FPS: In general these games are more focused on the online than the Single player, it's very rare to see a FPS of value that has no online aspect at all

RPG: has rarely found a use for online with a few exeptions.

Adventure: not much use for online.

Puzzle: Online has been a big part of these games for a while now.

RTS: well obviously online has been a big part.

it all depends on the genre of gaming, certain games are rated on there strongest aspect lets say COD4 the story was not strong but had a very solid online and so that was the focus of the review.

It depends what kind of game it is. But solo is always more important to me than online, the online is just a bonus that i may or not use.

It matters from game to game. In most games, no. Most games have crap online that isn't worth touching. And online play is pretty sub par compared to playing in the same room with your friends. Still, Both CoD4 and MKwii would see a lot less play time from me if it weren't for online.

The way I look at it...IF im going to spend 50$ a year on LIVE, I want my games to use it. I dont care if its fps or whatever as long as the games use it.

For me, so long as the single player is solid, it doesn't matter.

Yes, for games like Gears of War, and COD 4 since they are shooters and if they had crappy online then I wouldn't really enjoy them as much.

Imo, i love online in games. Half the time i dont even play story. When you get that killing rampage online, and people are swearing at you, nothing can compare.

I don't care what it does well

Offline
Online
Sp
Multiplayer
COOP
System Link

I don't care

I only care that it is an overall quality experience

In the case of Halo 3 and COD 4 the quality is on MP same with other games like Battlefield 2 and such

In the case of Bioshock, Portal, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Crysis it is about Single Player

In the case of Left 4 Dead it is about COOP

I just care that what the game is designed best for it can perform at a quality level in said area.

I agree. Sure some games should always have online like racing, fighting, and sports games, but games like GTA and Arkanoid should stay out of it imo.

It really does depend on the game, like some other people are saying. Cod 4 definitely relies heavily on MP. I played the SP for about 5 to 6 hours, but I'll be playing the online aspect for years to come. Once you get a regular group of friends that you play online with, and have friendly/competitive matches with other teams it makes the online replay go through the roof. I suggest you try meeting people online and keep playing with them if you want to see what the fun is all about.

I don't care about online, I never play online. Local multiplayer is good for some games, and co-op mode is nice too, but those are getting pretty rare... So NO, online games suck and I don't need them.

Quality singleplayer > generic multiplayer.

It depends on the type of online.. if you mean online multiplayer no not all games need it. Sport, Racing, Shooting, and other competitive do need it though. However RPGS, action games, and other games where single player is the most important feature don't neceserilly need it but downloadable content and online multiplayer is always a good bonus unless it takes away from the games single player experience. Heavenly Sword would have been extra awesome if you could have a crossbow shootout.

that's because they have short liner single player modes. fps with decent replay value in sp the online isn't really important, but nice to have. crysis has more replay value in the sp than the mp cod4 maps. cod4 mp gets boring pretty fast with its limited amount of similar maps

I don't care about online at all. They should work on better single-player experiences than counting on online multiplayer to save them.

Depends which game it is.

GTA's multiplayer is kind of tacked-on and seems last minute. I really don't play it much at all. Sure, they have online, but did it really need it? If they had tacked online onto something like Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Devil May Cry, it may not have worked so well.

I guess it depends on the game. Some games like COD4, Halo3, GeoW, Resistance, etc. (shooters generally) pretty much need online now in order to be considered a good game. What if those mentioned games didn't have online? I think they would pretty much suck and be worthless.

I'm much happier playing with real friends, not just some guy somewhere over the internet

online = more replayability for months for 60 shells which = WORTH

no online = beat 2 or 3 times and done, there goes your 60 shells somewhere.

for me, a game must have good SP. no good SP then i dont care. i wont look at it...wont even read a review.

after that.....i dont really care to be honest. MP and online functionality are not high on my agenda at all. if a game has a good SP but fundimentally broken MP then ill still certainly have a look.

Hmm... sometimes. Great online play can make a game much better, especially if it has a sucky campaign mode, (*cough* CoD4 *cough*) although if a game is still excellent on its own single-player merits then I couldn't care less about not being able to play it online.

depends if the game was made to be online or not. sometimes online is just a little more than a luxury. single player is where it's at for most games, and it's a shame that some games have too much focus on online play, resulting in less focus on single player meaning that the single player experience will be degraded in favor of multiplayer.
