In a bunch of ways, crackdown actually is better. Actually has a smooth framerate. Which is one thing I wonder. Why does everybody go on about mercenaries 2 framerate, while gta4 has an absolute terrible framerate? Rarely ever does 30fps, and usually stays at the low 20s.
Its framerate isn't great, true enough, but that's the price of quality. GTA IV is one of the best looking games this generation, not because of technical marvels (although it's no slouch in that department) but because of the smaller details. I've never seen a more meticulously detailed city environment in any game I've ever played. It captures the look and feel of New York like no other game has ever done or even come close to in my opinion.
Maybe when the pc version comes out, and IF I play this game again, I'll give it another chance.
Though, the driving controls were pathetic this time around. Trying to feel more real? It wasn't real, or close to it. It was just sluggish. When you go fast in gran turismo, theres ways to make good turns. Not in this game. Thats why I loved san andreas, its driving felt very, very good.
If you can't make turns at a decent speed in this game, then you're doing it wrong. Perhaps this is just my experience playing simulation racers (IE dozens of hours of Forza 2) talking but once I got used to the new system, I started to love it. No, it's not easy to whip an SUV around corners like it was in San Andreas and no, every car doesn't handle like it was built by Ferrari, but that's one of the reasons why I love this game, each car has its own individual handling quirks and for me, part of the fun was figuring out these quirks in each of the many vehicles in the game.
Story wasn't that great this time around either.
I thought this was one of the better stories in the series (it's either this or San Andreas) but I've never felt like I was interacting with a real character like I have with Niko. The choices I made felt like they had real weight, and I couldn't help but feel empathy for Niko and his troubled past and how he wrestled with his own personal demons for many years before the events of the game.
