no if anything consoles are teaching devs how to push great physics out when you have limited resources. So when it comes time to dev for a system with unlimited resources like pc they can do even better.
plus devs like money and piracy =/= money
The only reason console games look as good as they do is because they have standard hardware and developers can literally squeeze everything out of them; and they are still technically inferior to PC visuals. If PC games didn't need to use graphical API's such as DirectX, visuals would be phenomenal. It'll never happen though because the basis of the PC platform is openness and choice, so your first point is rather null and void. And your second point is just ignorant. The PC industry was the most profitable last year, surely if "every PC gamer pirates", that wouldn't be the case?no if anything consoles are teaching devs how to push great physics out when you have limited resources. So when it comes time to dev for a system with unlimited resources like pc they can do even better.

No, not at all. About the only thing that consoles can't do that PCs can is better graphics. If devs work hard at something, they can translate just about any games pure gameplay over to consoles without making any sacrifices beyond graphics, but often don't because it takes more work. Thats why I am a little dissapointed that Bioware changed the gameplay dynamics with Dragon Age on consoles. They could have better translated the experience, but tried to make it different.
I believe the expansion of consoles is holding the PC back. A lot of former PC developers are abandoning the platform or designing specifically for consoles and porting the game over to PC. It feels as if each year we are getting less and less games designed with a PC crowd in mind. I am growing tired of playing games that I can tell with one look that the PC market was an after thought. Infinity Ward is quite guilty of this with the newest Call of Duty....the PC version feels like the only thing they really did to change it from the consoles was make a small IWnet symbol in the top left corner of the screen during matchmaking.
Or Devs could just give something a quick port to a random console for moneyno if anything consoles are teaching devs how to push great physics out when you have limited resources. So when it comes time to dev for a system with unlimited resources like pc they can do even better.

No pc is held back by its own market. Its to expensive to make games that look as good or better then crysis just for one market . Consoles make over 70% of the money in gaming . pc is a good size market however .most people still cant run high end games well and there is a massive about of torrent people stealing games .
Someone didn't learn his lesson form the other thread..."too expensive" haha!No pc is held back by its own market. By the way Aku101 ur a stupid cow, PC isnt holding the PS3 back since PS3 already went to its limits in graphics
I don't know if I like the way you've worded it, but I do kind of feel that PC development isn't focused on as heavily as it would be if consoles weren't offering such a similar experience (leaving aside the fact that they are mopping up in the profits department).
Back in the day, there were "PC games", which were the cutting-edge, adult games that pushed the boundaries of graphics, sound, innovation, depth and realism, and "Console games", which were graphically limited games that were fun and usually simple..
Now, there is less and less of a gap between what each platform offers and there is often a tremendous amount of overlap. Genres that didn't used to exist on consoles are now thriving.
Not only does this have an impact on the the industry itself, it should also indicate that being a PC snob makes a lot less sense than it did 10-15 years ago. ;)
pc gaming is boring u gotta sit in a chair use a keyboard and mouse which is not fun, only games i like on it are sims and wow u have to worry about ram and all the other stuff that comes withthe pc . everytime i try to play wow or sims sonething is allways messing up
id rather get a MAC everything is simple , pc is a headache for me
Hmmm if the consoles hold PC back? hard to say, the thing I think holds console games back from being more complex and finely tuned, is the controllers, theyre fine but they lack enough buttons to have an advanced control scheme.
What I DO think holds PC back (from a gaming standpoint) is that most devs aim for the broadest spectrum of customers, which by default means the lowerst common nominator, lets face it there is ALOT of not too bright people out there... making sure they are on the bandwagon of "the oh so complex world of videogames" is to make sure everything is "streamlined" ie. dumbed down so much that games practically plays themselves now.
On a purely hardware side then... yes! a whole lot of games can not be as complex or big in scale as most devs want them to because of the fairly limeted hardware of the consoles.
Overall if you ment games (Im sure you did, its a gamingsite afterall) then its not the consoles per say,but the broad marketing, heck most consolites dislike the dumbing down this gen.
If anything it's the PC that's holding consoles back.

theres still 'pc games' just admittadly a lot less. its more devs realising 'hey we can make a simplistic experience that requires little to no work, market the **** out of it and sell millions' instead of actually taking the time to craft a true pc experience. its really 'lazy' devs trying to maximize profits.
the other issue of pc games going top consoles is kind of the same. developers can release COD on the consoles and sell millions because the core experience is fairly simple. and the FPSs isnt over sturated on the consoles. console gamers really have seen few good FPSs. most things console gamers claim as innovative and new are features standard in pc games for decades.
the actual experience though is a different story. the console experience can be fully replicated on a pc. its a closed simple platform. in reality the only defining factor between the consoles is the controler. the experience doesnt change. if you were playing KZ2 on a 360 with a ps3 controller you wouldnt notice a difference (hypothetical assuming KZ2 is done on the 360). hell if someone played zelda through their pc and gave you a NES controller you wouldnt know it was on the pc unless they told you.
this isnt true of the pc experience. the pc experience can be summed up with one word. 'choice'. you have the choice in almost everything with pc gaming, everyone has a different experience, there isnt a set experience that you can say this is representative of pc gaming. the consoles are trying to replicated the openness of the pc platform on a closed system and failing pretty hard.
Even if there were no consoles, I don't think Crysis would have sold well. It was too much too soon. There is a threshold that people aren't willing to cross when it comes to gaming hardware expense. donalbane
except even with consoles and piracy crysis still sold more than most console games

i sit on a couch or bed and for everything but FPSs, RTS, and TPSs i use a controller. ive never needed to worry about ram or anything at least no more than id have to worry about getting a new console for a game, and im playing games like NBA 2k10,dragon age, mirrors edge,FF8,oblivion, crysis, STALKER,shattered horizon, the witcher, system shock 2, simpsons hit and run, KOTOR, battlefront, CODMW2, far cry, audio surf. SF4, and GTA4
Agreed... I started back last gen with Deus Ex and Thief 3, being made for xbox and ported to the pc... Then it happened with Obliivion (compare The depth morrowind had to Oblivion and you will see ... this isn't even about graphics its about depth, pc games have more console games are simpler using hand holding techniques like compass points, fast travel, level scaling, limited armor, limited choice....etc... all things past elderscrolls had. Then there is Unreal 3 they dropped the Tornament part and rehashed gears of war models , made the best online arena game into a pile of dog doo. No Server browser, console style ui..it was a mess.. then infinity ward, and m$ killing off Ensemble, and Aces even though they made million selling games on the pc. Their reason by I hate the pc shane kim : "These developers are too pc focused and don't fit in with our Casual Xbox focused plan for the future." i was pissed when i read that!!!! And prior to that was the closure of looking glass, troika , new world computing, westwood, origins, and black isle, all the famous PC rpg devs getting killed... You would of thought that Bioware would of stayed to take on the market by itself...nope. Even after sellling multi-million copies of Baldur's gate 1 and 2, kotor, they go and make a X-box Only game and then mass effect a X-box 360 exclusive at first (stupid m$!!!) and then port to pc.. MS porting Halo 2 to pc thinking that pc gamers will like it even though it was 4 years old and from an inferior platform they made it vista only. M$ really hurt the pc the most!!! Making Direct X 10 vista only.. crippled the pc gaming tech , as devs were forced and still are forced to stay with direct x 9 an APi from spec made back in early 2003!
Back in the day games were made on pc and ported to console in dumbed down console frinedly versions, now pc gamers get the shaft..the micro$haft treatment of not getting many exclusives and getting 360 ports. It sucks PC gaming used to be enough for me that I didn't need a console (after ps1 phased out, as that console was too epic with the rpgs!!!!) This gen i had to get a console to suppliment my gaming pc and after doing research and my past love for the ps1 brought me right to the ps3 in 2008. Now I mainly play on the ps3 unless a pc exclusive comes out and it's not a sports manager, or mmo....which is rare these days :(
It's not all about high end games though... look at games like baldurs gate and diablo 2 back in the day.. they weren't even using 3d engines and were direct draw 2d... and they sold , they were complicated and full of depth...something that a lot of console games lack... (demon souls / Dragon Age Excluded) but they don't even make those games anymore. Age of Empires one of the great est rts done.. When was the last Civilization game on pc? 2004/5 same with Heroes of Might and magic, turn based strategy == dead :( and Blizzard , Which imo made the pc market take a big hit as millions were only playing wow and not buying other games... It also made it so the sequel to the most amazing ARPG Diablo 2 still hasn't got a sequel out yet in over a decade as they haven't released anything besides wow in that time. There are so many factors to this... read my previous post.No pc is held back by its own market. Its to expensive to make games that look as good or better then crysis just for one market . Consoles make over 70% of the money in gaming . pc is a good size market however .most people still cant run high end games well and there is a massive about of torrent people stealing games .

/facepalm..... This is why they made dumbed down console games last gen and it was people like this that the devs started suffering from "CONSOLITIS." Pretty much the same thing happened to me :/. I was a PC only gamer from about half way through the n64 gen to this gen without any desire whatsoever to own a console. The pickin's were getting real slim as the 2000's rolled on by so I picked up a PS3 at launch for the BC, and a gamecube for pennies on the dollar to play the likes of metroid prime and SSBM (Gamecube surprised the heck out of me with the quality games it had, and I got them all for dirt cheap after it was discontinued.)I await the day when devs begin to push the envelope like they did all throughout my gaming career on the PC. I remember playing mind blowing games like DOOM, X-wing, the latter King Quests, X-coms and other classics while others where cutting their teeth on 8/16bit consoles. The PC quality gap over consoles was tremendous. Now dumbing down for consoles is par for course and its taken a bit of my gaming enthusiasm with it.

Funny I play most of my PC games from the couch with a wireless 360 controller hooked up my 52 inch HDTV. Funny since I also built the PC myself it's so much more powerfull then ANY MAC (LOL!) in it's price range. Funny that my 4 gigs of ram is sufficient for any game on the market, and my GTX 280 makes your consoles look pathetic.
Funny what knowing how to use all of the options a pc provides you can do.
Funny since I also can play any damn game (all consoles games included, eventually) since the inception of video games, and new games (except for COD MW2) all cost at least $10 less.
Funny that your ignorance is bliss.

Yep... the good ole days of pc gaming.. I remember owning 2x cd drive on a 386 pc with soundblaster32 , and 1mb svga card back in the early 90's playing Ultima underworld at full speed, Wing Commander 2 with full voice acting on the cd rom (man that was awesome back then as no game really did that for almost a decade after! ) Might and magic 4 and 5 joined togeather when you owned both to form a huge over and underworld... it was a massive rpg and when you owned both and put them togeather it opend up a whole new gate to another world... X-wing was so freakin cool..best space sim for its time... thats a genre that could use a come back! Kings Quest, Police quest, Quest for Glory, Liesure suit larry, flashback, x-com, doom, wolf -3d, civ, Gold Box D & D, Ultima 7, man those days rocked for pc games!*Hanners sign into ground* DON'T FEED THE TROLL!If anything it's the PC that's holding consoles back.

Nothing is holding the PC back. It is the lazy ass devs that do not want to invest in furthering the PC platform because they can just make a crappy game for console and make millions.
Im confused? So all these years I have been playing crappy games? I honestly had no idea at all.Nothing is holding the PC back. It is the lazy ass devs that do not want to invest in furthering the PC platform because they can just make a crappy game for console and make millions.
SF_KiLLaMaN
There are aspects to PC games which are affected regardless of hardware power and cost.
For instance PC can support much larger scale games because of high memory. Consoles are heavily reliant on streaming small amounts of information, so while they can simulate large environments using cells; the area the player is currently in is small scale. The game image is also quite bloated on consoles, the game is designed to be played at a distance; so everything is made big.
There is also interface design, PC game interfaces tend to be more complex but unpractical on consoles. A good example of this would be the Morrowind interface compared to the Oblivion one.
So there are aspects of game design on PC that get held back because of console orientation, cost dependant areas are mostly limited by the industries current climate.
I wonder how many people were actually dumb enough to say yes.
Consoles don't develop games so no, it doesn't hold PC back. If the developers chose to dumb down the PC version to make it the same as the console version, it's the developers fault. Developers also blow the whole piracy issue out of proportion, so again, it falls on the developer.
crytek has said crysis has sold over 3 million copies world wide and that was back in 2008 with the added sales from the maxium edition probably 3.5-4 millioncrytek was expecting to sell 10 million there exceptions where far to high. Also, the reason Crytek went multiplat in the first place is piracy on the PC.
TREY_FOR_LI4E

ThePRAssassin
They don't dumb down the PC version, there would have to be more there that they took away for it to be dumbed down. They simply take the game they developed to run on the lowest common denominators (consoles) and copy it over to PC.
So it's not so much removing something as not adding something. Of course as we have noted in recent years that is starting to change, hardware companies need to sell their latest tech; and they are funding the upgrade of games to justify them.
