Does Gears of war 2 have a chance at GOTY?

I, don't think so. The first one was great! It had cutting edge graphics, but 2 years later, things have changed. With games the look better than gears like Uncharted, Crysis and MGS4 gears isn't exactly the beautiful eye candy that it was when it first released.The 360 isn't getting any younger and neither is the engine that powers gears of war 2, but Epic has maneged to squeeze a little more juice out of the 360 and the end result looks pretty good.

Graphics aren't everything, story is becoming more and more important this gen. Story is something the first gears didn't exactly do well. Not only did it last 6 hours, but by the time the ending came arount there were plot holes the size of Texas. If gears 2 has the same non existent story, there's gonna be a problem. Now gameplay wise there is not going to be a problem here, gears gameplay is fantastic.

So with GTA4 and MGS4 getting solid 10s,and StarCraft 2 and Spore on the way I just don't see Gears of War 2 winning. Will it be a great game? Yes! But will it be the game of the year? Most likely no. IMO

I think MGS4 and GTAIV have the best chance, but Gears 2 hasnt even came out yet. It'll be a nominee for sure, I think anyway.

Agreed. The two titles you mentioned are extremely heavy hitters, and a sequel of a game that has already come out this generation is going to have a tough time with that. It's going to be harder to improve on.

Yes, but GTA4 ar exceeded expectations and scored massively high scores and has essentially rejuvinated the series for many gamers. MGS4 is the "last" MGS game. So not only did it exceed expectations and get massive scores, but it may benefit from hindsight. Kind of like how Lord of the Rings won all those oscars...but only after all the movies were out. They act like the last movie won, but really they were awarding the oscar for the whole series and using the last as an excuse.

THen you have new, innovative games like Spore which are pretty much guaranteed to be huge.

Gears 2 just doesn't cut it. It is a sequal and the first game already won the awards and praise. Expectations are already sky high so exceeding them is highly doubtful. Plus from everything I've seen of the game, it doesn't look to really add or change much from the formula or bring anything new to the table.

I dunno about GOTY but I think it will be a contender, the graphics will improve a lot and I think the story will be better.

Second: Gears 2 is going up against 2 solid 10s, a sequel to one of the greatest RTS's ever made(starcraft 2) and a game that just might be one of the greatest games ever made(SPORE) Gears of war 2s chances of winning are slim, thats all I'm saying.

Yep. It will undoubtedly be between these four.

Although, Far Cry 2 could potentially sneak in there as a candidate depending on how masterful it turns out. I think it's quite possible, actually. If that fifth spot is between Far Cry 2, Gears 2 and Resistance 2, I'd put my money on FC2. Or STALKER: Clear Sky. One of those two.

Seeing all the competition this year... doubt it. Not just talking GTA4 or MGS4, but other titles like Spore or Fable 2.

Gears of War 2 seems to be in a rut of just a standard shooter sequel new weapons, new enemies, new friends and new maps.

Not saying it will be bad, but there's nothing OMFG that seperates it from Gears of War 1 so far, tbh.

It has a chance but a better chance at soty.

Also 10's doesn't mean goty in fact it doesn't happen much. But I would still put my money on mgs4 if I had to guess right now.

its going to be hard because it has to compete with two 10s...but it has a chance because who says it wont get a 10 as well. I dont think it will because the story will probably leave something to be desired..but the first one was my favorite MP game this gen and still is...

as for the graphics...you know the graphics still have time to be improved right? you make it sound like they are cutting and pasting the first games graphics into the 2nd...so far the videos of gears 2 looks on par with most of the games out now...so i dont think graphics will be a factor...it will need a better story and have to try to do new things the 1st one didnt to avoid the "we have done this before" curse
