I think so. UK seems to always be left behind in the gaming industry. They always in Catch up mode. Prime example. Go to US and Jpn PSN Store and they have a lot of content on it, but go to UK PSN store and it's dry to the bone.

Europe has always been shunted to the back of the line behind the US and Japan.

Definitely. For example;

  • There is still no sign we will get the Xbox 360 Elite.
  • Minimum of 5 days later release date for all games. General 2 to 4 weeks later release.
  • Everything costs more.

Yea, pretty much. I think it's because Europe hasn't given the gaming world any really major gaming contributions. America has Atari, Japan has Nintendo (and everything else :P), and Europe has...Ninja Gaiden for the Sega Master System :?.

Not just less attention, jacked-up prices, too. That goes for us Australians also, unfortunately, and I hear it's even more costly in New Zealand. We're used to it by now, but it's still damn annoying.

Not to mention games are generally released here in fewer quantities from what I've seen, so it's harder to Ebay up our region-specific version of games (especially older/rarer titles like Rez, which I'm currently looking for).

Maybe all the European countries should join as on big country so their trading policies won't force all imports to be like 2x as much as the product in its homeland.

Beside the fact that PC-parts are like 25-50% more expensive here in europe.. And that games are released later.

that's because of Vat :( Still, they're mostly about 30$ cheaper than console ones. And games might be released later, but not all and delay is mostly very short. On the other hand games like The longest Journey, Port Royale, Call of Juarez or Gothic2 were released in US a year after Europe releases. Such long delays are rare, but US launch 6 months after Euro launch is quite common. GTR, GTR 2, SIlent Storm, Port Royale, Armed Assault Nexus, GT Legends or Spellforce. Actualy majority of Euro games launch later in US than in Europe.

Actually most PC games now are released simulataniously between Europe and the US. Except for the European developed games which oftern see very delayed release or no release at all in the US. This opposed to us still not having a release date for Paper Mario or Elite beat agents and waiting nigh on 6 months for the launch of the PS3. MS is actually quite a bit better than the other two console makers. Their games typically come out within weeks rather than months of the US release.

PC games in Europe are actually much closer in cost to their US counter parts than Console games.

We the european gamers get less or atleast later attention than Japan/US.

Why? mainly because there are so many different languages in Europe. The devs feel that they need to include menus and game directions in all major languages.

English/Spanish/German/Italian/French and thats just for starters. There is a gazillion other languages aswell ,and in many of these countries the gamers are not up to date on their english. Or that is atleast what the devs and destributors think.

Either the citizens of other countries in Europe besides teh UK of course need to better their knowlage of English (that is if they really need to), or we the parts of Europe that have no problems with that language (Scandinavia) will have to continue to play the waiting game along with our friends from Great Britain........

that might very well be true. I guess it is easier to notice when you are forced to wait for a game to release here since you see the rewiev on this site and so on. When a game is released here first I'm generally busyplaying it instead :p

Too true. Plus the fact that Gamespot generally wont post the review untill it in approaching the US release date.

Well, yeah, they do. And there is, unfortunately, a solid economic reason behind that.
The reason is standardization. In Japan you have one nation operating under one set of guidelines. Same with the United States. But in Europe, you have a multitude of nations with a multitude of different languages, laws, etc etc.

It's gotten better lately with more standardization via the EU, but still a problem, and an unfortunate one for the European gamer.

Or, at least that's my hypothesis.

Probalem lies in out TVs. We use the PAl format whilst the US and Japan use NTSC.

For something like the DS and PSP however I can see no reaosn why your suggestion wouldn't work.

Um, if swapmagic (l use it for imports) will convert any NTSC signals to PAL, l really don't think it can be a particularly complicated process that would cause such huge delays.

well yea that is true but how long does it take to change the signal from NTSC to PAL? they dont really have to wait until all the other translations have been finished.

Nah not at all, same goes for the netherlands we are practically spoonfed the english language so with the exception of games with a really young target audience were in the same boat.

Its not just an option, in some of those languages it is stated in the law that multimedia has to include theyr language.
Also in some countries (like france) people are very chauvenistic and eventough they know the other language they are still reluctant to use that knowledge.
As a english tourist you will be suprised how many people will simply ignore you despite knowing english well enough (education in france is up to the standarts afterall.)
