This last week has been awesome in the Bioware foruns with the annoucement of ME3's multiplayer component.
.
Never before I've seen so much rage online. Haters hated, whinners whinned and normal people argued. It's pretty interesting how some people reacted to what in my view is a good improvement to one of the best, if not the best, series this generation.
.
That said, one thing really cought my attention. A lot of people were saying they were cancelling their pre-orders and although I think this is dumb, I can retionalize it. But from this group a few people went even further and said they were cancelling they The Old Republic pre-order.
.
Now that is impressive. Do people actually do this? Cancel pre-orders to get back on developers? On because some broken and twisted "code of ethics" was attacked (in this case because of ME3's multiplayer)? Some people even said they wouldn't buy EA games anymore.
.
I can only hope they were lying.

Nothing wrong with it. People except a singleplayer game with no multiplayer and then this hits. It is going to annoy some people to the point of not wanting to support that company any more. I know that is how I felt with the whole online only Diablo 3 when I played 2 by myself a majority of the time.

That's the only way to get a developers attention. They are making the game to make money, and if enough people cancel their pre-orders, then the company needs to make changes in order to obtain their primary goal, e.g. make more money.

ME3 has online!!!!, I hate games that allow multiple players, time to cancel my preorder for an MMO. The logic is pretty sound.

The only thing is that 95% of the people who say/do that end up buying the game anyway, so it doesn't really matter much.

A lot of people do this. People did this with the BF3 beta too. I can't tell you how many times I heard " OMG there's bugs in the beta? Preorder cancelled! " It's also funny when people do it to games like Mass Effect. Obviously they're big fans of the game to post in the forums, so why would they not get the game if they are fans of the first two because of an added multiplayer feature?

Uh, people aren't cancelling their preorders of ME3 to "get back at" Bioware for their choices with the game, they are doing so because they don't like what they are hearing so they don't want the game anymore.

It's not a revenge thing, it's a "Why the hell would I buy something that sounds like ass?" thing.

To be fair, most people didn't expect the beta graphics to look like absolute crap.

That's just dumb. Just because one of the Bioware teams is doing something with a game that you don't like doesn't mean you should screw yourself out of another game you're excited for just because it says Bioware on it.

I really don't understand this mentality. If someone is excited for a game and preorders it, but as information comes out about it they become less and less excited for it, why should they keep their preorder?

It's not like they can't buy the game after it comes out if it does come out good, and it certainly makes more sense not to give them the benefit of the doubt if you dislike everything you hear about the game.

Yes, but they still cancelled even after it was confirmed many times that the graphics in the beta were not final. Even if you tried to tell them that they would refuse to listen.

It depends on the situation. Why someone excited for ME3 should cancel the pre order cause theres an optional(keyword) MP.

Because they might think the devs took resources away from the campaign just to make the mp portion. The end result could be a lacking campaign that was sacrificed for a tacked-on mp.

I was skeptical at first, but then they assured me they built a studio in Montreal (IIRC) that is specifically looking at this stuff while the main studio in Vancouver is still doing what they were doing without having to do multiplayer component themselves. I'm now sure it will still have a great single player component and perhaps surprisingly capable multiplayer campaign as well. Kinda like Assassin's Creed.

Anyways back on topic, people talk smack on in the internet, namely over games is nothing new but it does seem to get worse and worse.

I canceled my preorder thanks to it. I've said all along I would if any kind of multiplayer were implemented in ME3 since the rumors of it surfaced months ago.

What was once my favorite series this generation is now completely irrelevant to me.

Now that's a perfectly legitimate excuse, and the reason I'm not going to preorder Mass Effect. I've kinda lost faith in Bioware actually making a good RPG.

Now that's pretty ****ing stupid. If the MP isn't a major component to the game, then skip it all together. You shouldn't cancel your pre-order just because there's something non-essential you don't like, even when the rest of the game looks good. Nor should you boycott the dev as a whole because of it.
