In some areas they are definently one of the better companies, TVs for example. In other areas they are pretty average, like MP3 players.

I might as well answer the question. I prefer Samsung for my TVs, Sony hardly makes the best computers, the don't make the best radios... so how do they make the best electronics again???

I'd say, other than their entire Playstation line, Sony makes EXCELLENT electronics. I have a 36" Wega, and I absolutely LOVE that TV. I just upgraded to a new LCD, but I won't part with that Wega - it weighs about 3 million pounds, but the picture is still PERFECT!!!!

Its the wrong forum because you are not talking about a video game system... which if you read the SYSTEM wars rules you would relaize is what this forum is supposed to be used for.

I prefer Nintendo for my gaming, Pioneer for my TVs, JVC for my camcorders, Canon for my still cameras, Apple for my computers, Apple for my mp3 players, Onkyo for my home theater...... I don't prefer Sony for anything, but they do make some quality products in many different areas.

Sony electronics havent been good or great since the late 80's or early 90's. Since then they have always been a day late and a dollar short on innovation, performance, reliability and price. The Playstation 1 and 2 was the last of the remaining greatness of the juggernaut electronics company named Sony.

On a side note the PS3 falls in line with Sony's current electronic offerings of being overpriced, underperformance, and completely out of touch with the flow of the industry...

Playstation is a very good product, as are all of sony's things even though they are more expensive than thier counterparts there is a very very LOW failure rate on sony products compared to other companies.

Sony doesnt know what the term "industry leader" means unless you mention the PS1 and PS2. Otherwise they are struggling to survive in markets they once dominated with a iron fist. Why do you think the PS3 was created as a gumbo pot of technology? Its purpose is to rejuvenate the Sony corporation as a whole, not solely to benefit gaming.

i dont think they are struggling..they had a revenue of $70.303 billion..so it must be selling good..and they were number 8 in the list of sales leaders in 2007..

The problem isn't the revenue.. its the fact that the net profit on that revenue has been extremely low for the past few years, even going negative many times.

Revenue means nothing. It's all about the margin, and right now, Sony actually is struggling in a lot of markets. They just dropped their rear-projection lines, for example.

I didnt say Sony was closing shop, but they arent the industry leader in electronics. The competition is strong and Sony is merely a player these days, not the innovating force that had the world in the palm of its hands.

Lol. Really? I stricly buy sony products because they NEVER break on thier own. It always takes me or some other moron in my house to break them and even with hard falls, water spills, surges they still work like a charm. Please fan boi crap aside, unless you really had a bad expierence with them don't spew that. Sony failure rate on thier products is one of the lowest for a company that makes SO many things.

Sony has always been a solid electronics company. They do not excel at anything, though. I believe that their main competitor Samsung make better TVs than Sony do (Samsung TVs also have a 3 yr manufacturers warranty, Sony has 1 yr). Sony don't make the best cameras, or PCs or audio players, though the Walkman was amazing all those years ago. Problem with Sony is that they try to introduce crazy new formats/ideas all the time and ultimately end up messing things up: MD disk, UMD etc.

Sony's durability used to be very good, but now... not so good. They have expensive and very fragile products. I often find Sony products to be far too overpriced these days.

I was once a "all Sony" consumer. But after a Betamax (yes I had one!!!), stereo systems, vcrs, cd players and even a PS1 all go belly up I took a chance and broke the Sony cycle and never looked back.

Lets see... I have a Sony sound system, a Sony alarm clock (which is almost as old as I am), and Sony Reader. All have served me fairly well. Though I am considering selling the Reader and getting a Amazon Kindle to replace it.

Umm, I've always thought the computers were a rip. My Dad used to own one, and there wasn't really anything special about it IMO (I think it actually died the soonest, compared to his other systems).

Well Sony once held the title of having the most ergonomic products available. Now they produce oblong, abstract pieces of work that are forgettable is a market dominated by Apple, Dell and HP.

Its right you are burned by an brand atleast once, I used to believe that all TVS we're inferior to RCA tv's but sadly they went to the crapper, I mean hell this is RCA they literally created the TV, and alot of the innovation in the electronics industry and went to crap, they're HDTV's suck compared to all others, they're SDTVS suck compared to all others, their remotes...ect all suck any more.

My tv of choice now is Samsung and even they sucked, I had to return this Tv 2 times before i got one that wasn't broken and worked right.

Sony is generally my Goto co for electronics, I've yet to own a product of thiers that has failed to dissapoint me. I also have a feeling Sony is getting on the up and up of there game, I know they have been mediocre the last while but I still have faith. There products still preform admirably.

Not by a long shot, but they are definitely better than what you'd find in Wal-Mart.
