Do you guys think that the variety of games on the 360 has gotten rid of the "360 only has shooters" argument or do you believe that the top rated games on the console in the future will be shooters?

I personally think 360 does have more of a variety of game genres than the original Xbox did but I don't think it's reached that stage where people don't think of shooters mainly when they think of a 360. I still think the Playstation brand name has a stronger variety of games but I can see MS working their way up.

I definitely think the "only shooters" argument has declined because of games like Lost Odyssey, Banjo Threeie, Forza 2 and Blue Dragon. Then again, when you look at the best upcoming 360 games, Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Bioshock seem to top most lists.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Does the 360 "only shooters" argument still apply or is it no more?

Ever since launch it never has. Kameo and PGR3 completely destroy the argument.

probably not. but i only got mine for the shooters, and very little of anything else interests me (not cause i dont like microsoft or the 360. if it does interest me i might as well get it) anyway, my 360 and my pc are my shooter consoles (well im no sure what pc is classified as) but the 360 does have a bigger variety of games now.

CLARIFICATION: I didnt mean the 360 has a larger variety than pc. pc still has the most. besieds party games

Considering the only anticipated 360 FPS is Halo 3, whereas there is: Lost Odyysey, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Cry On and Infinite Discovery on the RPG front, NO.

It definitely has a lot more variety now. The only good EXCLUSIVE shooters at the moment are Gears and GRAW2. Plenty of variety now as the OP mentioned.

It's got a better variety than the xbox, and I like shooters anyway. With all the great shooters plus other great games, I'm perfectly happy.

That argument is just fanboys grasping for straws. It carries about as much weight as the "Wii is teh kiddy" argument. The Xbox 360 has many, many great games that aren't shooters. Kameo and Elder Scrolls come top mind.

In all reality though you have to agree that most stereotypes are true for the most part (but not the ENTIRE part) I mean to say that 360 has only shooters is obviously not true.  But to say that it has a lot of shooters and does (or will) have more shooters than the other consoles is probably not false.  Also same can go to the Wii.  To say ALL Wii games are kiddy is not true, but to say that the console does (or will) have more "kiddie-type" games than other consoles is probably not false.  It's just each console catering to it's audience and that's where the stereotypes come from.

I don't consider Mass Effect a shooter. But yeah, the 360's best games are shooters. I don't mind it, because I like shooters. And, the 360 still has enough variety for me to keep me playing.

*clears throat*

6 out of the top 10 games on the Xbox460 are shooters

Shooters sales are 3 to 1 for other genres on the Xbox360

Since the Debut of XBL shooters has been the number one game played on it.

Key Franchise that represents the Xbox is a shooter.

Shooters has the highest attach rate than any other genre on Xbox360.

I think it justified to call it a "shooter console"

When a console's flagship series is FPS, it's probably expected that you're going to get a proportionally larger amount of them than other systems. That said though, it looks like the 360 is getting several excellent new IPs for different genres, many of them exclusive. I think the whole '360 is mostly shooters' stigma is partly due to how fanatically keen people (particularly Xbox/Microsoft fans) are for Halo 3, in my opinion. It's arguably the most anticipated game for the system by far.

Absolutely not, Right now if I were to list my top 10 360 games they would be:

  1. Rainbow Six Vegas
  2. Oblivion
  3. Gears of War
  4. Dead Rising
  5. NHL 07
  6. PGR 3
  7. Rockstar Table Tennis
  8. GRAW
  9. Splinter Cell Double Agent
  10. Crackdown

Only 3 of those are shooters. I even think that the Xbox was unfairly labeled as "shooters only" when it had great games like KOTOR, Splintercell, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden and many others. This time MS has just put forward a concerted effort to completely eliminate that label.

If that where true why is so hard to understand why. Every Shooter that is in production for X360 wants to be like Halo and what it did for Console shooters. No? What developer/publisher doesnt want to make $125M in its first 24hours. To say shooters or the Halo series sucks is purely opinion. To say every developer making an FPS wants to replicate buzz like Halo did is purely fact/logic.

Congradulations, you learned that at their most basic form, most games are shooters. You could argue Mario is a shooter because he can throw fireballs. You could argue Mario Kart is a shooter because you can launch shells at people. You could argue Pokemon is a shooter because some pokemon shoot some sort of substance at the others. Real classy what you did there.

You have guns in GTA, no? More action based? What does that even have to do with your argument? For Thief, you can shoot with your bow or crossbow. Heck what about Hitman, that has guns in it.

The fact is that the xbox360 is heavy on gun-toting muscle men action games and sports games. If you wanna be technicall and say that Crackdown is a free-form urban action video game, ok... The thing is that Shooter isn't a well defined therm, .

From the Wikipedia:

"Shooter games cover a fairly broad spectrum of genres that have the commonality of controlling a character who is usually armed with a firearm that can be freely aimed."

So yeah, they are shooters.

Do you understand how broad that definition is? By that you could probably label at least 50% of all games as shooters. That definition makes WoW and C&C 3 shooters.

I can defined it better. If it has a cross-hair and can move the gun with analog. It's a shooter.

Do you understand how broad that definition is? By that you could probably label at least 50% of all games as shooters. That definition makes WoW and C&C 3 shooters.

I can defined it better. If it has a cross-hair and can move the gun with analog. It's a shooter.

That still covers stealth games, many RPGs (including the 3D Elder Scrolls games), many action games and leaves out 2D sidescroller shooters like Contra. The point is, the term shooter is rediculously ambiguous. I mean I can play Crackdown, Oblivion, Dead Rising, Doom, Halo, etc. and never shoot a gun. As far as I would be concerned they would all be action/fighting games.

From the Wikipedia:

"Shooter games cover a fairly broad spectrum of genres that have the commonality of controlling a character who is usually armed with a firearm that can be freely aimed."

So yeah, they are shooters.

Stealth games are shooters. Contra is a shoot'em up. Big Difference!

The 360 definitely has more than just shooters, but the majority of the games that sell extremely well on the 360 are shooters. Just take a look at the sales for Perfect Dark Zero, Graw, F.E.A.R., Far Cry, Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas, Prey, Call of Duty 2 and 3, Lost Planet. Now look at all the hyped upcoming shooters for the 360: Halo 3, Bioshock (do not call it an RPG), Haze, Unreal Tournament 3, The Darkness, Shadowrun, and many others. Hopefully later this year, the 360 will be able to shake its shooter image with games such as Mass, Effect, Trusy Bell/Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Banjo Threeie (if it comes out this year), DMC 4, and GTAIV.

Nope, if anything, it needs more shooters.

How are stealth games shooters? I can play through Splintercell DA without ever shooting someone, same thing with Hitman. And with Contra again with the ambiguity, now there's a difference between shooters and shoot'em ups?

As a legitimate argument? No, it's passed, and has been dead for a while.
But the stigma will remain in the eyes of some. And the fact that the defining games for the system so far have been Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Gears of War, and the upcoming Halo 3 doesn't help much.

The variety is there, definately. Games like PGR3, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Dead Rising, Castlevania: SoTN, hell, even the abomination that is Fusion Frenzy 2 establishes a variety of games available which reaches far beyond the realm of "shooters". And I am convinced that over time as the library continues to grow, the perception will shrivel up and die.
