i think that we are not seeing a system that focuses on shooters, but more a trend in what gamers want. believe it or not people love shooters. your average SW poster may not, but the majority of people want to play shooters/gangland/sports games, with a small amount to jrpgs and such.

i think the whole "shooters onx xbox" thing is just a trend in the industry not so much limited to one system. 

I agree with all and none at the same time. 

Xbox was a strong shooter (especially popular games) system.  Yet there was so much more.  I am a big platform gamer, (Blinx, Voodoo Vince, Crash, Tak, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, I-Ninja, Sphyinx and the Cursed Mummy etc)  There was plenty for me to play.

I feel it is the same as labeling the PS2 as the RPG machine.  It may be strong in that genre but how many games in every possible genre were availble for PS2???

The only people who hang on to these stereotypes are fanboys who want to say System A only has 1 good game or only has a certain type of game available.

From the Wikipedia:

"Shooter games cover a fairly broad spectrum of genres that have the commonality of controlling a character who is usually armed with a firearm that can be freely aimed."

So yeah, they are shooters.

The Xbox and the 360 are heavily used online consoles, shooters just happen to work brilliantly online so therefore shooters sell extremely well.

But that doesnt mean it only has shooter, far from it infact.

Bioshock

When a game like Bioshock has bio-mods, phychic powers, more interesting interaction and situations from 90% of RPG's out there, a triller atmosphere, and slow paced battles that can last 15 minutes, or use the environment and other creatures in your favour, hell man, that goes WELL above the ...fps ... characterization

It is like Mass Effect, it is a RPG with one of the best dialog systems, exploration for hours, quests etc and a FPS part that only immerses you more in the game, is that a ...shooter ?

Shooters are games like Halo, Far Cry etc, Bioshock is not a shooter, since you can win the game by not shooting ALL the time

Maybe not a majority, but Xbox is still a little top-heavy with shooters.

But it does have plenty of games that aren't shooters at all.

Do you guys think that the variety of games on the 360 has gotten rid of the "360 only has shooters" argument or do you believe that the top rated games on the console in the future will be shooters?

I personally think 360 does have more of a variety of game genres than the original Xbox did but I don't think it's reached that stage where people don't think of shooters mainly when they think of a 360. I still think the Playstation brand name has a stronger variety of games but I can see MS working their way up.

I definitely think the "only shooters" argument has declined because of games like Lost Odyssey, Banjo Threeie, Forza 2 and Blue Dragon. Then again, when you look at the best upcoming 360 games, Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Bioshock seem to top most lists.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Does the 360 "only shooters" argument still apply or is it no more?

No way can you say Xbox 360 is a "shooter only" console. Not with games like Mass Effect, Dead Rising, Alan Wake, Forza 2, PGR 3, Kameo, DOA 4, VF 5, Ninja Gaiden 2, DMC 4, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Eternal Sonata, Crackdown, Halo Wars, CnC Tiberium Wars, BFME II, Star Trek Legacy, and Viva Pinata.

Yes there are just as many shooter titles, Halo and GeoW being the most noteable. But that doesn't diminish the FACT that there's more than enough selection in the other genres.

Xbox 360 library is well diversified.

Shooters are 100% shooters, no biomods and powers, no 15 minute battles, no use of surroundings, no little children running around in their full zombie forms, no eco system or anything

Bioshock is as much shooter as FF7-8-9-10-12, those have guns and you can plya the whole game with gun skills, so that makes them ... shooters, right ?

It's never been that the xbox has only had shooters... it's been that it's only been good for shooters (and sports games). And unfortunately that hasn't seemed to change much. Even last gen there were a handful of non-shooter games that were awesome on the xbox...

NG & KOTOR were the best games on the system. Unfortunately, this type of innovation was far & between for the console. And so far it's shaping up to be the same for the 360. It'll still have awesome games.... but the majority of the good ones are likely to still be shooters... even ME 'looks' like a shooter.

I don't consider Mass Effect a shooter. But yeah, the 360's best games are shooters. I don't mind it, because I like shooters. And, the 360 still has enough variety for me to keep me playing.BillGreen68

Exactly. I'm a FPS whore so I need my 360. It's definitely not shooters only and I actually find a lack of FPS on the 360 right now.

ummm, no. Bioshock is a fps. Just b/c a shooter uses new convetions doesn't make it a non-shooter. That's like saying that Crysis isn't a shooter. If it had weapons choices other than guns I would agree with you about the other elements included... but as it stands, it's just a unique shooter... which isn't a bad thing. But it just further emphasizes the fact that xbox consoles excel with shooter properties.
